Patent number: 4242948Abstract: The disclosure illustrates an insulated composite piston comprising a crown of ceramic or other heat resistant material secured to an aluminum piston body by a bolt of temperature resistant alloy. A low conductivity interface between the crown and the body is provided by a series of stacked discs having low effective thermal conductivity. The relative thermal expansion of the parts is compensated for by bellville washers on the bolt. The above arrangement insulates the crown from the piston body thereby minimizing the temperature gradient across the crown so that its temperature can be maintained as high as necessary to increase efficiency and minimize noxious emissions.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1977Date of Patent: January 6, 1981Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventors: John H. Patent number: 4170528Abstract: The disclosure illustrates a method and apparatus for precision balancing a rotatable element such as the turbine shaft assembly of a turbocharger. The turbine-shaft assembly is placed in a machine that detects the position and degree of unbalance. The material contributing to the unbalance is then removed from the wheel using electrochemical machining in which material is removed from the turbine through anodic dissolution of the turbine wheel material by passage of a current through a conductive work piece and electrolyte to the wheel. A means is provided to indicate the time integrated current flow of the electrochemical machining process. The time integrated current flow is related to unbalance units so that the electrochemical machining is terminated when the desired amount of mass is removed to achieve balance by reaching the determined time integrated current flow.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1978Date of Patent: October 9, 1979Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventor: Will W. Patent number: 4169354Abstract: The disclosure illustrates an exhaust gas turbine and compressor system for use with a pneumatic conveyor where the exhaust gas is supplied by an internal combustion engine. The engine utilizes a variable geometry turbine device for changing the torque characteristics of the turbine so as to vary the mass flow of air from the compressor driven by the turbine. As a result, the compressor output will be sufficient to supply air to the engine or to the pneumatic conveyor system while the engine is naturally aspirated. A diverter valve is provided for selectively directing air from the outlet of the compressor either to the air intake of the engine or the pneumatic conveyor.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1976Date of Patent: October 2, 1979Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventor: William E. Patent number: 4150651Abstract: The disclosure illustrates a fuel control valve for a fuel system of a compression ignition engine which utilizes unit fuel injectors operating on the principle that the fuel pressure applied to the injectors determines the quantity of fuel injected into the engine cylinders. The fuel control valve is connected in the supply line for half of the injectors of the engine. The valve has a plunger which blocks off flow to these injectors whenever the fuel system pressure is below a predetermined level. When the pressure exceeds that level, the plunger displaces to a position where it permits flow to the injectors and offers a minimum restriction to flow. The pressure level is set at a level which reflects engine operation above idle but below normal engine operating conditions. The net effect is to substantially reduce the generation of white smoke during engine startup and while idling for extended periods of time while not affecting normal engine operating conditions.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1977Date of Patent: April 24, 1979Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventors: James A. Wade, Edward D. Smith

Patent number: 4095572Abstract: A turbocharged diesel engine fuel system has its output fuel pressure varied upon acceleration as a direct function of the engine's manifold air pressure. The improvement of an orifice and chamber of predetermined size produces a delay in the transmission of the manifold air pressure signal to the fuel system. This, in turn, causes a delay in the increase of fuel rate to the engine thereby minimizing acceleration smoke without hurting engine power during steady state operation.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1976Date of Patent: June 20, 1978Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventor: Robert L. Scholtz

Patent number: 4095803Abstract: The disclosure illustrates an oil seal assembly for a keyway which receives a pin for an interconnection between an accessory drive pulley and a shaft extending from a diesel engine accessory drive gear box. The oil seal consists of an L-shaped elastomeric seal with one leg of the L extending into the keyway and the other leg providing a shoulder which abuts the shaft adjacent the keyway end. A nut threaded onto the end of the shaft holds a washer against the L-shaped seal thus compressing it. So compressed, the seal expands against the walls of the keyway to form an effective seal against the flow of oil therethrough. Preferably, the seal is formed from material which swells exceedingly when immersed in petroleum products. As a result, any leakage causes the seal to expand and stop further oil flow.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1977Date of Patent: June 20, 1978Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventors: Charles David Meier, Shelby Lewis Olvey

Patent number: 4062432Abstract: A valve for controlling flow of viscous fluid from a reservoir through a valve seat in a wall to a working chamber of a fluid coupling. Presence of fluid in the working chamber permits the drive to transmit torque in response to a single input variable, such as temperature. The valve comprises a valve arm pivotally mounted to the reservoir side of the wall and a closure member positioned on the working chamber side of the wall. The valve is biased to a position preventing flow except when a bimetallic temperature responsive element displaces the valve to an open position. The valve arm is shaped so that centrifugal force acting on it counteracts the centrifugal pressure force on the fluid in a direction opening the valve. The valve therefore is rendered insensitive to all variables except temperature.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1976Date of Patent: December 13, 1977Assignee: Holset Engineering Company LimitedInventor: Raymond Dennis Evans

Patent number: 4062336Abstract: The disclosure illustrates an anti-tampering fuel control valve for a fuel system providing fuel at a regulated pressure to a series of unit injectors on a diesel engine. The injectors are cam actuated to inject fuel quantities related to the pressure of the fuel supplied to them. The control valve bypasses fuel from the output of the fuel system to a low pressure region when the pressure exceeds a first given level because of fuel system tampering. Orifices in the bypass flow path cause the fuel pressure to follow a schedule generally similar to the normal system pressure schedule but at lower levels. Bypass flow is continued until the fuel system pressure drops to a lower pressure than the pressure at which bypass flow begins.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1975Date of Patent: December 13, 1977Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventors: Gary L. Gant, Michael D. Breeden, James A. Sting, Edward D. Smith
