  • Patent number: 8130727
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate increasing throughput in a time-division duplexed CDMA wireless communication environment. A set of orthogonal Walsh code sequences can be assigned to a first group of users in a network sector, and a duplicate set of orthogonal Walsh code sequences can be assigned to at least a second group of users in the sector. A number of receive antennas equal or greater than to the number of duplicate code sets being assigned can be deployed to linearly scale sector capacity to meet user demand. Additionally, user devices employing duplicate Walsh code sequence assignments at a base station serving the sector can be distinguished from each other, and timing offsets between such users can be enforced to mitigate any jamming effect at the base station receiver.

  • Patent number: 8085831
Abstract: Inter-sector interference for a target user in a sector may be controlled by selectively blanking or attenuating transmit powers for interfering users in neighboring sectors whenever their transmissions collide. The sector provides the frequency hopping (FH) sequence or subband usage for the target user to the neighboring sectors. Each neighboring sector uses the target user's FH sequence to form a blanking pattern. Each neighboring sector then either blanks or reduces transmit power for each subband in its blanking pattern. Each user in each neighboring sector receives either (1) punctured symbols for subbands in the blanking pattern, if blanking is performed, or (2) lower energy symbols for these subbands, if attenuation is performed. In any case, the target user and each neighboring user may process their received symbols in the normal manner and do not need to be informed of the blanking/attenuation.

  • Patent number: 8068530
Abstract: Each base station transmits a TDM pilot 1 having multiple instances of a pilot-1 sequence generated with a PN1 sequence and a TDM pilot 2 having at least one instance of a pilot-2 sequence generated with a PN2 sequence. Each base station is assigned a specific PN2 sequence that uniquely identifies that base station. A terminal uses TDM pilot 1 to detect for the presence of a signal and uses TDM pilot 2 to identify base stations and obtain accurate timing. For signal detection, the terminal performs delayed correlation on received samples and determines whether a signal is present. If a signal is detected, the terminal performs direct correlation on the received samples with PN1 sequences for K1 different time offsets and identifies K2 strongest TDM pilot 1 instances. For time synchronization, the terminal performs direct correlation on the received samples with PN2 sequences to detect for TDM pilot 2.

  • Patent number: 8005420
Abstract: Techniques to seamlessly switch reception between multimedia programs are described. For “continued decoding”, a wireless device continues to receive, decode, decompress, and (optionally) display a current program, even after a new program has been selected, until overhead information needed to decode the new program is received. After receiving the overhead information, the wireless device decodes the new program but continues to decompress the current program. The wireless device decompresses the new program after decoding this program. For “early decoding”, the wireless device receives a user input and identifies a program with potential for user selection. The identified program may be the one highlighted by the user input or a program anticipated to be selected based on the user input. The wireless device initiates decoding of the identified program, prior to its selection, so that the program can be decompressed and displayed earlier if it is subsequently selected.

  • Patent number: 7907574
Abstract: A method for transmitting data in a code division multiple access (CDMA) communication network, consisting of allocating a common Walsh code to a group of transceivers, and allocating a respective, different long code to each transceiver in the group. The method further includes time-multiplexing transmission of the data to the transceivers in the group by applying the common Walsh code and the respective long code of each transceiver to data packets directed to the transceivers so as to form multiplexed data packets. The multiplexed data packets are transmitted in sequence over the network to the group of transceivers.

  • Patent number: 7898954
Abstract: To conserve power, a terminal operates in a “power save” mode in which the terminal is in a “doze” state when there is a low probability of receiving an incoming packet and in an “awake” state when an incoming packet is expected. In the doze state, the terminal powers down as much circuitry as possible. The terminal transitions between states based on an “ON” window. The window size and placement are determined based on statistics of packet arrival times. The terminal enters the awake state at the start of the ON window, turns on the receiver, and monitors for an incoming packet. The terminal turns off the receiver after receiving the packet, updates the statistics of the arrival times, and computes the window size and placement for the next incoming packet. The terminal may selectively enable or disable the power save mode based on jitter in the arrival times.

  • Patent number: 7839834
Abstract: A forward link (FL) RLP and a reverse link (RL) RLP that are different in design are used for data transmission on the forward and reverse links, respectively. The asymmetric RLP designs may be quantified by, e.g., different feedback mechanisms and/or different data transmission mechanisms used for these RLPs. The FL RLP may utilize a negative acknowledgment (NAK)-based feedback mechanism whereas the RL RLP may utilize an acknowledgment (ACK)-based feedback mechanism. The NAK-based FL RLP may transmit each RLP frame once in sequential order and retransmit RLP frames out of sequence when not received correctly. The ACK-based RL RLP may transmit RLP frames in sequential order, one frame at a time until the frame is received correctly or the maximum number of transmissions have been attempted. Timers with adaptive values computed based on actual traffic conditions may be used to facilitate data transmission by the NAK-based FL RLP.

  • Patent number: 7835460
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for use in a wireless communication system are disclosed for reducing channel estimation noise in a device such as a wireless transceiver. A disclosed apparatus includes a processor that determines a channel activity portion and a noise portion of a channel estimation. The processor also determines a threshold noise level based on channel estimate values in the noise portion of the channel estimation. The processor compares channel estimate energy values in the channel estimation to the threshold noise level and sets each of the channel estimate energy values being less than the threshold noise level to a predetermined value such as zero in order to reduce or eliminate the noise. Similar methods are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7773702
Abstract: A receiver in an OFDM communication system includes a power detector and a gain controller. The power detector detects for total received power of a received OFDM signal, e.g., by computing the power of the data samples from an ADC and averaging the power. The gain controller adjusts the gain of the receiver in discrete gain steps and in one direction, e.g., from the lowest gain state to the highest gain state, based on the detected total received power. The gain controller initializes the receiver to the lowest gain state. Thereafter, the gain controller detects for low total received power, e.g., by comparing the detected total received power against a predetermined threshold. The gain controller transitions to a higher gain state if low total received power is detected and maintains the current gain state otherwise.
