    Abstract: A composite, carbon-carbon rotor or rotor hub (20) for use in power translating devices, such as in a turbine engine or in fluid pumps, includes a plurality of carbon-carbon laminate plies (P1-P25) layered to form the thickness of the rotor. The plies include alternating plies of cloth and spiral plies of fibrous material having different diameters to provide a desired variation in the cross-sectional configuration of the rotor. The individual spiral plies may vary in thickness from near the center to the outer edge and may be either tapered or formed to other contours. The cloth plies are positioned at predetermined orientations such that the strand axes are not aligned. These plies consist of fibrous carbon or graphite filament tape preimpregnated with a thermosetting polymer material, such as phenolic resin.

    Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a composition of matter is provided for forming a coating for protecting carbonaceous substrates from degradation at elevated temperatures. The composition of matter is a mixture of particulate silicon, silicon carbide and alumina. The mixture contains between about 40% and 50% silicon by weight of the total composition, between about 30% and 50% silicon carbide by weight of the total composition and between about 20% and 30% alumina by weight of the total composition. A method is provided for forming a primary protective coating on carbonaceous substrates utilizing the aforesaid mixture. An enhancement coating is provided for sealing the primary coating in applications where the substrate will be subjected to elevated temperatures and temperature cycling.

    Abstract: A lightweight, low energy neutron radiography inspection device (20) includes an inspection head (22) with a sealed tube neutron generator (44) using a deuterium target (110) for emitting relatively low energy neutrons. A moderating fluid (140) within the head is used to thermalize the neutrons emitted from the neutron source. A collimator (40) directs the thermalized neutrons to produce a thermal neutron radiograph. The relatively low energy neutrons produced by the neutron generator permit the reduction in volume of moderating fluid required and thus the use of a smaller, more maneuverable, inspection head.

    Abstract: A system and process for fluid jet cutting of a workpiece providing for self orientation of a catcher vessel. This invention comprises a cutting head adapted to be connected to the robot arm of a robotically controlled cutting system. A nozzle is mounted in the cutting head and adapted to dispense a jet cutting fluid stream along a cutting axis to be directed against a workpiece. The system further comprises a catcher assembly including a bracket supporting a catcher vessel having a receiving aperture. The catcher vessel contains a sacrificial material for dissipation of kinetic energy of the spent jet cutting stream. The supporting bracket includes an arm which depends from the cutting head along a traverse which is laterally offset from the cutting axis.

    Abstract: A pre-cast dome-like shell is loaded with a predetermined amount of curable sealant. The sealant and dome are similar in composition. The dome is pressed over the exposed end of a fastener. An elastic portion of the shell can expand, thereby increasing the internal volume of the shell to accommodate small variations in sealant amount. A close fit between the shell and fastener, combined with an adequate shell wall, insure proper shell orientation and barrier thickness.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for converting a digital TACAN output into an analog potentiometer input suitable for an analog navigation computer. The apparatus includes an input register for temporarily storing a digital TACAN output signal. A nines complement generation circuit is utilized to generate the nines complement of the digital TACAN output signal and the nines complement is temporarily stored in a second register. The data in each register is then utilized to control one of two identical resistive circuits which are coupled to a common output node so that the total resistance in both circuits is always equal to a selected total resistance. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of optically coupled solid state relays are utilized to control the resistive circuits.

    Abstract: A tactile sensing tool positioning system for positioning a tool normal to the surface of a curved workpiece is disclosed. The tool positioning system of the present invention includes a steel frame for rigidly supporting a cutting tool having a longitudinal cutting implement, such as a drill bit or countersink bit. The steel frame includes a steel collar which is normal to the axis of the cutting implement and which supports a deformable ring of polyurethane or other resilient material. A plurality of aluminum cylinder positioning sensors are imbedded into the steel collar and surrounded by the deformable ring with one end of each aluminum cylinder positioning sensor contiguous with the exposed surface of the deformable ring. The axial loading experienced by each aluminum cylinder positioning sensor is measured by an associated strain gauge, and a quadrature circuit is then utilized to balance the forces on the aluminum cylinder positioning sensors and normalize the longitudinal cutting implement.

    Abstract: A riveting apparatus includes a body pivotable about a horizontal axis and having first and second arms extending therefrom. Riveting structure is provided on the arms for cooperating to install and fasten rivets through a workpiece positioned between the riveting structure. The body may be rotated between a substantially horizontal to a substantially vertical position to accommodate riveting a workpiece having varying contours. The apparatus allows riveting operations to be performed at any point on the workpiece while permitting the operator to position himself immediately adjacent the point of riveting to assure proper alignment of the workpiece and proper riveting thereof.

    Abstract: An automated tool positining system is disclosed. The system includes a plurality of work stations, each having a set of guide rails disposed along the length thereof. A single control device is provided and includes a set of guide rails adapted to be temporarily aligned with the guide rails of each work station. The control device is thus movable from work station to work station and operates with a novel tool support member which may be selectively positioned along any guide rail to support a cutting tool at a selected position on a particular work station. The tool support member includes arcuate bearing surfaces which permit the cutting tool to be rotated through a conical section having its vertex at the cutting point of the tool in reponse to the output of a workpiece surface detection circuit. In this manner, the cutting tool may be automatically and accurately positioned normal to the contoured surface of the workpiece.

    Abstract: A mechanism for raising, rotating and lowering a workpiece from a first secured position to a second secured position with only a rotational input, wherein work operations may be performed on said workpiece in the first and second secured positions, includes dual cam followers extending from the first end of the workpiece for engaging dual camming races to allow the workpiece to first be raised, then rotated and then lowered to a second position. A ball bushing is mounted on the opposite end of the workpiece and pivots in a bushing support to permit the workpiece to rotate about its elongate axis. In an alternative embodiment, two sets of cam followers are provided, one set being mounted at the first end of the workpiece and other set mounted at the opposite end. Both sets of cam followers engage separate dual camming races to rotate the workpiece from a first secured position to a second secured position while remaining in a horizontal position.

    Abstract: Novel carbon-carbon laminate composite materials capable of significantly increased strengths in at least one predetermined direction of load are disclosed. The composites can comprise plies of resin impregnated woven carbon or graphite cloth material in combination with resin impregnated carbon or graphite filament unidirectional tape or can be fabricated from the unidirectional tape alone. Generally the unidirectional reinforcement of the tape plies provides higher strengths and moduli in specific directions which can be controlled during lay up of parts. The processes for obtaining the beneficial increase strength of unidirectional tape ply materials while avoiding fabrication problems resulting therefrom are also disclosed.

In one embodiment, the rotor structure is rotationally driven by an external power plant for pumping fluids through a tangentially oriented outlet duct. In a second embodiment, the apparatus is driven by fluid under pressure which is conducted toward the rotor structure through an inlet aligned with peripheral portions of the rotor members, for rotationally driving the rotor structure. A variable geometry inlet control system is provided for controlling fluid flow in response to varying flow conditions and for directioning fluid flow to a portion of the rotor structure. The apparatus incorporates a structural configuration which permits its construction of carbonized composite materials, for operation at elevated temperatures.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly erasing and rebiasing a thermoptic thin film. A thermal insulating material (16) is disposed adjacent a thermoptic thin film (10). A layer of resistive material (14) is disposed between the insulating material and the thermoptic thin film and is connected to a current generator (18) which supplies a current to the layer dissipating heat into the thermoptic thin film and insulating layer. A thermal body (22), having high thermal conductivity and interfacing with the insulating layer the opposite boundary from the thermoptic thin film, contains a conduit through which a refrigerated liquid is flowed to establish a thermal gradient from the thermoptic thin film to the fluid. Sufficient current is supplied to the resistive layer to maintain the temperature of the thermoptic thin film at the bias temperature.

    Abstract: An erasable optical read/write data storage system is disclosed. The data storage system utilizes a temperature sensitive data storage disk which includes an optical tuning film and a film of thermochromic phase change material which will change from a first phase to a second phase at temperatures in excess of an upper temperature and back to the first phase at temperatures below a lower temperature. An environmentally controlled chamber is provided to maintain the data storage disk at a selected bias temperature between the lower and upper temperatures to ensure that no unintentional phase change will occur. A thermally controlled support member is utilized to temporarily lower the temperature of the disk to a point below the lower temperature, thereby initializing the disk. A modulated laser beam is then focused on the disk to temporarily heat particular portions of the disk to a temperature in excess of the upper temperature, causing a phase change.
