  • Patent number: 7995684
Abstract: A receiver operates to AGC a multi-carrier signal through a corresponding number of inner loops and an outer loop AGC processes. A first number of bits for representing the multi-carrier signal with a limited amount of interference is determined through a calibration mode process. The first number of bits provides for quantization of the multi-carrier signal at an outer loop AGC to a maximum quantization level. After the received signal power estimate is reached a predetermined “ON” threshold, the outer loop AGC is operated at a second number of bits higher than the first number of bits to allow a quantization of possible interference in accordance with a difference of the first and second number of bits. The outer loop AGC switches back to use the first number of bits when the received signal power estimate falls below a predetermined “OFF” threshold.

  • Patent number: 7873163
Abstract: In a communication system (100), a method and apparatus provides for message integrity regardless of the operating version of an authentication center (198) or an interface (197) between the authentication center (198) and a mobile switching center (199). The method and apparatus include generating a cellular message encryption algorithm (CMEA) key, and generating a CMEA-key-derived integrity key (CIK) based on the CMEA key for message integrity between a mobile station and a base station. The mobile station transmits a registration message to the base station, and determines an operating version of the authentication center (198) in communication with the base station based on whether the mobile station receives a registration accepted order or some elements of an authentication vector from the base station. The CIK is generated based on the CMEA key, if the mobile station receives a valid registration accepted order from the base station.

  • Patent number: 7505780
Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling power in a wireless communication system having multiple reverse-link channels. One embodiment comprises adjusting power levels of a first set of channels and a corresponding pilot channel while maintaining a set traffic-to-pilot (T/P) ratio between them, and adjusting T/P ratios for one or more remaining channels independently of the power level of the pilot channel. A base station determines whether frames received on the first set of channels contain errors and sends messages to a mobile station to increment or decrement the power levels, respectively, if the frames do or do not contain errors. T/P ratios of the additional channels are adjusted by determining whether frames received on the additional channels contain errors, incrementing or decrementing the T/P ratios appropriately, and transmitting the T/P ratios to the mobile station, which controls the transmission parameters for the respective channels in accordance with the received T/P ratios.

  • Patent number: 7502420
Abstract: In a MIMO communication system (100) with limited power for each antenna, a method, apparatus and a processor (420) provide for determining bin energy level allocation to each OFDM frequency bin at each transmit antenna. An estimate of a solution vector including elements of the allocation bin energy level to each OFDM frequency bin at each antenna is determined. An error function based on the determined solution vector is also determined. An error magnitude is determined based on the determined error function. The error magnitude is compared to an error threshold. The processor (420) accepts the estimate of the solution vector with the elements of the allocation bin energy level when the error magnitude is less than the error threshold.

  • Patent number: 6366880
Abstract: A noise suppression system implemented in communication system provides an improved level of quality during severe signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. The noise suppression system, inter alia, incorporates a frequency domain comb-filtering (289) technique which supplements a traditional spectral noise suppression method. The invention includes a real cepstrum generator (285) for an input signal (285) G(k) to produce a likely voiced speech pitch lag component and converting a result to frequency domain to obtain a comb-filter function (290) C(k), applying input signal (291) G(k) to comb-filter function (290) C(k), and equalizing the energies of the corresponding pre and post filtered subbands, to produce a signal (293) G″(k) to be used for noise suppression. This prevents high frequency components from being unnecessarily attenuated, thereby reducing muffling effects of prior art comb-filters.

  • Patent number: 6347228
Abstract: Apparatus for determining the location of a subscriber unit (1) in a mobile telecommunications network, and particularly in a GSM cellular network, includes the provision of several receiver stations (4, 5, 6) positioned at separate known locations within each cell. Each of the receiver stations (4, 5, 6), which are synchronised by means of an on-board GPS receiver (10), measures the time of arrival of a message transmitted from the subscriber unit (1). The time of arrival measurements recorded by each receiver station (4, 5, 6) are then transmitted to a base transceiver station (2) for computation of the subscriber unit's location relative to the receiver stations. The apparatus can provide a reasonably accurate means for location with a low susceptibility to interference.

  • Patent number: 6321073
Abstract: An automatic gain control apparatus (106) and method for a radiotelephone receiver employs stored inverse transfer function data (400) of the radiotelephone receiver and a gain estimation circuit (200). The gain estimation circuit (200) estimates the input power of received signal (103) and determines a required gain based on a nonlinear portion of the inverse transfer function data (400) of the radiotelephone receiver to provide an improved dynamic range of the receiver. The apparatus and method performs convergence within one iteration to perform fast gain control. In addition, if desired, a DC offset compensation circuit, such as a feedforward DC offset compensation circuit (202), compensates the digital representation of the input signal for use by the gain estimation circuit (200).

  • Patent number: 6253063
Abstract: A mobile station (110) selects an initial data rate for communication between base station (107) and mobile station (110). Mobile station (110) communicates the selected initial data rate to base station (107) through uplink (112). Base station (107) determines a difference level of interference condition experienced by mobile station (107) between a time when the initial data rate was selected by mobile station (110) and a time when base station (107) prepares to communicate to mobile station (110). Base station (107) selects a final data rate for transmission from base station (107) to mobile station (110) based on the determined difference level of interference condition. As such, the initial data rate may be modified to the final data rate while maximizing the down link capacity.
