Abstract: A drilled hole (1) is produced by means of a drilling rod assembly comprig a succession of rod elements (7d) to be arranged end to end. For this purpose, a vertical shaft (2) is produced in the ground, of constant horizontal section and preferably insufficient for a man to be able to work towards the bottom of it, the rod assembly is displaced therein from an opening located in a front wall of the shaft, and the elements (7) of the rod assembly are selected so that they have an axial length less than the distance separating the said opening in the front wall of the shaft from the opposite rear wall.

Abstract: A composite drill pipe has an improved means of attaching a metal end fitting to a composite tubular member using corresponding annular grooves in the metal end fitting and the composite tubular member. In addition to annular grooves for axial loads, a plurality of axial grooves can also be included to accommodate greater torsional loads. The composite pipe body can also include a buildup made of a compliant rubber layer, a composite overwrap, and a wear pad in order to reduce the effective buckling node spacing to even further increase the axial load capability.
Abstract: An insect killing system optimized for mosquitoes uses multiple thermal gradients to simulate the breathing and body heat from animals, including human beings and fowl, to attract insects for subsequent electrocution. The system comprises an elongated, generally parallelepiped housing supported upon a lower base. A heating tower shrouded by the housing supports a spaced apart, generally pyramidal roof. Several slits penetrate the base to permit air entry. An internal fan draws air into the base where the air mixes with scent and pheromones. Mixed air is blown into and through the heating tower. An internal baffle divides the tower interior into separate, spaced apart compartments. A lower compartment houses a heater, and an adjacent upper compartment vents warmed air to atmosphere, creating numerous separate streams of warmed air that, to an insect, emulate human breathing. The baffle restricts air flow to create a pressure differential while ensuring adequate residence time to sufficiently warm the air.

Abstract: Described herein is a variable directional antenna apparatus wherein an electrical length of a parasitic antenna of a paired two-element Yagi antenna is varied to change antenna directivity. A radio device (12) outputs a received signal corresponding to the intensity of an electric field received by a first antenna. A control circuit (15) outputs a control signal to a variable impedance circuit (14) according to the result of detection of the received signal so as to change the impedance of the variable impedance circuit (14) according to the control signal. Thus, an electrical length of a second antenna (13) placed in parallel away from the first antenna (10) is changed to thereby activate the second antenna as a director or reflector, whereby antenna directivity is varied.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for real-time control of an analytical or diagnostic instrument, including a host computer including an operating system and at least one driver or application program for controlling the operation of the analytical or diagnostic instrument, an expert system containing a knowledge base of various states of the analytical or diagnostic instrument, relationships between data generated by the instrument and the states of the instrument, and actions to be taken in response to the existence of a certain state based on received data from the instrument, an interface between the operating system and the expert system for retrieving the data generated by the instrument through interaction with the operating system, providing the data to the expert system, and providing instructions for the driver or the application program to the operating system based on a response of the expert system to the data.
Abstract: In a roulette wheel assembly, canoes, which equiangularly spaced around a circle intermediate a wheel and an upper track where travel of a roulette ball begins, are modified. Air outlets are provided in each canoe. Air from a source is controlled to provide randomized outputs of air from each canoe in order to affect the travel of a ball in a vicinity of a canoe in order to increase randomization of travel of the ball.
Abstract: The 12-lipoxygenase product, 12(S)-HETE, mediates hyperproliferative and hyperplastic responses seen in atherosclerosis, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, stroke-induced nerve damage and cancer. 12-HETE also mediates inflammation and cell death in some cell systems, particularly B-islet cells of the pancreas. The present invention involves amelioration of disease states mediated by 12(S)-HETE by blocking specific 12(S)-HETE receptors.
Abstract: A reverse transcriptase assay is described. A modular nanostructure comprising relatively small and relatively long RNA sequences is utilized in the assay.
Abstract: A mutant male-sterile soybean line designated msMOS is disclosed. This shows genic male sterility at a new locus designated "msMOS". Male sterility appears to be the result of impaired tetrad callose degeneration due to an absence of functional callase enzyme.
Abstract: The screen of a display such as a liquid crystal display can be divided into an input data display region comprised of at least one line, in which characters selected by a user are displayed, and a software keyboard display region comprised of three lines, in which a software keyboard is displayed. A dot pattern showing a boundary between the input data display region and the software keyboard display region is also provided. A blank dot pattern is further provided between any two adjacent rows of keys or characters on the on-screen software keyboard so that the three rows of keys or characters on the on-screen software keyboard are spaced. The user can select a character displayed in the software keyboard display region by using a cursor key and an OK key.
Abstract: The invention relates to a DNA sequence comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a prepro-neuropeptide Y (PreproNPY) where the leucine amino acid in position 7 of the signal peptide part of said preproNPY has been replaced by proline. The invention concerns further the mutant signal peptide as such or associated with any other cleavage product of preproNPY, methods for the determination, in a biological sample, of said DNA sequence or said peptide. Furthermore, this invention relates to a method for diagnosing a predisposition for increased serum cholesterol or LDL cholesterol level in a human subject, and to methods for treating a human subject diagnosed for predisposition for increased serum cholesterol or LDL cholesterol. Transgenic animals carrying either the mutant sequence or the normal sequence are also within the scope of this invention.

Abstract: An aroma therapy delivery system is disclosed which incorporates a shaving unit as the delivery vehicle and a water soluble chemical encapsulator as the scent delivery package. The shaving assembly unit may be of a disposable cartridge type adapted for coupling to and uncoupling from a razor handle or may be integral with a handle so that the complete razor is discarded as a unit when the blade or blades become dulled. In either example, the top side of the handle of the shaving unit provides a surface for the affixing of a timed water soluble encapsulated material which comprises varying quantities of scent emitting substances. As the shaving assembly unit is immersed in water during the act of shaving, the particular aroma is released and delivered for the user's olfactory enjoyment.
