  • Patent number: 6976801
Abstract: The present invention describes a double belt transport system for moving a mailpiece into a printing area of a digital printer. The transport system includes an upper belt and a lower belt. The upper belt has a straight section to form a nip with the lower belt to ingest the mailpiece. The straight section also defines a registration plane to register the upper surface of the mailpiece with respect to the print head of the printer. In order to make sure the registration is consistent regardless of the thickness of the mailpiece, an up-lifting mechanism is used to push the bottom of the mailpiece in an upward direction against a shield plate, which is positioned substantially on the registration plane. A velocity measurement device, such as an optical encoder, is used to measure the moving speed of the belts so that the printing speed of the digital printer matches the moving speed of the mailpiece in the print area.

  • Patent number: 6947179
Abstract: A method for determining the information loss or conditional entropy in a paper channel where an imager produces an output from symbols printed on a substrate and a paper channel designed in accordance with such method. A parametric, statistical model of the channel is chosen. Test patterns are then transmitted through the channel to determine optimal parameter values for the model. These values are the used in the model to estimate the information loss in the channel. This information loss is used as a figure of merit in making design choices for the paper channel.

  • Patent number: 6940025
Abstract: A method of determining the mass of an article using a load cell. An article whose mass is to be determined is transported across a platform without stopping or slowing the article. A load cell measures the horizontal force applied to the load cell by the transported article. This horizontal force, along with the acceleration of the article, allows a determination of the mass of the article.

  • Patent number: 6928422
Abstract: A system that determines if mail contains life-harming materials before the mail enters the interior of a receptacle, i.e., mail box. This invention accomplishes the foregoing by issuing identification cards that uniquely identify mailers; having a scanner at a receptacle read the identification card and send the unique identifying code contained in the card to a data center that checks if the card is genuine; and stores the card's unique code before mail is permitted to enter the interior of the receptacle.

  • Patent number: 6911910
Abstract: Radio frequency identification tags are placed on mail contained in trays or tubs to locate and reroute mail that is misdirected, i.e., being routed to the incorrect destination. The method involves the carrier reading the identifying information contained in the radio frequency identification tags on each mail piece while each mail piece is in the trays or tubs and removing one or more mail pieces in the tray or tub that are to be routed differently than that routing information contained on the outside of the trays or tubs.

  • Patent number: 6909371
Abstract: A method for automatically changing the address and telephone number of an occupant when the occupant moves from one internal address to another internal address. The foregoing is accomplished by placing a radio frequency identification tag in occupant's nameplate, wherein the tag contains encoding information that identifies the occupant so that when the occupant changes his/her location, the nameplate may be used to update a data base and determine the occupant's new address and telephone number.

  • Patent number: 6907132
Abstract: A method and system for improving the capture of an OCR character region of a postage indicium, wherein the OCR character region may exhibit a defect associated with the production or the reading of the indicium. A plurality of error compensation marks is provided in the proximity of the OCR character region such that the error compensation marks are caused to exhibit one or more changes indicative of the defect of the OCR character region. Thus, the defect in the OCR character region can be identified by detecting the changes in the error compensation marks. Accordingly, the defect in the OCR character region can be compensated for when the OCR characters are interpreted.

  • Patent number: 6904525
Abstract: A method for verifying the source of an article of manufacture. A label having information relating to the article is prepared and digitally signed or otherwise encrypted to authenticate the information. The label and a tangible representation of the digital signature or other encrypted information are then securely associated with the article. The information relating to the article can include verifying information such as an expiration date, unique identification of the article, identification of an authorized provider of the article or a description of the article to protect against unauthorized use of duplicate labels. The label can also include an unreproduceable pattern such as a pattern of magnetic fibers embedded in the label and a digitally signed description of the pattern.

  • Patent number: 6869021
Abstract: A system and method that allows one to mark information with a pencil on a label equipped with a RFID type circuit, and have the marked information provided to the RFID circuit, or have the written information cause the RFID circuit to supply information regarding the goods that are contained in a individual container. Individual containers may be placed in a larger container. The marked entered information may be corrected by erasing the written information with a pencil eraser and writing new information on the paper with a pencil. Information may also be marked into a RFID circuit or have the marked information cause the RFID circuit to perform some function by utilizing a standard ink jet computer printer to print lines on paper equipped with a RFID type circuit, by having the printed lines perform the function of wires.

  • Patent number: 6865560
Abstract: A method and system for providing a delivery confirmation service to a mailer who uses a postage meter to pay the postage for mailing a mail piece. The mailer applies a shipping label containing an identification number on the mail piece to identify the mail piece and the mailer. The identification number is retrieved by the postage meter which sends the identification number to a data processing center or a meter refill data center for processing. Upon receiving the identification number, the data processing center sends a shipping file to the carrier. When the mail piece is delivered, a message regarding the delivery status of the mail piece is sent to the carrier by the mail deliverer. With the shipping file and the delivery status message, the carrier makes available the delivery status of the mail piece to the data processing center which stores the delivery status. Upon request, the data processing center communicates at least a portion of the delivery status to the mailer via a meter refill system.

  • Patent number: 6839690
Abstract: An Internet-based system that allows a buyer and a seller to obtain information about each other while remaining somewhat anonymous. The system provides historic information to buyer and seller by having a trusted third party give the buyer and seller the other party's trading history information without revealing the actual identity of the parties. A buyer registers with the trusted third party by submitting an online application. The trusted third party establishes a credit score for the buyer. A seller registers with the trusted third party by submitting an online application. The trusted third party establishes a score for the seller based upon the seller's trading history, reputation and financial standing. When the buyer chooses to purchase a product from a seller over the Internet, certain parameters i.e., dollar value of transaction, type of purchase, level of current outstanding credit available, credit score, etc.

  • Patent number: 6814291
Abstract: A method and system for reading a two-dimensional barcode symbol on a mailpiece. The barcode symbol may be distorted during the printing process or the image acquiring process, rendering it difficult to recognize by a conventional template matching method. Typically, a two-dimensional barcode symbol is composed on a two-dimensional array of visually contrasting blocks. Any group of four adjacent blocks sharing a common corner may form an identifiable pattern. These patterns can be used as internal landmarks. When the barcode symbol is distorted, the distances between the internal landmarks change accordingly. Using an Lp-norm algorithm to measure the distances in the transform domain, distortion can thus be determined and the global geometry of the barcode symbol restored based on the distance measurements.

  • Patent number: 6801932
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and system for remote receipt of a message, such as a telephone, e-mail, facsimile or paper message. A server or data center is provided for receiving messages from a sender communicating with a recipient mobile device. The mobile device is then prompted to notify the recipient that a message is waiting. If the recipient desires to receive the message, he/she indicates this on his/her mobile device. The mobile device and the device which will receive the message, i.e., the destination device, are provided with a tag for wireless communication. The message recipient is prompted to bring the mobile device in close enough proximity to the destination device such that the tag sends information about the destination devise to the mobile device. The mobile device communicates the information via wireless communications means with the data center.
