Abstract: Compositions of ketene dimer and nonreactive hydrophobe compound and method for internally sizing paper therewith are provided, wherein the melting point of said hydrophobe compound is higher than the melting point of the ketene dimer.
Abstract: A crosslinked polymer composition obtained by the metathesis polymerization of a dicyclopentadiene monomer in which a chlorinated polymer such as a chlorinated elastomer or chlorinated polypropylene is dissolved; a crosslinked dicyclopentadiene polymer composition comprising a ring-opened dicyclopentadiene polymer and a dicyclopentadiene-soluble chlorinated polymer; and a method for preparing a crosslinked polymer composition comprising adding the chlorinated polymer to one of two reactant liquid streams, one of which contains dicyclopentadiene and a ring-opening metathesis catalyst and the other contains a catalyst activator, combining the two streams, and charging them to a mold or similar forming container in which the dicyclopentadiene polymerizes.
Abstract: Fillers and pigments, such as clay, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, silicas, and silicoaluminates, can be rendered cationic by treating the fillers or pigments with the reaction product of a polyamine or polyamide and epichlorohydrin. The resulting water soluble cationic fillers or pigments are useful in the paper industry as fillers for paper and can also be utilized in coating paper.
Abstract: An innerliner for tubeless tires is comprised of at least one non-elastomeric barrier layer such as poly(vinylidene chloride) or ethylene--vinyl alcohol copolymer film with each barrier layer sandwiched between two layers of an elastomeric material adhering to the rubber stock employed in the carcass of the tire. The innerliner has the advantage of imparting equal or better air retention properties to the tire with a substantial reduction in the thickness and weight relative to conventional halobutyl rubber innerliners.
Abstract: A process for preparing the sodium or calcium salt of propionic acid, comprising fermenting with the bacterium Selenomonas ruminantium an aqueous medium containing corn steep liquor or soy peptone, lactic acid, carbon dioxide, and sodium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, or calcium hydroxide as a neutralizing agent, the said process providing a yield in the said medium of at least 1% of the salt of propionic acid.
Abstract: A process for starting up the continuous production of butyric acid by fermentation of a medium containing a starting amount of a nutrient substrate and a microorganism that converts the nutrient into butyric acid, that avoids an excess of nutrient in the fermentation broth and comprises the steps of (1) fermenting in a fermentor in batch style an amount of the medium that is substantially less than the working volume of the fermentor until the amount of the nutrient not yet converted is no more than a small fraction of the starting amount, (2) adding medium to the fermentor without removing any of the fermentation broth, until it contains approximately its working volume, then, (3) while continuing the addition, removing the fermentation broth containing the butyric acid product at a continuous rate that maintains a constant volume of medium in the fermentor, and thereafter maintaining continuous operation of the fermentation.
Abstract: Flame retardance of polymers prepared by metathesis polymerization of cycloolefins is improved by treatment of molded articles with a halogenated hydrocarbon capable of entering into radical chain transfer reactions with the carbon-carbon unsaturation present in the polymer recurring unit.
Abstract: A process for producing a molded article by introducing a reactive liquid mixture which comprises a cycloalkene containing dicyclopentadiene, a norbornene-type monomer containing at least one N-substituted 5-membered cyclic imide group and a metathesis polymerization catalyst system and which has moderated metathesis polymerizability into a mold in which the liquid mixture is metathesis polymerized, and a multi-part polymerizable composition for producing the molded article.
Abstract: A method for improving the properties of a metathesis polymerized cycloolefin article by treating with molecular halogen in an organic solvent. Degree of treatment can be regulated according to the swelling power of the solvent for the polymer. Improved properties include improved flame retardance, oxidation resistance and surface properties.
