  • Patent number: 8211985
Abstract: The present invention relates to polymer blends comprising: (a) from 5 wt % to 95 wt % of a HDPE having a density from 0.941 g/cm3 to 0.980 g/cm3 and an I22 of 10 dg/min or more; and (b) from 95 wt % to 5 wt % of a grafted mPE, which is a reaction product of (i) a mPE having a density from 0.860 g/cm3 to 0.935 g/cm3 and an I2 from 0.7 dg/min to 5.0 dg/min, and (ii) a silicon-containing grafting component, wherein the blend exhibits a high-temperature creep after extrusion that is at least 20% lower than a blend of the HDPE and the mPE that has not been grafted with a silicon-containing grafting component. These blends can advantageously comprise at least one layer of a film, e.g., made via extrusion.

  • Patent number: 8142893
Abstract: Multi-layer polymeric films having at least one skin layer comprising at least one polyhydroxyether component or a combination of at least one polyhydroxyether component and at least polyester component are provided. The multi-layer films exhibit advantages such as high surface energy contributing to improved printability, barrier properties, and metallization. Additionally, the films exhibit improved adhesion between the skin layer and other layers of multi-layer film structures. In certain embodiments, the at least one skin layer incorporates from about 70 wt. % to about 100 wt. % of the at least one polyhydroxyether component or the combination of the at least one polyhydroxyether component and the at least one polyester component. The combination of the at least one polyhydroxyether component and the at least one polyester component incorporates from about 1 wt. % to about 99.0 wt. % of the at least one polyhydroxyether component and from about 1 wt. % to about 99 wt.

  • Patent number: 8048532
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an improved, metallized polymer film and method for preparing the same. Such films comprise a) at least one treated polymeric skin layer comprising butylene, and b) a metal layer deposited onto at least one surface of this polymeric skin layer. The polymeric skin layer can comprise a propylene-butylene copolymer or an ethylene-propylene-butylene terpolymer, with this copolymer or terpolymer containing from about 4 wt % to about 12 wt % of butylene. The polymeric skin layer is preferably preconditioned by subjecting an outermost surface thereof to plasma treatment which facilitates the deposition thereon of a strongly adhering metal layer which is preferably aluminum. The resulting multi-layer films exhibit metal adhesion bond strength of at least about 100 grams/25 mm. These films will preferably also exhibit a Water Vapor Transmission Rate of from about 0.05 to about 0.2 g/m2/24 hour, and an Oxygen Transmission Rate of from about 5.0 to about 20 cm3/m2/24 hour.

  • Patent number: 8043674
Abstract: Heat-sealable, multi-layer composite packaging structures that are suitable for packaging and having improved sealing properties and simplified construction as compared to prior art composite film constructions are disclosed. The inventive film structure includes a first substrate, such as paper, bonded such as by extrusion lamination, to a sealable, high-barrier film. This inventive “paper-adhesive-polymer” lamination may replace prior art “paper-adhesive-foil-adhesive” foil-based tandem laminations. An improved or comparable polymer film substrate may replace the “foil-adhesive” layer components of the popular incumbent prior art structure.
