  • Patent number: 5147423
Abstract: Electrode apparatus for increasing the charge state of aerosol particulates entrained in a flowing gas, such as smoke particles in effluent emitted from a power plant, so as to improve the collection efficiency of conventional electrostatic precipitation apparatus. A corona-generating high voltage electrode is located immediately downstream in the gas flow from a region of mechanically constricted high velocity gas flow, and generates molecular gas ions, some of which attach to and charge aerosol particulates near the corona-generating electrode, and the remainder of which are swept up by the gas as they attempt to move upstream from the electrode into a region of rapidly decreasing field strength and increasing gas flow velocity. Moving downstream from the corona-generating electrode, the molecular ions contribute to further charging of the aerosol particulates through space charge effects, including field effect and diffusion charging.

  • Patent number: 5101945
Abstract: A clutch/brake system for a manual transmission motor vehicle, having an additional brake master cylinder attached to the conventional clutch master cylinder, and associated hydraulic lines and valves whereby depression of the clutch pedal first causes disengagement of the clutch, and then causes engagement of the brakes through engagement of the additional brake master cylinder. The system is particularly useful when starting a vehicle on an upward incline, to allow the operator to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when one foot must be on the clutch pedal while the other is on the accelerator pedal. The system is also useful in the event that a sudden stop is necessary while the operator is using the clutch pedal for frequent gear shifting, as in heavy traffic.

  • Patent number: 4981104
Abstract: A disposable kitty litter tent with a moisture-resistant cardboard base and a paper tent which may be folded flat against the base for shipment and sale, which also performs deodorizing and flea repellant functions, by use of a thin layer of cedar sawdust secured to the inner walls of the tent by the mild adhesive. The cedar sawdust deodorizes the kitty litter tent against odors generated by cat wastes. The cedar sawdust also gradually rubs off against the cat's fur as the cat moves within the tent, particularly when the cat turns around to exit the single opening in one end of the tent, so that the cat receives a flea repellant benefit even when away from the tent, from the thin layer of cedar sawdust which accumulates upon its fur.

  • Patent number: 4532996
Abstract: An automatic fire extinguisher and alarm apparatus, particularly suitable for use with waste receptacles, which discharges fire extinguisher fluid when exposed to a fire and sounds an audible alarm. Fire extinguisher fluid is quickly discharged from a reservoir onto the fire when heat from the fire melts a fusible alloy plug. A second reservoir contains a partially gaseous alarm agent, and is connected through a valve to a vibrating diaphragm gas horn. The valve stem is connected to a diaphragm separating the two reservoirs. When pressure is lost in the first reservoir upon discharge of the fire extinguisher fluid, the pressure of the alarm agent in the second reservoir moves the diaphragm and valve stem and opens the valve, allowing alarm agent to be discharged through the gas horn, raising an audible alarm.

  • Patent number: 4520503
Abstract: A tone discrimination circuit for use with audible smoke or fire detectors or similar audible devices, which automatically emits an output electronic alarm signal, for notification of persons at remote locations, upon input of a proper audio tone from the smoke detector or other audible device. The circuit contains in series a microphone, a two stage audio amplifier, a frequency detector, and a time discrimination circuit. The circuit emits an output electronic alarm signal if and only if the audio input signal has sufficient amplitude, the desired frequency, and the desired duration. In the preferred embodiment the duration must be 20 seconds or longer, though the circuit allows the audio input to cease for a period less than 0.25 seconds, without loss of the output signal. The timing periods are adjustable.

  • Patent number: 4512594
Abstract: Safety ski binding for use in both downhill and cross-country skiing. A conventional 3-pin 75 mm. toe binding is mounted on a front base plate which is rotatable during downhill skiing, but is locked against rotation for cross-country skiing. The rear binding assembly employs a reversed Cubco toe binding used as a heel binding, which is locked to a heel latch assembly during downhill skiing, the heel latch being unlocked during cross-country skiing. In downhill skiing a safety release occurs by overcoming the spring compression of the Cubco binding, and such release is facilitated by the rotation of the ski boot about the axis of the front base plate. During cross-country skiing the heel latch is unlocked, and the heel of the ski boot is free to move vertically above the ski.

  • Patent number: 4251005
Abstract: A tank for transporting liquids, having a baffle system for control of liquid surges produced by acceleration of the tank in transit. Large cylindrical hollow baffles, parallel to the longitudinal tank axis, are mounted between transverse support partitions, the entire assembly being rigidly attached to the walls of the tank vessel. Small relief holes in the cylindrical baffles allow the liquid level in the baffles to change as the tank is filled or drained. Transverse liquid surges are controlled by the cylindrical baffles, which prevent surging of the liquid contained within the baffles, while deflecting and dissipating wave motion and surges of liquid outside the baffles. Longitudinal surges are controlled by the transverse support partitions.
