  • Patent number: 6297328
Abstract: Surfactant-containing acetoacetoxy-functional polymers (SAAP's) are described. The acetoacetoxy-functional polymer may be a surfactant-containing enamine-functional polymer and more preferably a surfactant-containing, polymeric (polyamino)enamine (PPAE). The PPAE is the reaction product of a surfactant-containing acetoacetoxy-functional polymer (SAAP) and a poly(alkylenimine). The polymers may be prepared as waterborne polymer compositions, such as latexes. The waterborne polymer compositions can be prepared with high solids content while maintaining low viscosity. Waterborne polymer compositions containing the polymers of the inventions are useful in a variety of coating formulations such as, for example, paints, inks, sealants, and adhesives. When used in coating formulations, the polymers of the invention provide adhesion and crosslinking in the final film or coating. The film or coating may be cured at ambient temperatures or may be thermally cured.

  • Patent number: 6262182
Abstract: The invention enables solution modification of a polyolefin with an unsaturated anhydride, unsaturated acid, or unsaturated ester, with high efficiency without the formation of undesirable impurities resulting from the competing reaction of the solvent with the unsaturated anhydride, unsaturated acid, or unsaturated ester. The process entails combining a polyolefin; a solvent; an unsaturated anhydride, unsaturated acid or unsaturated ester and a free-radical initiator to form a reaction mixture. The solvent is selected from the group consisting of substituted aromatic solvents which do not contain benzylic hydrogens and mixtures thereof. This reaction mixture is reacted under suitable conditions to produce a modified polyolefin.

  • Patent number: 6262169
Abstract: The latex polymer compositions of the present invention exhibit latent crosslinking properties. Latent crosslinking in the polymers takes advantage of the fast reaction that occurs between amine-reactive carbonyl groups in the polymer component and carbonyl-reactive amine nitrogens in the crosslinking component, but controls the rate of crosslinking by protonating the amines with a volatile acid. Once the latex is coated onto a substrate, the volatile acid evaporates and the carbonyl reactive amine nitrogens react with the amine reactive carbonyl groups to form a crosslinked coating.
