Abstract: A method of improving the brake and clutch capacity of a functional fluid comprising adding a friction-modifying amount of a polyalkenyl sulfonate to the functional fluid, wherein the polyalkenyl sulfonate is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of a polyalkene sulfonic acid derived from a mixture of polyalkenes comprising greater than about 20 mole percent alkyl vinylidene and 1,1-dialkyl isomers.
Abstract: An improved process for the preparation of polyalkylphenoxyaminoalkanes which comprises the aminoethylation of a polyalkylphenol compound in the presence of a basic catalyst with 2-oxazolidinone or a derivative thereof having the following formula:
wherein R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to about 6 carbon atoms and wherein the polyalkyl group of said polyalkylphenol has an average molecular weight in the range of about 600 to 5,000 and wherein the process is carried out in the presence of an alcohol.
Abstract: A hydraulic oil, a predominant amount of an oil having a viscosity suitable for lubrication, and from 0.03% to 0.06% of an agent improving filterability, corresponding to the formula R—Z. Z represents an ester of succinic acid comprising the reaction product of a succinic anhydride and an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol; or a succinimide comprising the reaction product of a succinic anhydride and a polyamine, the said reaction product being treated with an after-treatment agent. R represents a polyolefin having a molecular weight (Mn) of 500 to 2500 and an Mw/Mn ratio of 1 to 5.

Abstract: A lubricating oil composition having a low P content of 0.01 to 0.1 wt. %, and a sulfated ash of 0.1 to 1 wt. %, which is composed of a) a major amount of mineral base oil having a low S content of at most 0.1 wt. %; b) an ashless alkenyl or alkyl-succinimide dispersant; c) a metal-containing detergent (non-sulfurized alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an alkylsalicylic acid and/or non-sulfurized alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an alkylphenol derivative having a Mannich base structure); d) Zn-DTP; e) an oxidation inhibitor (phenol compound and/or amine compound) and wherein the sulfur content is 0.01 to 0.3 wt %. The lubricating oil composition shows good high temperature detergency notwithstanding its low S, P, and sulfated ash content, and is favorably employable in diesel engines using fuel of an extremely low sulfur content.
Abstract: A lubricating oil composition containing a base oil of lubricating viscosity, overbased sulfurized alkylphenate detergent or its calcium salt, an overbased alkylsulfonate detergent or its calcium salt, an ashless dispersant, and a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate and/or zinc diaryidithiophosphate is described. The lubricating oil composition provides improved heat stability and anti-wear performance in marine diesel engines operated under severe conditions where the cylinder liner temperature may reach 200 to 260° C.
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for removing excess amounts of water-soluble amines from a diluted crude Mannich condensation product containing about 40 to 80 weight percent crude Mannich condensation product in an inert solvent which comprises:
a) filtering the diluted crude Mannich condensation product in the presence of magnesium silicate and water, and in the further presence of a filter aid when the particle size distribution of the magnesium silicate is such that the average particle size is below about 50 microns; and
b) recovering a filtrate containing a Mannich condensation product having less than about 0.05 mEq/g of water-soluble amine.
Abstract: A polyalklpyroroplidine compound of the formula: ##STR1## or a fuel-soluble salt thereof; wherein R.sub.1 is a polyalkyl group having an average molecular weight in the range of from about 500 to 5,000;R.sub.2 is a straight- or branched-chain alkylene group having from about 2 to 6 carbon atoms;is R.sub.3 is H or CH.sub.3 ; andx is an integer from about 0 to 4.The polyalkylpyrrolidines of the present invention are useful as fuel additives for the prevention and control of engine deposits.
Abstract: A lubricating oil composition has an oil of lubricating viscosity, plus minor portions of alkylated aminophenol and zinc dithiophosphate. Preferably, about 75 mol % of the alkyl groups of the zinc dithiophosphate are derived from primary alcohols. The alkylated aminophenol can be a borated 4-alkyl-2-aminophenol having, as its alkyl group, a polypropylene tetramer having from 18 to 30 carbon atoms.
Abstract: A compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a polyisobutanyl group derived from a highly reactive polyisobutene having an average molecular weight in the range of from about 500 to 5,000;R.sub.2 is an alkylene group having from about 2 to 6 carbon atoms; andx is an integer from about 1 to 4.The polyisobutanyl succinimides of the present invention are useful as fuel additives for the prevention and control of engine deposits.
