  • Patent number: 6836516
Abstract: A decoding method and apparatus include providing capability for decoding data symbols that were encoded in a transmitter by either a serial-concatenated code or turbo code in a parallel processing fashion. The receiver upon knowing the encoding method may reconfigure the selection of data symbols from a table to accommodate the appropriate decoding process. Initially a data symbol estimate for a number of data symbols of a plurality of data symbols Xi, Yi, and Wi are determined. The estimates of data symbols Xi, Yi, and Wi passing to a first and second decision nodes include estimates for the variables in one or more encoding equations. A new estimate for the data symbol Xi is determined based on the estimate determined at the initial step and the new estimate for each occurrence of the data symbol Xi at the first and second decision nodes.

  • Patent number: 6813284
Abstract: A method and system that enables multiplexing a plurality of data streams onto one data stream based on data stream priorities, available transport format combinations (TFCs), and transmission time interval (TTI) constraints of transport frames within the TFCs is disclosed. A subscriber unit has applications that produce separate data streams. Example applications include voice, signaling, E-mail and web applications. The data streams are combined by a multiplexer module into one data stream called the transport stream. The transport stream is sent over the reverse link to base station transceivers (BTS). The multiplexer module multiplexes the data streams onto a single stream according to available TFCs, TTI constraints, and data stream priorities.

  • Patent number: 6807426
Abstract: Method and apparatus for a generalized scheduler for scheduling transmissions in a communications system. The scheduler is defined by a priority function of the channel condition and fairness criteria. The generalized scheduler is adapted to apply a variety of combinations of channel condition metrics and user fairness metrics. The scheduler distinguishes among classes of users, allowing individual processing per class. In one embodiment, a system controller receives a Delivery Priority Parameter (DPP) for each of a plurality of users, and maps each DPP to a corresponding common Mapped Priority Parameter (MPP). An operating point is determined and a corresponding MPP value for each of the users is applied to schedule transmissions.

  • Patent number: 6807428
Abstract: Method for segmented message transmission wherein each message is first divided into segments and the segments are fragmented. A segment parameter is applied to each segment, and a segment identifier to each fragment. The fragments are provided to a lower level for preparation into frames for transmission. One embodiment is applied to the transmission of short duration messages, such as control messages. On receipt of a frame within a segment, a timer is initiated having an expiration period. Receipt of a next frame in the segment stops the timer. Expiration of the expiration period for a timer indicates that a next sequential frame is lost.

  • Patent number: 6804210
Abstract: Reverse link busy bits are independently generated by each base station and indicate whether a base station has reached a reverse link capacity limit. A remote station combines multipath components of the reverse link busy bits in its Active Set and in response transmits a reverse link signal only when all of the reverse link busy bits indicate that the base stations in the Active Set have reverse link capacity. In an embodiment, the remote station weights the reverse link busy signals in accordance with the signal strength of the transmitting base station and determines whether to transmit based on the weighted sum of the busy signals. In an embodiment, the remote station weights the reverse link busy signals in accordance with the signal strength of the transmitting base station and determines a maximum reverse link data rate based on the weighted sum of the busy signals.

  • Patent number: 6778507
Abstract: In a CDMA data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, utilization of beamforming techniques decreases the average interference caused by transmissions of a base station to subscriber stations in neighboring cells. Base stations utilize multiple transmit antennas, each transmitting signals at controlled phases, to form transmit signal beams corresponding to individual subscriber stations. Data and reference signals are transmitted along beams that change according to fixed time slots and sub-slots in order to maximize carrier-to-interference ratios (C/I) measured at subscriber stations.

  • Patent number: 6760313
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for adaptive data rate selection in a high data rate (HDR) communication system are disclosed. An exemplary HDR communication system defines a set of data rates, at which an access point (AP) may transmit data packets to an access terminal (AT). The transmission data rate is selected to maintain target packet error rate (PER). Each AT monitors signal quality metric of signals received from APs. An AT receiving forward link signals from multiple ATs identifies the AT associated with the highest quality forward link signal. The AT then evaluates the rate at which a tail probability of error is greater than or equal to a target tail probability of error. The AT then generates a prediction of a first data rate at which the PER of packets received from the identified AP will not exceed the target PER, and a prediction of a second data rate at which the PER of packets received from the selected AP will exceed the target PER.

  • Patent number: 6760587
Abstract: A method and apparatus for scheduling transmit rates and power levels for data in conjunction with a voice-data communication during conditions of soft and softer handoff. During conditions of no handoff, or hard handoff, an algorithm selects a slot reflecting a favored power level and transmission rate for transmitting the non-voice data on a supplemental channel. The slot is selected based upon the transmission power levels for voice-data transmitted by a base station to a remote station on a fundamental channel. The algorithm applies to softer handoff using information from all the sectors of a base station involved in the softer handoff. During soft handoff, instead of scheduling forward link transmission based on recent power and rate, or C/I information, data is continuously transmitted to the user at a power level based on average required power.

  • Patent number: 6747964
Abstract: In a wireless communication system a method for high data rate transmission aggregates information signals processed by at least two modems, wherein the modulated information signals are transmitted using two carrier frequencies. The method provides multiple data transmissions concurrently over a broad bandwidth consistent with single transmission air-interface standards. An apparatus, mobile unit, includes a multi-link (ML) protocol processor that aggregates the information signals from the modems into a point-to-point protocol (PPP) format for interface with conventional data-based systems, such as the internet.
