  • Patent number: 7996645
Abstract: Data is written to a hard disk drive using shingled writing principles, i.e., each data track is partially overwritten when an immediately contiguous data track is written. One or more contiguous data tracks establish a band, and a band establishes a respective segment in a log-structured file system.

  • Patent number: 7768781
Abstract: A personal computer has a central air plenum straddled by opposed drive bays, and memory modules in the plenum are covered by a shroud that increases the air flow over the memory modules. The plenum establishes a first pathway for air flow and parallel to the plenum is a second pathway for air flow past cards such as graphics and network cards.

  • Patent number: 7624279
Abstract: If a user forgets the power-on password of his computer, he can depress the “enter” key or “access” key once to cause the BIOS to locate the power-on password in memory and attempt to unlock the HDD using the power-on password to boot a secure O.S. The HDD password either can be the same as the power-on password or the HDD can recognize the power-on password for the limited purpose of allowing access to the secure O.S. In any case, the secure O.S. is booted for password reset.

  • Patent number: 7600127
Abstract: A method for updating an ISO file, e.g., to add a digital signature to the ISO file, includes adding a supplemental file composed of, e.g., all zeroes to the ISO file before recording, and then recording the ISO file with supplemental file to an optical disk using ISO format. A digital signature is computed after recording. The zeroes in the supplemental file are replaced by the values of the digital signature and the file is re-saved. Also, an ISO file that might have a common part and several unique parts, e.g., for respective languages, is deconstructed such that only a single copy of the common part is recorded to disk, avoiding multiple recordations of the same data.

  • Patent number: 7590834
Abstract: A computer determines whether it has been booted from a hard disk drive or from an alternate source (e.g., a floppy drive or portable memory) that entails a higher risk of importing a virus into the computer, and if it is determined that a non-HDD source was booted from, corrective action such as a virus scan can be preemptively taken.

  • Patent number: 7464406
Abstract: A secure computer system includes a central processing unit in which plural programs reside. The system includes means for verifying whether the at least one program is trusted or not trusted. That means can be an external key device that includes a verification program that can communicate with the programs residing within the central processing unit.

  • Patent number: 7359334
Abstract: A computer device, according to the present invention, includes: a power source judging means for judging whether power is supplied from an AC power source to the computer device capable of connecting with a wireless communications module which transmits and receives data to/from an access point; and a control means for controlling the timing of measuring the strength of connection with the above described access point based on judgment by the above described power source judging means. Therefore, by setting the timing of measuring the strength of connection with the access point based on whether or not the computer device is used at an almost fixed location, which in turn is judged by distinguishing the type of power source, it is possible to change the amounts of data transmitted and received by the wireless communications module.

  • Patent number: 7305559
Abstract: A software method of authentication is described that uses both relative and absolute values of inter-keystroke intervals measured during entry of a unique identifier. Both the relative and absolute values have to be achieved during entry of the unique identifier. The relative values are the ratio of each of the inter-keystroke intervals divided by one of the inter-keystroke intervals or divided by the average inter-keystroke interval.

  • Patent number: 7257108
Abstract: A network includes a plurality of wall plates, each of the wall plates couples a network resource such as a computer or a network attached device to the network and includes an RFID circuit to detect proximate devices having an RFID tag. The proximate devices can be network attached devices or non network attached devices such as desks, phones, and artwork. Logic is included within each wall plate which includes wall plate physical location information. The logic is designed to respond to a broadcast signal. In so doing, the physical location of any resource can be determined. The physical location of all known resources are provided to an inventory application in the network, thereby allowing network administrators and users to remotely determine the physical location (room, floor, building, etc.) of any and all known resources attached to the network. Likewise, local computer users are able to identify the network resources located in their vicinity.

  • Patent number: 6557507
Abstract: A rocker arm assembly has a rocker arm that forms an adjusting mechanism bore, an insert bore, and a transverse central bore. An adjusting mechanism, e.g., a screw, is installed in the adjusting mechanism bore and is used to adjust the travel of the rocker arm as it pivots about the central bore during normal operation. An insert having a hemispherical end is installed in the insert bore. Additionally, a button that forms a hemispherical chamber that is sized and shaped to be received to the hemispherical end of the insert is press fitted onto the insert. As the rocker arm assembly pivots about the central bore the button rotates with respect to the insert. The cooperation of structure between the insert and the button allows the button to rotate with respect to the insert, but prevents the button from falling off the insert and damaging the engine in which the rocker arm assembly is installed.

  • Patent number: 6364565
Abstract: A method for reducing the incidence of piston pin failure by providing a retainer assembly for piston pin plugs such that the plugs cannot be removed or shaken lose during operation. A plastic rod is inserted into the piston pin, and the rod is ultrasonically welded to the stems of mushroom-shaped plastic piston plugs such that the plugs cover the open ends of the pin and are held in place by the cooperation of structure between the plugs and the rod. In an alternate embodiment, the stem of each pin plug is hollow and a respective internally threaded brass insert is disposed in the stem and ultrasonically welded therein. An externally threaded rod is then engaged with the two internally threaded inserts to hold the plugs on the piston pin.

  • Patent number: 6314921
Abstract: An engine cooling system includes a two-pass radiator, a jacket water pump pumping coolant from the radiator to the engine, and an aftercooler for cooling engine charge air from a turbocharger. An aftercooler pump pumps coolant from the radiator to the aftercooler. An orifice can be disposed in the aftercooler discharge line to limit flow therethrough, and an orifice bypass line with thermostatic control valve can be provided to selectively bypass the orifice. A shunt tank is connected to the suction of the jacket water pump to establish a static pressure head thereon, to ensure that the jacket water pump has sufficient suction pressure despite relatively high coolant head loss through the two-pass radiator.
