    Abstract: An apparatus for automatically adjusting the distance between two support members for carrying workpieces of different dimensions. The support members are mounted on guides that are fitted to pallets that travel on conveyor transport systems for automatic production/assembly lines. In one embodiment the support members have locking devices that frictionally secure the support members in place on the pallet and can be unlocked for movement along the guide. A positioning unit engages the pallet so that the locking devices is unlocked and the support members are engaged and translated to the desired locations under the control of a drive. In a second embodiment the support members are translated along and under the control of a threaded bar. A positioning unit engages the pallet to activate the threaded bar by rotating it to translate the support members to the desired locations. The support members are independently translated using one threaded bar and the drive for each support member.

The container contains at least two components that are movable between a first position and a second position with respect to each other. In the first position the additive material is hermetically sealed inside the container during storage of the smoking article prior to use. The container is activated by moving the components of the container to the second position to provide air flow pathways through the container so that the additive material can modify the smoking article accordingly. The components may have perforations that are covered by cooperating overlapping portions of the components of the container in the first position and uncovered in the second position. Alternately, the container may include a sealed capsule containing the additive that is punctured by moving the components during activation.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for producing a tasteless carbon heat source from a preformed article of a ligno-cellulosic material according to which the article is pyrolyzed in a continuously exchanged inert atmosphere at a temperature within the range of from about 800.degree. to about 1100.degree. C., for from about 0.5 to about 3 hours, then cooled in the inert atmosphere at a rate of from about 500.degree. to about 10.degree. C. per hour to a temperature within the range of from about 275.degree. C. to about 25.degree. C., and then subjected to at least one additional process step selected from an oxygen absorption step, a salt impregnation followed by heat treatment step, and a water desorption step. The present invention also relates to a smoking article including the carbon heat source, and a flavor generator comprising a substrate material containing at least one thermally releasable flavorant.

    Abstract: An improved stuffer box used for crimping textile fibers, particularly fibrillated polyolefin films. The width of the stuffer box is related to the linear density of the fiber bundles to be crimped whereby there is one millimeter of width for each fiber bunder size in the range of from about 200 to about 750 denier. Pressure controlled hinged lid or fixed lid exit orifices may be employed. Also employed may be a distributing device for applying additive material to the textile fibers prior to crimping to enhance the crimping operation or to enhance the end use of the crimped fiber or both. Fibrillated polyolefin materials that are crimped in accordance with the invention are adapted for use as filter materials in smoking articles.

Induction heating is used to seal the web. The sealing heads include a sealing jaw and an anvil jaw hinged together and adapted to clamp the tube therebetween at predetermined locations as the sealing heads and product filled tubing advance, the locations being adjustable and the sealing and anvil jaws being adjustable to control the volume of product clamped and sealed in each package.

    Abstract: Apparatus and a method for processing hot, moist extruded tobacco-containing materials as they are continuously extruded by drying the extruded material rapidly with microwave energy, and then cooling the extruded material rapidly so that the surface temperature of the extruded material is decreased below the bulk temperature to provide the extruded material with an adequately rigid and stable dimensionally structure that can be formed into a smoking article. Microwave drying provides substantially uniform drying without case hardening the material. Cooling may occur by passing air at high velocity, refrigerated air or presenting a partial vacuum across the advancing extruded material, or contacting the material with cold contacting members or a cryogenic bath. Conventional maker devices can be used for forming smoking articles from the dried and cooled extruded material.
