  • Patent number: 6268811
Abstract: The disclosed data compressor receives an input stream of data characters and provides a corresponding stream of output codes. The compressor generates a sequence of numerically increasing output codes corresponding to numerically increasing contiguous segments of a detected run of the same data character. Non-run characters of the input stream are transmitted directly in synchronism with incrementing the codes of the code sequence. In one embodiment, the number of characters in the run segments are stored together with the respective codes representing the segments. In later encounters of a previously processed run, the stored data is accessed and the stored codes corresponding to the run segments are output as appropriate.

  • Patent number: 6269422
Abstract: In order to overcome the situation in magnetic tape drives, where an unload command would wipe-out the tape statistics so that no data would then be available which would indicate errors and other tape defects, there has been developed a system and method which permits the retrieval and storage of tape statistics in a Sumlog file. Specialized algorithmic sequences are used to initiate a Rewind/Unload tape request that invokes a COLLECT_TAPE_STATS procedure, (or else to an error handling procedure as a result of a counter overflow condition) which calls a COLLECT_LOG_SENSE_DATA procedure which then collects tape statistics for deposit into a recording medium.

  • Patent number: 6260841
Abstract: A document feeder includes a nudger located at a first side of a document stack. The nudger applies a nudger force to the first side of the document stack. An adjustable hopper positions the document stack next to the nudger. The adjustable hopper has a hopper floor that is an inclined plane supporting a flag. The flag adjustably rests against a side of the document stack opposite the nudger and applies a variable flag force to the document stack. The flag force changes according to the incline angle of the hopper floor. The flag has a weight, and as the incline of the hopper floor increases, the flag applies an increasing force caused by the weight to the document stack. The flag force is transmitted through the document stack. The document stack applies a force to the nudger and the nudger applies a reactionary force normal to the nudger. A feedback control is coupled between the nudger and adjustable hopper so that the nudger force can be changed by adjusting the incline of the hopper floor.

  • Patent number: 6237143
Abstract: A method is provided in a computer system, which employs a multiplicity of diverse software tools, for monitoring and capturing a pattern of all file usage of each of the software tools. The usage pattern for each of the software tools is migrated into the computer system. The method includes invoking a first process for interfacing with a first one of the software tools and the computer system. Next, the first one of the software tools is invoked through the first process inside the computer system. The first process and the first one of the software tools are then registered with a control module in the computer system. A second process is informed through the control module that the first one of the software tools is being operated upon and to start recording information about the tool. After this, the second process captures information about all files opened and closed by the first one of the software tools during its operation.

  • Patent number: 6233665
Abstract: A memory system includes a data memory for storing data and applications software and a distinct cache status memory for storing status information regarding the data memory. A memory controller generates timing and control signals for accessing the data memory in a page mode while concurrently accessing the cache status memory in a word mode. In the preferred embodiment, the data memory is accessed in a four word per page mode so that the memory capacity of the associated cache status memory can be up to seventy five percent smaller than the data memory. In order to conserve pins on the memory controller, the cache status memory shares a substantial portion of the address lines which are received by the data memory. Supplemental cache status address lines are generated by programmable control logic, which may be incorporated into the memory controller.

  • Patent number: 6233619
Abstract: Methods and apparatus that enable network applications executing on respective directly interconnected computer systems to communicate at high speed, with low latency, over the interconnection therebetween such that both systems may use their native mechanisms to communicate with each other without change in those mechanisms, rather than over conventional network communication paths such as Ethernet. Communication between applications in co-resident, closely coupled processing environments is provided by replacing the conventional TCP transport layer and the conventional IP network layer with a reliable messaging subsystem (“MSS”) for data transfers between the closely coupled systems which provides an interface which is independent of the communication protocol of the interconnect and a virtual transport layer (“VTL”) which simulates a known transport layer protocol, such as TCP/IP, to the network applications.

  • Patent number: 6223180
Abstract: A system and method in a computer system having coupled thereto a repository for storing data, which method is implemented by the computer system. The method encodes display, entry fields and static text of a screen application (screen data) into Host Reply Definition (HRD), Request (REQ) and recognition files, which are then stored in the repository. A graphical user interface program is used for building and transforming the HRD, REQ and files stored in the repository into components. Next, the HRD, REQ and recognition files are extracted from the repository and associated with the screen application. The attributes of these files are written into a type library, thereby forming the software components. After this, the recognition file is stored in a directory structure independent of the repository. Finally, the components are registered in a registry for recognition by other applications and components.

  • Patent number: 6219799
Abstract: A system and method for providing redundant access to a network-based storage medium. The storage medium is divided into at least two partitions and two computers are configured as network servers, one each of the computers acting as a server for one each of the partitions. Each of the computers is assigned a unique name to identify it to the network. A first one of the computers supports multiple network names. When the other computer fails or goes off-line the first computer is configured to respond to both the first name and the second name, and to act as a network server for both partitions. The network can thus access the partition served by the second computer even though the second computer is off-line. When the second computer returns on-line, the first computer is re-configured to its initial configuration.

  • Patent number: 6194945
Abstract: A receiver circuit has a high threshold of 3.3÷2 volts and maximum noise margin. This is achieved by making two transistors in the receiver have channel resistances, under the condition whereas input line carries 3.3÷2 volts and a control line carries 0 volts, that generate an output signal as a first resistance ratio which when multiplied by a supply voltage equals 3.3÷2 volts. Further, the receiver also has a low threshold of 2.5÷2 volts and maximum noise margin. This is achieved by making the above two transistors, plus two other transistors in the receiver, have respective channel resistances under the condition where the input line carries 2.5÷2 volts and the control signal line carries 3.3 volts, that generate the output signal as a second resistance ratio which when multiplied by the supply voltage again equals 3.3÷2 volts.
