    Abstract: High magnification and large depth of field with a temporal resolution of less than 100 microseconds are possible using the present invention which combines a linear electron beam produced by a tungsten filament from an SX-40A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), a magnetic deflection coil with lower inductance resulting from reducing the number of turns of the saddle-coil wires, while increasing the diameter of the wires, a fast scintillator, photomultiplier tube, photomultiplier tube base, and signal amplifiers and a high speed data acquisition system which allows for a scan rate of 381 frames per second and 256.times.128 pixel density in the SEM image at a data acquisition rate of 25 MHz. The data acquisition and scan position are fully coordinated. A digitizer and a digital waveform generator which generates the sweep signals to the scan coils run off the same clock to acquire the signal in real-time.

A source of multiple-wavelength electromagnetic radiation is passed through a first interferometer modulated at a first frequency, the output thereof being directed into a sample to be investigated.     Abstract: Apparatus and method for locally generating hyperthermia-induced coagulation necrosis in tissue masses located deeply within the body of a subject. High energy laser radiation is introduced into the target tissue mass using an optical fiber inserted into a metallic cannula through which a suitable fluid is coaxially flowed. A combination of the fluid flow and the slow withdrawal of the cannula/fiber combination during therapy protects the optical fiber tip, thereby preserving its energy transmission characteristics. After establishment of a small fluid bolus in front of the fiber tip, fluid flow which is approximately proportionate to the laser energy employed has been found to be most effective in this regard.

    Abstract: Apparatus for nuclear transmutation and power production using an intense accelerator-generated thermal neutron flux. High thermal neutron fluxes generated from the action of a high power proton accelerator on a spallation target allows the efficient burn-up of higher actinide nuclear waste by a two-step process. Additionally, rapid burn-up of fission product waste for nuclides having small thermal neutron cross sections, and the practicality of small material inventories while achieving significant throughput derive from employment of such high fluxes. Several nuclear technology problems are addressed including 1. nuclear energy production without a waste stream requiring storage on a geological timescale, 2. the burn-up of defense and commercial nuclear waste, and 3. the production of defense nuclear material. The apparatus includes an accelerator, a target for neutron production surrounded by a blanket region for transmutation, a turbine for electric power production, and a chemical processing facility.

    Abstract: Apparatus having reduced background for measuring radiation activity in aerosol particles. A continuous air monitoring sampler is described for use in detecting the presence of alpha-emitting aerosol particles. An inlet fractionating screen has been demonstrated to remove about 95% of freshly formed radon progeny from the aerosol sample, and approximately 33% of partially aged progeny. Addition of an electrical condenser and a modified dichotomous virtual impactor are expected to produce considerable improvement in these numbers, the goal being to enrich the transuranic (TRU) fraction of the aerosols. This offers the possibility of improving the signal-to-noise ratio for the detected alpha-particle energy spectrum in the region of interest for detecting TRU materials associated with aerosols, thereby enhancing the performance of background-compensation algorithms for improving the quality of alarm signals intended to warn personnel of potentially harmful quantities of TRU materials in the ambient air.

    Abstract: The use of plant suspension cultures to remove ionic metallic species and TNT-based explosives and their oxidation products from aqueous solution is described. Several plant strains were investigated including D. innoxia, Citrus citrus, and Black Mexican Sweet Corn. All showed significant ability to remove metal ions. Ions removed to sub-ppm levels include barium, iron, and plutonium. D. innoxia cells growing in media containing weapons effluent contaminated with Ba.sup.2+ also remove TNT, other explosives and oxidation products thereof from solution. The use of dead, dehydrated cells were also found to be of use in treating waste directly.

    Abstract: Multiple discharge gas laser apparatus. A compact apparatus for simultaneously or individually generating a plurality of laser output beams in a selected pattern suitable for marking objects, for communications, or for remote chemical sensing or other remote sensing applications, among other uses, where all of the electrodes providing lasing gas excitation are located in a single gas volume and share a single output coupler is described. In this manner, all of the output beams are parallel in far field, to the extent variations in mode structure permit, without the necessity of undertaking detailed optical adjustments. Moreover, the focal plane of the output laser radiation is insensitive to significant positional variation of focusing optics utilized to increase the intensity thereof for marking purposes. In three separate mirror designs employing an alternating molybdenum and silicon layered, mirrored structure overlaid by two layers of a molybdenum/silicon pair anti-reflection coating, reflectivities of near normal incidence 133, 171, and 186 .ANG. wavelengths have been optimized, while that at 304 .ANG. has been minimized. The optimization process involves the choice of materials, the composition of the layer/pairs as well as the number thereof, and the distance therebetween for the mirror, and the simultaneous choice of materials, the composition of the layer/pairs, and their number and distance for the "wavetrap.

    Abstract: A positive displacement apparatus for efficiently exchanging heat between a fluid and a heat exchanger. A moving comb-shaped blade is used to stir the fluid through a heat exchanger having fins located internally thereto adapted to receive the blade and to intermesh with the tines which are part of the blade in such a manner that the blade can pass through the heat exchanger while the amount of fluid backflow behind the blade in the direction opposite to the direction of movement thereof is kept low when compared to that driven by the blade. The blade simultaneously pulls the fluid behind it through the heat exchanger. The efficiency of the apparatus is related to the amount of fluid leaking past the blade while it is traversing the heat exchanger.

    Abstract: Preparation of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) from 3,5-dichloroanisole. Nitration of 3,5-dichloroanisole under relatively mild conditions gave 3,5-dichloro-2,4,6-trinitroanisole in high yield and purity. Ammonolysis of this latter compound gave the desired TATB. Another route to TATB was through the treatment of the 3,5-dichloro-2,4,6-trinitroanisole with thionyl chloride and dimethylformamide to yield 1,3,5-trichloro-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene. Ammonolysis of this product produced TATB.
