  • Patent number: 5763044
Abstract: The present invention relates to fluid pervious, dispersible, and flushable webs particularly suited for use in a disposable absorbent article, such as a diaper, sanitary napkin, panty liner, incontinence pad, or the like. The present invention further relates to such webs which also include an improved, functional textured surface so as to be suitable for use as a topsheet on such a disposable absorbent article. The present invention provides a fluid pervious web which disperses into fragments which are readily flushable in a normal toilet. The web preferably comprises a wetlaid apertured tissue having a temporary wet strength resin incorporated therein. The web preferably further includes a plurality of individual fibrils on a body-facing surface thereof, so as to provide a clean and dry tactile impression in use. The fibrils serve to separate the wearer's skin from the underlying tissue substrate in use.

  • Patent number: 5693037
Abstract: The present invention provides an absorbent article having a topsheet treated with a silicone-based surfactant to impart hydrophilicity. The absorbent article preferably includes a first, apertured, macroscopically expanded, three-dimensional, polymeric topsheet and preferably includes a second, apertured, macroscopically expanded, three-dimensional polymeric topsheet underlying the first topsheet. The multiple topsheets provide improved masking of bodily fluids absorbed and retained by the absorbent core. The first and second topsheets preferably include surfactants which impart hydrophilicity to differing degrees, and which preferably are selected from diverse surfactant categories. The use of a silicone-based surfactant imparts improved tactile qualities to the wearer-contacting surface of the first topsheet in comparison with non-silicone-based surfactants.

  • Patent number: 5665452
Abstract: The present invention provides a three-dimensional, macroscopically expanded, apertured, laminate web suitable for use as a topsheet on an absorbent article and a method for making the same. The web includes a first layer of substantially transparent, polymeric material having an inner surface and an outer surface. A nonwoven web is secured to the inner surface of the substantially transparent polymeric material and is visible through the substantially transparent polymeric material. The presence of the nonwoven web creates the appearance of a fibrous web which is perceived as soft and skin friendly while still maintaining the fluid transport benefits of prior art plastic webs.

  • Patent number: 5634666
Abstract: A binder with cover spacer which restrains the covers of a binder in a near-parallel relationship to enable the binder to be stored in a stacked or shelved manner. The binder of the invention is comprised of a back portion, or spine, which determines the width of the closed binder, and generally two covers hingedly attached to the spine. The cover spacer of the invention comprises a first base portion affixed to one of the covers of the binder near the distal, or outer, edge of the cover. A stand-off element is hingedly attached to the first base portion, such that the stand-off element is moveable from a position approximately parallel to the cover, essentially laying flat against the cover, to a position approximately perpendicular to the cover. A second base portion is affixed to the other cover in a position generally opposite to the first base portion.

  • Patent number: 5597335
Abstract: The present invention provides for an air, sea, or land deployed rapid response, self-propelled, autonomous or semi-autonomous marine vehicle (AMV) possessing a pair of extendible hydraulic cylinders encased in a pneumatic inflation chute, with an ability to be directed toward, and to autonomously seek out and recover physically restricted persons in peril from an aqueous environment. The AMV uses video, thermal, and audio sensors to actively and autonomously detect persons floating in an aqueous environment, and can be directed to a person or persons in distress on the sea surface through an aircraft, ship, or shore mounted, GPS linked, laser targeting system. The present invention also possesses the ability to provide life support functions, propulsive mobility, and two way real-time radio frequency and satellite based voice, video and data telemetry with the rescue aircraft, ship, or shore based coordination center responsible for deploying, operating, or monitoring the AMV.

  • Patent number: 5316190
Abstract: An aesthetically pleasing folding utility rack suitable for carrying elongated or oversized objects in the extended position comprises a horizontal rail or plate, a forward transverse rack member fixed to the horizontal rail, a moveable rear transverse rack member and a pivotal connection means which connects the rear transverse rack member to the horizontal rail and allows the rear transverse rack member to be moved quickly and easily from an open extended position to a closed position. In the closed position the rack has the general appearance of a roll bar.
