  • Patent number: 5771863
Abstract: An integrated intake manifold-fuel rail construction with a separately molded trough-shaped fuel rail component friction welded to a runner spanning mounting plate molded as a part of the manifold. A filter is installed within the fuel rail component to intercept particles generated by the friction welding process to prevent their entry into the fuel injectors, each having one end installed in one of a series of sockets formed in the fuel rail component.

  • Patent number: 4611388
Abstract: A heterojunction bipolar transistor having an n- type epitaxial indium phosphide collector layer grown on a semi-insulating indium phosphide substrate with an n+ buried layer, a p- type indium phosphide base and an epitaxial, n- type boron phosphide wide gap emitter. The p- type base region is formed by ion implantation of magnesium ions into the collector layer. The transistor is applicable to millimeter wave applications due to the high electron mobility in the indium phosphide base. The wide gaps of both the boron phosphide (2.2 eV) and indium phosphide (1.34 eV) permit operation up to 350.degree. C. The transistor is easily processed using metal organic-chemical vapor deposition (MO-CVD) and standard microelectronic techniques.

  • Patent number: 4397380
Abstract: Fail safe electromagnetic clutch (10) includes a driving member (12) and a driven member (16). Engagement structure (30) cushions engagement between the driving member (12) and driven member (16) when the clutch is engaged. The engagement structure (30) includes a pair of elements (36, 34) and a resilient wave washer (42) located therebetween. The waver washer (42) biases the element (36) into driving engagement with the driving member (12) and biases the element (34) into driving engagement with the driven member (16). When the clutch is disengaged, a magnetic coil (22) forces the element (34) away from the driven member (16), thereby collapsing the wave washer (42). When the clutch is to be re-engaged, the coil (22) is de-energized, thereby permitting the wave washer (42) to drive the element (34) back into driving engagement with the driven member (16).

  • Patent number: 4244023
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the various functions of an internal combustion engine using a program-controlled microprocessor having a memory preprogrammed with various control laws and associated control schedules receives information concerning one or more engine-operating parameters such as manifold pressure, throttle position, engine coolant temperature, air temperature, engine speed or period and the like. These parameters are sensed and then supplied to input circuits for signal conditioning and conversion to digital words usable by the microprocessor system. The microprocessor system computes a digital word indicative of a computer-commanded engine control operation and output circuitry responds to predetermined computer-generated commands and to the computed digital command words for converting them to corresponding pulse-width control signals for controlling such engine operations as fuel-injection, ignition timing, proportional and/or on-off EGR control, and the like.
