  • Patent number: 7783312
Abstract: Systems and methods for improving the performance of wireless telecommunications networks by reducing data communications between a mobile station and a base station. One embodiment of the invention is implemented in an IS2000 (cdma2000) network. This network communicates data from a base station to a mobile station over a supplemental forward channel. In order to maintain the best communication channel for data transmissions, the mobile station monitors the signals received from an active set of base stations and identifies the strongest signal of a reduced active set so that the corresponding base station can be selected for data communications. Upon the occurrence of conditions indicating that a new base station within the reduced active set should be selected, the mobile station provides a notification to the base stations in the reduced active set so that further data transmissions will be made by the newly selected base station.

  • Patent number: 7746831
Abstract: In a code division multiple access communication system (100), a method and accompanying apparatus provide for controlling gain of a forward supplemental channel (482) by determining gain level of a forward fundamental channel (481) associated with supplemental channel (482) for being targeted for a common mobile station, determining an adaptive margin (Ma) for fundamental channel (481) and determining a forward supplemental channel gain (Gsch) based on the gain of supplemental channel (482) and the Ma. The Gsch may be successively decreased for subsequent data frames targeted for the common mobile station on supplemental channel (482) by successively decreasing the Ma until receiving a supplemental channel frame erasure indicator from the common mobile station. The Gsch may be increased for a subsequent data frame targeted for the common mobile station on supplemental channel (482) by increasing the Ma after receiving the supplemental channel frame erasure indicator from the common mobile station.

  • Patent number: 7746832
Abstract: Techniques to support adaptive multi-rate (AMR) coded data in a cdma2000 communication system. A number of AMR modes are defined for speech information (of various rates), silence descriptor (SID) (of various types), and blank frame. The speech and SID data are provided in frames conforming to frame formats defined by the cdma2000 system. A CRC is used for each AMR frame (e.g., 12-bit CRC for speech and 8-bit CRC for SID). The AMR data and CRC bits are further coded with a convolutional encoder. Blind rate detection is used to detect the frame rate of the transmitted AMR frames. To support blind rate detection, the number of bits provided to the CRC generator is different for each blind rate to be detected. If two or more blind rates have the same number of bits (such as for SID), then format bits are provided to distinguish between these rates.

  • Patent number: 7684470
Abstract: In a remote unit of a wireless communication system, the speed of acquisition, or reacquisition, of a pilot signal by a search engine is increased. PN space is divided into segments and a coarse search of each segment is performed using a set of “fast” search parameters. A set of peak signal strengths, along with their corresponding PN offsets, is saved for each segment of PN space. Following the search of all segments of PN space, the peak signal strengths which were saved during the coarse acquisition are evaluated. Coarse acquisition search results are used by the remote unit to determine fine search window parameters for subsequent searches performed by the remote unit search engine. The fine search parameters concentrate searching efforts on portions of PN space most likely to contain a viable base station pilot signal.

  • Patent number: 6311044
Abstract: A method for determining failure modes of a transceiver (100) includes applying a control signal (121) to a transmitter (130) of transceiver (100). The power level of a transmit signal (131) is proportional to a predetermined voltage level of control signal (121), and is detected by a detector (132) which correspondingly produces a transmit power level indicator (133). A portion of transmit signal (131) is coupled to produce a coupled transmit signal (111) which is received by a receiver (110) of transceiver (100). Receiver (111) produces a receive signal strength indicator (112) corresponding to the power level of coupled transmit signal (111). Voltage levels of received signal strength indicator (112), transmit power level indicator (133) and predetermined voltage level of control signal (121) are stored in a memory means 125, and compared in a controller 126 to determine failure modes of receiver (110) and transmitter (130).
