    Abstract: Transmission techniques are provided that improve service continuity and reduce interruptions in delivery of content that can be caused by transitions that occur when the User Equipment (UE) moves from one cell to the other, or when the delivery of content changes from a Point-to-Point (PTP) connection to a Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) connection in the same serving cell, and vice-versa. Such transmission techniques enable seamless delivery of content across cell borders and/or between different transmission schemes such as Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) and Point-to-Point (PIP). Mechanisms for adjusting different streams and for recovering content from each data block during such transitions are also provided so that data is not lost during a transition. In addition, mechanisms for realigning data during decoding at a receiving terminal are also provided.

In one embodiment, a method is implemented in a WCDMA communications system. This method includes combining data rate information for a first data channel and data rate information for a second data channel in a mobile station, encoding the combined data rate information and transmitting the encoded combined data rate information from the mobile station to a base station via a single control channel. This method further includes receiving the encoded combined data rate information in the base station, decoding the encoded combined data rate information to produce the combined data rate information, and extracting the data rate information for the first and second data channels and decoding the first and second data channels using this information.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a communication system which manages guarantee of service (GOS) requirements for various users while efficiently managing backhaul network traffic and optimizing overall system capacity. In one aspect, armed handoff is used to transmit forward link data from a single base station to a particular mobile station as long as certain minimum requirements are met, such as minimum data throughput, minimum data rate, and GOS requirements. If these criteria are not met, soft and softer handoff can be employed to transmit forward link data from one or more base stations to a particular mobile station until the conditions for armed handoff are met. In another aspect, the test to add a base station sector to the active set differs based on whether other sectors of that base station already exist in the active set. The test is less stringent when a sector is not the first of its base station to enter the active set, and more stringent when it is the first.

In one embodiment, the method is used to enable additional TFCI data corresponding to two different data channels to be transmitted on a single control channel.
