Patent number: 5882132Abstract: A side knock-type mechanical pencil comprises: a barrel, a push member supported on the side wall of the barrel, and a sliding tube longitudinally slidably inserted in the barrel so as to correspond to the push member and internally provided with a lead passage. An angular cam portion formed in a middle portion of the sliding tube has a stepped surface consisting of a high slope and a pair of low slopes. The pair of side members of the push member touch the pair of low slopes in the initial stage of the pushing operation, and the top member which joins the pair of side members the high slope in a final stage of the pushing operation. The axis of a back portion is displaced from the axis of the barrel to a side opposite the side of the push member. A funnel-shaped lead receiving portion is formed integrally with the back portion at the back end of the same.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1997Date of Patent: March 16, 1999Assignee: Kotobuki & Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hidehei Kageyama, Yoshio Noguchi

Patent number: 5881192Abstract: A method and apparatus which can couple a high intensity point source, such as from a single fiber, to a fiber bundle. A bundle of fibers is fed though a hole in the light post. A removable potting compound is applied to the tip of the bundle to hold the fibers together for polishing. The tip of the bundle is polished and then the potting compound is removed from the tip of the bundle. A window is placed over a light inlet of the hole so as to seal the bundle. A point source cable introduces a point source of light to the bundle of fibers. A ferrule is provided around the point source cable, having a diameter sized corresponding to a diameter of said light post. The ferrule and the bundle of fibers are clamped with a split sleeve which extends therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: Cogent Light Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Chingfa Chen, Fred P. Patent number: 5876940Abstract: The present invention relates to a functional screen assay for nonsense or frameshift mutations that allows genes of interest to be scanned. This assay is based on the cloning of segments of the gene of interest in-frame with a sequence coding for a marker followed by screening for the level of expression of the marker. Individuals at risk for any one of a number of genetic diseases, which are associated with such nonsense or frameshift mutations, can be quickly screened for chain-terminating mutations introduced by these nonsense and frameshift mutations. At present, scanning of many genes for mutations requires significant effort because the genes are large and most mutations are unique. Therefore, this assay offers a powerful option for the diagnosis of many genetic diseases.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1997Date of Patent: March 2, 1999Assignee: University of Utah Research FoundationInventors: Joanna L. Patent number: 5869242Abstract: A method for determining the presence of polymorphisms, including mutations, in nucleic acids by using mass spectrometry is presented. The method requires amplification of the nucleic acid region to be analyzed followed by analysis by mass spectrometry and comparison of the obtained spectrum with spectra obtained from wild-type sequences and/or sequences known to contain the polymorphism. Differences between the spectra, either the appearance or disappearance of one or more peaks indicating a change in mass or a change in the height of one or more peaks indicating a change in the amount of nucleic acid of a specific mass, indicate the presence of a polymorphism. Variations of the method involve digestion of the amplified nucleic acid, e.g., by using restriction enzymes, nucleases or chemical methods, prior to analysis by mass spectrometry. The method can be applied to any type of nucleic acid including genomic DNA, CDNA and RNA.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1995Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Myriad Genetics, Inc.Inventor: Alexander Kamb

Patent number: 5865257Abstract: In the method for extinguishing fires in enclosed spaces, pre-cooled combustion products are introduced into an enclosed space until in the enclosed space there is an atmosphere that prevents combustion. An ecologically acceptable and fire-inhibiting medium that is not detrimental to health is formed by oxidizing the combustion products completely by an oxygen-containing oxidizing agent prior to cooling. An apparatus for implementing the method has a housing (1) which is divided by a transversely running partition wall (11) having at least one wall opening (15). At the at least one wall opening (15) a mixing tube (8) is mounted coaxially with respect to a discharge nozzle (2) connected to a combustion chamber (14), the end of the mixing tube remote from the partition wall (11) opening into the atmosphere. The space (7) between the mixing tube (8) and the inner wall of the housing (1) is filled with a coolant.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1997Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: R-Amtech International, Inc.Inventors: Valeriy Nikolaevitch Kozyrev, Valeriy Nilovitch Yemelyanov, Alexey Ivanovitch Sidorov, Vladimir Andreevitch Andreev

Patent number: 5857832Abstract: The invention provides a restraint and transfer device for restraining a seated passenger, such as a child, for transport in a vehicle and for mechanically lifting the passenger in and out of the vehicle. A mounting frame is secured to a passenger seat of the vehicle with standard lap and shoulder seat belts. A cushioned transfer seat insert is used to seat the passenger in a suitably adapted wheelchair, during lifting in and out of the vehicle, and within the vehicle securely mounted to the frame. As a result, the passenger remains seated in a rigid supporting transfer seat insert. The passenger is not subjected to physical handling and the risk of injury to the caregiver and passenger is reduced during transfer. Releasable body postural positioning belts secure the passenger to the insert and the configuration of insert cushions, supports and postural belts can be flexibly adapted to suit the needs of each individual passenger.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1997Date of Patent: January 12, 1999Assignee: Bloorview MacMillan CentreInventors: Ihsan Al-Temen, Michael Doell, John Hancock, Stephen Ryan
