  • Patent number: 5714743
Abstract: A card includes a magnetic track portion on which value information representing a prepaid amount and one of serial number data consecutively assigned in an issuance order are magnetically recorded, and a serial number printing portion in which a number representing the serial number data is marked with a laser beam. A card issuing apparatus includes a recording/reproducing unit and a laser marking unit. The recording/reproducing unit magnetically records value information representing a prepaid amount and one of serial number data consecutively assigned in an issuance order in a first area of the card, and reads out the serial number data magnetically recorded in the first area. The laser marking unit marks a number represented by the serial number data read out by the recording/reproducing unit in a second area of the card with a laser beam.

  • Patent number: 5712498
Abstract: A charge modulation device having a semiconductor region of a first conductivity type. An epitaxial layer of second conductivity type is provided on a portion of the semiconductor region so as to define an FET channel region. A first epitaxial region of the second conductivity type is provided adjacent to and in contact with the epitaxial layer so as to define an FET drain region, the first epitaxial region being electrically isolated from the semiconductor region. A second epitaxial region of the second conductivity type is provided adjacent to and in contact with the epitaxial layer so as to define an FET source region, the second epitaxial region being electrically isolated from the semiconductor region. A third epitaxial region of the first conductivity type or a metal oxide semiconductor is provided to the channel region between the source and drain regions.

  • Patent number: 5703084
Abstract: This invention disclosed (2S,3R)-3(6-aminopurin-9-yl) aralkan-2-ols, a novel class of adenine derivatives (also called 9-aralkyladenines, ARADS), which have been shown to inhibit the enzyme adenosine deaminase at therapeutically useful levels. The relevant inhibitory constant (K.sub.i) values are in the range of 10.sup.-7 -10.sup.-10 M. These compounds with potencies in this range can reversibly inhibit ADA in an effective manner, without permanently deactivating the enzyme. ADA inhibitors that have similar biological profiles have been shown to be of therapeutic value when used to protect heart muscle against ischemic damage.

  • Patent number: 5701619
Abstract: Stretcher consisting of a piece of material (1), said material being a semi-rigid material such as cellular plastics and having recesses (10, 11) forming handgrips for being carried. Longitudinal channels (4) extend on both sides of a middle part of the material piece (1), said channels being arranged to house stiffening elements (15, 16) having a flat cross-section with substantially larger width than thickness. The width of the middle part between the channels corresponds to the width of a body plus two times half the body thickness of persons to which the stretcher is adapted, so that when the material piece is folded around a person, the channels (4) will be located on the sides of the body. The material layers (1, 5) which delimit the channels will then be located substantially vertically when the stretcher is carried by the handgrips so that the stiffening elements are maintained held with their sections on edge when the arrangement is used for transport.

  • Patent number: 5692841
Abstract: An improved sleeve bearing and associated lubrication system for the rotor shaft of a steam turbine. The bearing is lined with a metallic-polymeric composite, and is fixedly supported within a housing defining a reservoir containing a supply of liquid lubricant. The lubrication system includes a ring loosely surrounding the rotor shaft at a location spaced axially from the bearing. A lower portion of the ring is partially submerged in the lubricant. The ring is rotatably driven in response to rotation of the rotor shaft, with lubricant picked up on the ring being centrifugally discharged radially outwardly onto the surrounding housing walls. A system of communicating troughs, scuppers and passageways receives lubricant running off the housing walls for delivery under gravity to the bearing. Return passageways direct lubricant exiting from the bearing past water cooled chambers, over a weir and back to the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 5692090
Abstract: An end connector for fiber optic transport cables. A cable clamp received within a passageway of a housing which receives the cable is provided to hold the cable in a secured position so as to resist rotational and longitudinal forces applied to the cable. Support coupling units are provided both internal and external the equipment which the cable is to be connected to. The coupling units allow the end connector to be coupled to and decoupled from the equipment without unnecessary rotation of the end connector and cable and without having to remove the cable from the end connector. Grounding components are provided for grounding conductive members associated with the cable so as to prevent damage due to voltage surges and to prevent RF signal leakage.

  • Patent number: 5681160
Abstract: A flare tip structure has a tubular component usually mounted at the top of a flare sack which emits waste gas into the atmosphere for disposal by combustion with the aid of one or more pilot burners. Several fluid injectors are mounted inside the component and emit cones of injection fluid, such as natural around the axis of the tubular component. A deflector assists the injectors in creating a cushion of fluid just above the opening of the tubular component to space the combustion flame away from the opening. This allows surrounding air to flow into the gap between the opening and the combustion flame and to mix with waste gas prior to combustion to suppress smoke.
