  • Patent number: 6212763
Abstract: A sucker rod tool system for oil wells monitors both torque and angular displacement of a three-element sucker rod connection. The tool system engages two sucker rods that are at least partially screwed into opposite ends of a sucker rod coupling. The system, however, does not engage the coupling adjoining both rods. The system determines whether a connection has been properly tightened by sensing the torque and angular displacement of the connection as it is being tightened, and comparing the data to a stored reference set of data or curves. In some embodiments, a properly tightened connection is based upon the number of straight lines that are needed to adequately approximate a plotted curve of the sensed torque versus angular displacement. Tightness of each connection of a string of sucker rods is recorded with reference to each connection's depth within a well to later serve as an aide in diagnosing connection failures. In some cases, the energy required to unscrew a connection is also recorded.

  • Patent number: 6102301
Abstract: A scent-handling device for attracting wild game includes a plug that snugly fits into either end of a receptacle to selectively place the scent-handling device in a sealed mode for tightly containing a scent inside the receptacle and a wide-open aerating mode for releasing the scent. The device includes several well thought out features that allow it to be inexpensively manufactured by way of a straightforward plastic injection molding process. A resilient clip extending sideways from the receptacle allows the clip and the receptacle to be injection molded together as a unitary piece without having to resort to a complicated mold having expensive side-action pulls. The clip includes several teeth that allow both the receptacle and the plug to be firmly fixed to various size branches or other items, thereby avoiding the problem of startling skittish animals with something dangling from the branch, or dangling while in transport.

  • Patent number: 6032739
Abstract: A method for sensing the location of a casing collar within a wellbore and for orientating a tool circumferentially and radially employs the use of a compact dual-purpose magnet. The method includes offsetting the position of the magnet relative to the tool's centerline to carry out the magnet's purpose of orientating the tool. An inductive pickup coil is placed within the magnet's magnetic field to carry out the magnet's second purpose of sensing the location of a casing collar. The method is used in logging the location of casing collars, splitting casing collars, and perforating casings.

  • Patent number: 6026920
Abstract: A dynamic seat leveling device for a riding lawnmower or tractor has a virtual rotational point located below the leveling device itself. When operated on hilly terrain, such an arrangement accomplishes three objectives: 1) the operator remains level; 2) the operator's center of gravity remains centered directly above a critical balance point which is at ground level, midway between the right and left wheels; and 3) the operator remains at a constant elevation. Keeping the operator at a constant elevation, as the leveling device shifts from one side to the other, minimizes the power that would otherwise be needed to repeatedly raise and lower the operator as the tractor tilts from left to right. Minimizing the power required allows the use of a compact leveling drive that fits between the seat and frame of the tractor.

  • Patent number: 6019359
Abstract: A weld platen includes a top plate welded to a fabricated support frame. The support frame includes component parts that are interconnected into a lattice structure that provides the top plate with rigidity and flatness. The top plate includes top access holes for conventional clamps and a matrix of work piece alignment holes. The support frame in conjunction with the top plate provides several holes through which the clamps can extend and grip to clamp a work piece against the top plate.

  • Patent number: 6003597
Abstract: A directional collar locator sensor distinguishes between an outer casing collar from an inner pipe coupling deep within a wellbore by selectively positioning a semi-spherical magnetic shield about a magnetic sensor. The collar locator has virtually no moving parts and facilitates conventional logging, perforating multiple completion wellbores, and splitting of casing collars and inner pipe couplings. When used in perforating a well casing, the directional sensor ensures that the perforating gun is pointed in the right direction to produce complete perforations as opposed to just producing dents.

  • Patent number: 5979565
Abstract: A dual-emergency response system includes a common supply line that selectively conveys a fire extinguishing fluid to extinguish a fire and conveys life-sustaining air to displace air contaminated by biological or chemical toxins. A valve that distinguishes between the fire extinguishing fluid and the life-sustaining air opens to convey the air, but closes to prevent the fire extinguishing fluid from escaping. The valve is installed alongside an overhead spray nozzle of a fire sprinkler system.

  • Patent number: 5937766
Abstract: A tool holder includes three degrees of adjustment to fit over the engine compartment of most any vehicle. The tool holder includes a tray rotatably attached to a telescoping arm which in turn is supported by two rotatable leg supports. The assembly is adapted to rest upon a vehicle's front fenders and straddle the engine compartment. In one embodiment of the invention, a tool holding magnet is used instead of the tray.

  • Patent number: 5926997
Abstract: A cockroach trap includes floor molding that is hollowed out in back to provide a passage running the length of the molding. Slits along the bottom of the molding allow a cockroach to enter the passage where it steps onto a touch-sensitive switch. The switch causes a control to momentarily energize a vacuum that sucks the cockroach from the passage and deposit it into a chamber where it can be destroyed or stored alive.

  • Patent number: 5857288
Abstract: Plastic extruded lawn edging includes a vertical panel and a horizontal panel that are reconfigurable to a storage position and an installed position. In the storage position, the lawn edging has a relatively low minimum moment of inertia for the flexibility of coiling about itself. In the installed position, the lawn edging has a higher minimum moment of inertia for greater rigidity when in use. The horizontal panel is wide enough to support the wheel of a lawnmower and provides a band along which no grass can grow. The horizontal panel eliminates the need for grass trimming wherever it is used, such as along side the outer wall of a house or around a garden.

  • Patent number: 5831242
Abstract: A wiper heater insert includes a coiled heater wire, slip fit insulator, and an air gap between the heater insert and a longitudinal bore of the wiper. These three features minimize warping caused by thermal expansion and maximize the flexibility of the wiper. A press fit bushing at one end provides a readily removable heater element to minimize the cost of replacing a wiper blade and save wear and tear on the heater insert when it is not needed during the summer.

  • Patent number: 5799871
Abstract: A valved nozzle for spraying fuel oil and method therefor includes an inlet, a discharge chamber downstream of the inlet, and a flow restricting orifice downstream of the discharge chamber. The pressure in both the inlet and the discharge chamber urges the valved spray nozzle to open. The valved spray nozzle abruptly opens by the inlet pressure rising above a predetermined upper pressure limit and abruptly closes upon falling to a lower limit. The span between the upper and lower limits defines a very definite deadband across which leakage is avoided at intermediate pressures.

  • Patent number: 5771624
Abstract: A fish bite alert device includes a 3-position adjustable gripper that provides a positive line gripping action in a set mode yet completely releases the line, entirely free of the fish bite alert device, in a release position. The gripper is illuminated for night fishing. The fish bite alert device also includes a 3-mode selector switch to choose light-only operation, light and buzzer operation, and an off position. The light assists the hearing impaired, while the buzzer is beneficial to the sight impaired.

  • Patent number: 5750934
Abstract: A mouse cable holder (mouse hook) includes a base heavy enough to support a mast that suspends a computer mouse cable over a separate mouse pad. The mast is made of a single steel wire with an integral cable feed loop at its lower end and an integral mouse cable gripper at its upper end. The base can be slid over a table top to move the mouse cable holder to a desired position relative to the mouse pad. The base also serves as a spool to take up any excess cable between a computer and the mouse cable holder.
