  • Patent number: 4834194
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for agitating and heating a sub-surface volume of soil to liberate volatile compositions therefrom which are transmitted through a special flow passage created through the soil to the soil surface where they are analysed to determine the presence or absence of selected contaminants. A low pressure sink is provided to ensure proper flow of volatiles rapidly to the surface and to prevent contamination of adjacent soil blocks or cylinders during treatment.

  • Patent number: 4820034
Abstract: A temple end piece for a temple of a spectacle frame is comprised of a first segment running essentially straight in the longitudinal direction of the temple, a connecting segment extending downward from the first segment, and a fitting segment intended for fitting on the head and/or behind the ear. The longitudinal fitting segment is borne and supported by the connecting segment, whereby this support is achieved at the longitudinal middle or at the lower end or in the region between the longitudinal middle and the lower end of the fitting segment, so that at least the upper half of the fitting segment projects freely upward to the first segment and can be deflected elastically in the direction toward the connecting segment. This capability of an elastic deflection is furnished by a suitable choice of material, as, for example, a suitable plastic material, and/or specially designed elastic regions.

  • Patent number: 4818390
Abstract: Apparatus for detoxification of a hazardous waste containing lagoon comprising a bi-directionally operable cable operated process tool which is pulled through the lagoon and distributes treatment chemicals therein while being continuously supplied with the treatment chemicals from a supply thereof remote from the process tool. The process tool has a specially designed mixing throat and a flexible cable supported multi-panel shroud is disclosed for preventing the escape of toxic gases generated in the area of the process tool where mixing takes place to atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4812781
Abstract: A differential variable gain transconductance amplifier suitable for but not limited to applications requiring operation with a power supply of less than 1.0V. The circuit is suitable for fabrication by integrated circuit technology and is composed of three major blocks: an input stage, a current summing gain control stage, and an output stage. The differential input stage is comprised of two identical voltage-to-current converters, with one used as the positive input and the other as the negative input. The current summing stage uses the principal of summation of opposite but equal currents canceling to produce attenuated gain. The output stage converts current into voltage and produces a single ended output.

  • Patent number: 4809790
Abstract: A device for extracting an undisturbed sample of soil to be tested from a subsurface location uses a cutter to remove unwanted soil from above the undisturbed sample. The device is particularly intended for extraction of soil from contaminated areas without loss of contaminants which are volatile at ambient temperatures. The device also is capable of chilling or freezing the sample in situ before extraction and testing. A method of using the device to take samples whenever volatile contaminants are sensed is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4805638
Abstract: The present device for the photogrammetrical measurement of the human head, especially of the middle region of the face with the eye sockets, the nose, the cheek bones and the brows, is comprised of a projector for projecting a pattern image onto the face and two cameras which can simultaneously take two pictures from two different directions of the face and head with the pattern image projected on it. The two cameras and the projector are supported by an apparatus carrier, which can be moved in a vertical direction relative to a base permanently connected to the device and in at least one horizontal direction. This minimum of one direction coincides with the optical axes of the cameras. The device will facilitate bringing both the projector and the cameras on the one hand and the human head on the other into the required relative position to one another as necessary to take the pictures.

  • Patent number: 4804260
Abstract: A temple for a pair of eyeglasses with a longitudinal shaft and a temple end piece exhibits a telescoping connection between a first segment of the temple end piece and the shaft end facing this temple end piece. The connection further comprises a fixation device, which fixes or holds the shaft and end piece together. Either of the opposed walls of the telescoping connection are designed to be essentially cylindrical. Preferably, numerous ribs protrude radially from the other wall with the ribs running in the axial direction of the connection and finally holding the telescoping connection together. On account of this, the angle of the temple end piece with respect to the hinge on the temle shaft can be adjusted during assembly and then a connection is created between the temple end piece and the shaft which is resistant to rotational as well as pulling forces.

  • Patent number: 4795247
Abstract: A process for fitting temple end pieces onto the ends of the temples of a spectacle frame with a simplified manner of trimming the ends of the temples to the proper length and affixation of the temple end pieces thereto in the proper angle of rotation about the axes of the temples is disclosed together with apparatus for performing the process.

  • Patent number: 4787728
Abstract: A temple for a spectacle frame has a plug connection between the shaft of the temple and temple end piece first made separately from the shaft of the temple. The plug connection is comprised of a borehole in one of the two elements and a plug on the other of the two elements, which plug is inserted into the borehole, as well as a fixing mechanism for ensuring the relative position between the temple end piece and the shaft. The fixing mechanism has a clamping element, which can assume various axial positions with respect to the peripheral wall surrounding the borehole and which, depending on its axial position, more or less sharply compresses the peripheral wall radially and through this means clamps the plug firmly in the borehole. This design of the fixing mechanism facilitates an exact setting of the length of the temple and of the inner inclination of the temple in adapting it to the geometry of the head of the individual spectacle wearer.

  • Patent number: 4776409
Abstract: An apparatus (U) is shown in FIGS. 11-13 that includes a power operated vehicle (V) that supports a vertically movable frame (W) that has a confined space defining shroud (X) on the lower end thereof that may be placed in sealing contact with the upper surface of a hazardous waste impoundment (Y) at a first station to permit the insitu detoxification of a desired portion of the impoundment. At least one power driven blade (Z) is rotated downwardly from within the shroud (X) into the impoundment to form a vertically extending zone (A-1) of particled material that is treated with a detoxifying agent that may be chemical, biological or heat from one or more plasma torches. Gases emitted during the formation of the particled zone (A-1) are subjected to scrub action by a liquid within shroud (X) and the liquid returned to zone (A-1). After the detoxification of a zone has been completed the apparatus (U) is moved to a succession of overlapping second stations where the above described method is repeated.

  • Patent number: 4762407
Abstract: The process in accordance with the present invention is especially well-suited for the preparation of spectacles with a correction effect which are adapted both optically and mechanically, whereby the mechanical adaptation is objectified to at least a considerable degree and the mechanical adaptation depends to a lesser extent or not at all on subjective evaluations of the fits of the spectacles on the part of the fitter or the spectacle wearer. For each nose piece of the spectacles the location of at least one nose point on or near the contact surface at which the bridge reposing surface touches the nose, is measured in space relative to two reference points, for example, the eye centers. From this nose point measurement the location of the pad nose piece reposing surface which the latter is to occupy in space on the completed spectacles is determined, which occurs, for example, under the assumption of pressureless contact between the contact surface and the reposing surface.

  • Patent number: 4755042
Abstract: A temple end piece for a temple of a spectacle frame has a first segment extending in the extension of the temple shaft and situated below this a curved contact segment. The contact segment is supported at its lower end by means of a connecting segment extending to the rear of and downward from the first segment, whereby a low-resistance hinge is formed between the lower ends of the contact and connecting segments. At its lower end the contact segment is connected to the first segment via an elastic spring element, which opposes a rotation movement of the contact segment in the hinge with a certain elastic force. The first segment, the connecting segment and also the contact segment can be given rather sturdy dimensions with attention to the requisite rigidity of form of the temple end piece. Yet by virtue of the hinge provision is made for sufficient mobility of the contact segment.
