  • Patent number: 8294445
Abstract: Techniques for mitigating interference from a switching voltage regulator by intelligently varying the switcher frequency of the switching voltage regulator are provided. In one aspect, the switcher frequency is set by adjusting a frequency setting input to a programmable clock divider. In a further aspect, a processor drives a programmable clock divider which receives a value representative of a dividing factor by which to divide a reference clock frequency signal to generate a desired switcher frequency for the switching voltage regulator. Values of the programmable clock divider are selectively varied to achieve optimal performance and mitigate the effect of switcher frequency spurious content for a given operating condition or conditions.

  • Patent number: 8265568
Abstract: A synchronized frequency divider that can divide a clock signal in frequency and provide differential output signals having good signal characteristics is described. In one exemplary design, the synchronized frequency divider includes a single-ended frequency divider and a synchronization circuit. The single-ended frequency divider divides the clock signal in frequency and provides first and second single-ended signals, which may be complementary signals having timing skew. The synchronization circuit resamples the first and second single-ended signals based on the clock signal and provides differential output signals having reduced timing skew. In one exemplary design, the synchronization circuit includes first and second switches and first and second inverters. The first switch and the first inverter form a first sample-and-hold circuit or a first latch that resamples the first single-ended signal.

  • Patent number: 8198944
Abstract: Techniques for calibrating digitally controlled oscillators (DCOS) are disclosed. In one aspect of the disclosure, an initial set of control codes for operating the DCO with a coarse frequency tuning bank with multiple overlapping coarse frequency tuning segments (LTBs) and one fine main frequency tuning bank (MTB) is determined. A range of output frequencies produced from the initial set is identified. Instances of overlap are identified in the frequency range between consecutive LTB segments. An offset in the MTB is added that corresponds to the overlap instance between consecutive LTBs to establish a revised set. The revised control codes are utilized to tune the DCO over the desired frequency range.

  • Patent number: 8085865
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting digital data in a cellular environment. Adjacent cells of the cellular system are prevented from simultaneously transmitting data. Because the noise from transmissions of adjacent cells is a primary source of interference, the transmission rate of power limited base stations can be dramatically increased when the noise from adjacent cells is eliminated. The transmissions to each subscriber station are made at a fixed transmission power level. However, the data rate of transmitted signals differs from one subscriber station to another depending the path loss differences. In a first exemplary embodiment, the data rate of transmissions to a subscriber station is determined by selecting an encoding rate for the transmitted signal while holding the symbol rate constant.

  • Patent number: 8046005
Abstract: A novel and improved method and system for paging a cellular telephone or other wireless terminal using two paging channels that reduces standby mode power consumption described. In one embodiment of the invention, a minimally encoded quick paging channel is established over which short, quick page messages are transmitted during one of a set of quick paging slots. The quick page message indicates that a communications request has been received, and that the receiving communication terminals should process a highly encoded full paging channel over which more detailed, full page messages are transmitted during the next full paging slot. A terminal monitors full paging channel only after a quick page message has been received on the quick paging channel.

  • Patent number: 8031622
Abstract: In a communication system (100) for decoding a quick paging channel (QPCH), a receiver (200) determines a channel condition of a pilot channel received at a mobile station (102-104). A control system (210, 401) determines receive diversity at the receiver (200) by determining a number of a plurality of receiver chains (290) in the receiver (200) for receive diversity based on the determined channel condition. The receiver (200) determines a first data bit of the QPCH in accordance with processing of one or more signals produced based on the determined receive diversity. The control system (210, 401) is configured for reducing the number of selected receiver chains (290) when the determined channel condition is above a first channel condition threshold (601) and increasing the number of selected receiver chains (290) when the determined channel condition is below a second channel condition threshold (602).

  • Patent number: 7979078
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method efficiently manage reverse link communication in a communication system having geographically distributed base stations. Coupled load information is exchanged between base stations allowing a base station to determine an appropriate allocation of reverse link channel resources to mobile stations served by the base station. Since the allocation of reverse link channels resources are controlled directly by the base station, delays due to communications with a central controller are eliminated. As a result, adverse effects of load scheduling based on obsolete reverse channel information are minimized.

  • Patent number: 7936690
Abstract: Techniques to support independent power control of multiple channels in CDMA systems (e.g., a W-CDMA system) that define a single power control feedback stream on the uplink, which is to be used for downlink power control. In one aspect, the single feedback stream is “time shared” among multiple channels requiring individual power control. Various time-sharing schemes may be used to implement multiple (substantially parallel) feedback substreams based on the single feedback stream, and different combination of feedback rates may also be achieved for the substreams. Each feedback substream may be assigned to, and used for power control of, a respective channel. In another aspect, multiple feedback substreams are implemented based on multiple fields in newly defined slot formats.

  • Patent number: 7920661
Abstract: A decision feedback equalizer (DFE) processes a signal having multiple code channels by filtering an error signal based on a difference between a received signal and an estimated received signal. The received signal is processed to recover data on each of the code channels and to generate an estimate of a transmitted signal corresponding to the received signal. A channel estimate is applied to the resulting estimated transmitted signal to generate the estimated received signal. After the filter filters the error signal, a combiner combines the filtered error signal and the estimated transmitted signal.

  • Patent number: 7720501
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method efficiently manage reverse link resources by allowing a mobile station to select between transmitting a payload at a standard power level and transmitting a smaller payload at a boosted power level. The mobile station, therefore, can autonomously select a QoS (Quality of Service) level for physical layer packets. Based on reverse link transmission information received from a base station, the mobile station derives a reverse link transmission guideline defining the power levels and associated payloads for at least a standard service and boosted service. The mobile station selects a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size where the standard payload size is greater than the boosted payload size.

  • Patent number: 7684329
Abstract: A system (100) and various methods and apparatus for efficient communications of data across various protocol layers are disclosed. A control and transceiver system (1400) configured for determining a data rate control (DRC) value and for transmission a maximum number of time slots allowed for transmission of a physical layer packet of data (510). After detecting a normal termination of transmission, the decoding thresholds (401, 402) are adjusted for decoding a positive acknowledgment message, and repeating decoding of acknowledgment channel (340) with the adjusted thresholds (401, 402). Retransmitting the physical layer packet of data at least one more time after based on whether the repeat of decoding of the acknowledgment channel (340) produces a negative acknowledgment message. The retransmission may be conditioned upon a throughput level of communications between the base station and the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 7664209
Abstract: A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. The mobile station receives a command which instructs the mobile station as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indicates of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both the origination base station and a mobile station. The mobile station tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station coordinates the transmission of reports, which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station when the mobile station is tuned to the origination frequency.

  • Patent number: 7660282
Abstract: Techniques for congestion control are disclosed. In one embodiment, a base station allocates a shared resource using a combination of zero or more individual grants and zero or more common grants, and generates a busy signal in response to loading conditions that exceed a pre-determined level. In another embodiment, a subset of transmitting mobile stations reduce their transmission rate in response to a busy signal. The subset may include autonomous transmission, commonly granted transmission, individually granted transmission, or any combination thereof. In various embodiments, rate adjustment may be probabilistic or deterministic. In one embodiment, a rate table is deployed, and a mobile station decreases or increases the transmission rate from one rate in the table to a lower or higher rate in the table, respectively, in response to the busy signal. Various other aspects are also presented.

  • Patent number: 7630719
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels.

  • Patent number: 7626922
Abstract: A method and apparatus for high data rate communication in a cellular/PCS communication system is provided. Specifically, the embodiment provides for early assignment of code channel for signaling channels (F-DCCH) in soft handoff. Thus, rather than simultaneously assigning a code channel for signaling data and another for traffic data for a particular Mobile Station (MS) in soft handoff, the code channel is assigned earlier for signaling data. Some of the unnecessary Base Station (BS) procedures with respect to the signaling data may be eliminated. An embodiment includes the concept of early signaling from the MS to request a code channel for signaling data, optionally followed by signaling (at a later time) from the MS to request a code channel for traffic data. This permits the MS to have the F-DCCH in soft handoff before having the F-DTCH (Forward Dedicated Traffic Channel) in soft handoff without requiring the BS to skip any of its procedures.
