Patent number: 6184794Abstract: A battery tester for use in combination with a portable lighting device such as a flashlight or lantern having a housing for retaining at least one battery including first and second terminals, each in electrical contact with an opposite pole of the battery, a conductor located on the exterior of the housing and having one end in electrical contact with the first terminal and an opposite end operably connectable to the second terminal. An indicator material overlies and is in responsive contact with the conductor to respond to and indicate a state that is present in the conductor. The indicator material is preferably a thermochromic ink responsive to heat changes in the conductor caused by a current flowing therethrough. The conductor and indicator material are preferably mounted on a flexible substrate imprinted with decorative ink and indicia and protected by a transparent protective layer.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1996Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Eveready Battery Company, Inc.Inventor: Gary R. Tucholski

Patent number: 5957358Abstract: A battery strip dispenser for dispensing user-selectable combinations of batteries to consumers. The battery strip dispenser includes a dispensing mechanism for holding batteries, and further includes a battery strip containing a plurality of batteries packaged in flexible packaging material. The battery strip includes a plurality of packages, each containing a battery, and has perforations formed in the packaging material between adjacent packaged batteries. The battery strip can be dispensed from the dispensing mechanism, and packaged batteries can be separated from other batteries in the battery strip by tearing at the perforations to separate a desired number of batteries.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Eveready Battery Company, Inc.Inventors: Rose A. Getz, Lewis F. Urry

Patent number: 5948561Abstract: An electrochemical cell and method for achieving increased anode-to-cathode interface area to realize enhanced service performance are disclosed. A first electrode, such as a cathode, is provided in a container and a cavity is formed in the first electrode. A tubular separator is disposed within the cavity by inserting a conductive plate against the separator to form first and second separator compartments. The conductive plate is preferably coated with active first electrode material, such as manganese dioxide, and the plate is interference fit within the cavity. A second electrode, such as an anode, is disposed within each of the first and second separator compartments. A collector is assembled in contact with the anode and a cover and seal assembly is assembled to the top of the container.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1997Date of Patent: September 7, 1999Assignee: Eveready Battery Company, Inc.Inventor: Lewis F. Urry

Patent number: 5944407Abstract: An illumination device functioning as both a flashlight and an area table lamp having a flexible neck that connects a light housing to a base. The illumination device includes at least one light source mounted in the light housing for projecting light through either a diffusing lens to function as an area light or a projecting lens to function as a flashlight. An improved flexible neck for an illumination device is also disclosed that has a dampening mechanism and a retaining mechanism disposed in an elongated solid resilient body. The retaining mechanism counters the resilient force of the resilient body to retain a selected position of the flexible neck while the dampening mechanism serves to dampen a bouncing effect that commonly occurs in flexible necks of flashlights.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1996Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Eveready Battery Company, Inc.Inventors: Peter F. Lynch, Mark A. Ferguson, Robert L. Naas, David R. Dalton
