  • Patent number: 5675137
Abstract: The new generic bar code decoder system described, with its multistage error correcting, is far more powerful than dedicated reference decode algorithms for popular linear and two dimensional bar codes. For example: the 1-7 and 2-8 EAN and UPC character substitution problems are 100% solved (because EAN and UPC become 100% self-checking with the new decoder); the ink spread tolerance improves, especially for EAN, UPC, Code 128 and Code 16K; far greater levels of random systematic edge noise are tolerated and decoded; even many spike edge errors greater than 0.50.times. module can be corrected; and, generous levels of acceleration are tolerated. These are all the ways bar code scanning data gets distorted. Using this new generic decoder system, the ultimate linear binary coded binary bar code with error correcting, BCB, also described, performs dramatically better than any other, despite being more compact.

  • Patent number: 5635683
Abstract: This invention provides apparatus and a method which self-adjust the pressure response of a digitizer pointing device or other device incorporating a pressure transducer according to the characteristics of the particular device and/or particular user of the device. For example, a digitizer user when inputting with a stylus pointing device may use different writing styles in simulated paint brush and in simulated chalk, or, the user may use the stylus device entirely differently when using it in a game or in a graphic arts application, or different users may use the same stylus device differently for the same application. Certain pressure parameters of the device are not set on a fixed basis, which would provide for an average, typical or generic pressure range and resolution.

  • Patent number: 5632075
Abstract: A tool-carrier turret having a high displacement speed, particularly for lathes and work centres the rotatable table of which is provided with a plurality of supports for fixed tools and a plurality of supports for tools of the rotating type. The turret is provided with a single motor for driving the rotating tools and for displacement of the table through respective mechanical transmissions, as well as a device for commuting the drive from the electric motor to one or other of the mechanical transmissions in synchronism with the device for locking and releasing the table. An encoder is connected to the drive shaft of the rotatable table via a mechanical coupling which makes it possible to obtain a complete rotation of the encoder shaft for each angular displacement of the table between two successive tools.

  • Patent number: 5632537
Abstract: A crawler belt for use on a crawler motor vehicle has an elongate belt body drivable in a predetermined direction, and a plurality of ridges mounted on a ground contact side of the belt body, each of the ridges having at least one sipe defined in a free end thereof for allowing the ridge to be flexibly deformable in a direction opposite to the predetermined direction. Each of the ridges has a plurality of sipes defined therein and extending longitudinally thereof or substantially perpendicularly to the predetermined direction. The ridges comprise a plurality of chevron-shaped ridges pointing toward the predetermined direction and succesively arranged at predetermined spaced intervals in the predetermined direction. The ridges are divided into a plurality of groups each including a plurality of ridges by grooves extending transversely of the belt body, and divided into a plurality of segments by at least one longitudinal groove extending longitudinally of the belt body.

  • Patent number: 5625554
Abstract: The present invention solves a number of problems in using stems (canonical indicators of word meanings) in full-text retrieval of natural language documents, and thus permits recall to be improved without sacrificing precision. It uses various arrangements of finite-state transducers to accurately encode a number of desirable ways of mapping back and forth between words and stems, taking into account both systematic aspects of a language's morphological rule system and also the word-by-word irregularities that also occur. The techniques described apply generally across the languages of the world and are not just limited to simple suffixing languages like English. Although the resulting transducers can have many states and transitions or arcs, they can be compacted by finite-state compression algorithms so that they can be used effectively in resource-limited applications.

  • Patent number: 5620724
Abstract: The invention disclosed herein provides a way to engage a used concentrate packet such as a tea bag in a drink container in which a liquid product was made from the concentrate without removing the packet from the container and without having to directly contact the packet. Thus, one need not wet his or her fingers or anything in the area of the container, and the used packet when engaged will not interfere with drinking of the liquid product. The packet is also isolated from the interior of the drink container to inhibit further infusion or dissolving of any concentrate remaining in the packet, thereby to control the strength or concentration of the liquid product without having to remove the packet from the container. In the preferred embodiment the holder defines a compartment into which the used packet may be moved to isolate the packet from the interior of the drink container so as to inhibit further concentrating the liquid product from any concentrate in the packet.

  • Patent number: 5618310
Abstract: A device applies continuous tension to skin adjacent an ulcerative area, to expand and approximate this skin until it covers the ulcerative area. The new device includes a frame which defines a path in which sliders move under the force of a constant tension spring. Each slider includes a hook-like element that engages and pulls the skin until the skin on opposite sides of the ulcerative area comes together. This element is curved, thus defining a plane which is oriented perpendicular to the path of the slider.
