  • Patent number: 5413693
Abstract: An electrolytic method for providing bone-emulating, phosphate coatings on prosthetic appliances. Such coatings serve to enhance bone fixation after implantation of the appliances. The method of the invention is an electrolysis process wherein the appliance to be coated is immersed in a phosphate-containing electrolyte to serve as the cathode of the electrolysis process. When current is applied to the electrolysis cell, the electrolyte solution, which includes calcium ions and dihydrogen phosphate ions, is caused to rapidly increase in (localized) pH proximate the cathode element. The localized pH increase creates a supersaturated local condition causing less soluble calcium phosphate salts to crystallize out of the electrolyte solution and adhere to the cathode, thus effecting thereon a coating of brushite.

  • Patent number: 5393190
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for engaging, raising and rotating tanks/cylinders which contain liquids or gases under pressure. The apparatus comprises a cradle rotationally mounted on an elevator housing. While the tank/cylinder is elevated, an auto turn linkage in one embodiment of the apparatus assists in turning the cradle assembly by engagement with an indexing mechanism. Once the tank has been rotated 90 degrees, the indexing mechanism is locked in place, the auto turn linkage is released, and evacuation plumbing is affixed to the tank. The tank is then manually inverted for evacuation of the liquid.

  • Patent number: 5383675
Abstract: A human powered mechanism for propelling a wheeled land vehicle, a water vehicle (a boat or hydroplane) using either a water screw or a jet of water or an ultra-light aircraft with an air screw. The mechanism can utilize either arm or leg muscles or preferably, both arms and legs extending and retracting in a manner similar to walking or running as performed from a semi-recumbent position. Steering or other critical control is accomplished through another mechanism which is guided by the appropriate movement of the operator's head. The operators feet are placed on pedals which are attached to swinging members which pivot in a bearing at the upper end. The operator's hands grasp leverage arms which are cantilevered, the distal ends of which are attached to the same push-pull connecting rods as the above mentioned swinging members with foot pedals attached.

  • Patent number: 5377415
Abstract: An improved sheet metal punch including a second class lever system compounded with a hybrid first-third class lever system. A nutcracker-like tool employs two lever arms that are linked at the ends thereof by a fulcrum link and opposing fulcrum points, one on each of the lever arms, to actuate a hybrid first-third class lever system to drive a floating punch into a guide-stripper plate and die matrix assembly that are rigidly fixed to one of the levers. The punch assembly consists in a plate having a plurality of easily removable/replacable cylindrical tools projecting therefrom and which are used in combination with the die matrix to perforate sheet materials such as sheet metal, fiberglass and other relatively thin, planar substances.

  • Patent number: 5376039
Abstract: A motor-driven, rope-jumping doll. The doll features a conventional toy that closely imitates rope-jumping by a human. A battery powered motor is activated and deactivated by lightly pressing on top of the doll's head. Once in motion, the doll appears to swirl the rope overhead and underfoot while effecting a jump each time the rope passes its zenith and nadir. The "timing" jump and the rope-skipping jump, combined with a true swirling motion applied to the rope by principally the "elbows" and "wrists" of the toy sincerely emulate one rope-jumping technique used by human beings. An eccentric, asymmetrically spiraled cam and a biasing spring are used to effect the two-jump characteristic by shuttling a discrete internal mass between a first and a second position, twice for each rotation of the cam.

  • Patent number: 5374351
Abstract: A filter backflushing system including either a pneumatically-driven piston or pneumatic accumulator for propelling a supply of a filtered backflushing fluid, contained in a backflushing fluid chamber, in a reverse direction through a filter element. The filter backflushing system provides a high intensity, substantially instantaneous, constant pressure backflushing flow which effectively removes clogging contaminants from the filter element.

  • Patent number: 5368753
Abstract: The invention is an antifreeze reclamation system that is designed for low volume processing over extended time periods. The system makes use of a tank that is preferably fabricated from a standard fifty-five gallon drum. Attached to the top of one end of the tank is a standpipe used for inputting used antifreeze into the system. A second standpipe is located at the top of the opposite end of the tank. The system functions by allowing gravity, buoyancy and time to separate the used antifreeze from entrained and dissolved impurities. The outputted liquid is mixed with new materials to restore it to its original, unused condition.

  • Patent number: 5368292
Abstract: A basketball rebounding system for capturing a basketball which has been shot in the general direction of a basketball hoop, and for subsequently returning the basketball to the shooter, regardless of the successful completion of a basket. The basketball rebounding system generally includes a slotted basketball capturing structure for substantially enclosing the front, sides and bottom of a conventional basketball hoop and backboard arrangement, and a return mechanism for returning a captured basketball to the shooter thereof substantially along the original flight path of the basketball.

  • Patent number: 5353975
Abstract: The invention is a multi-compartmented belt-type carrier for a portable stereo unit having separate speakers. Each compartment is designed to receive a speaker and has a front face that includes at least one foraminous area that functions to allow a virtually non-obstructed transmission of sound from a housed speaker to the ambient environment. The carrier includes a movable cover member that is adapted to overlie the compartments. In addition, a flexible base is used to support the compartments, thereby allowing relative movement between the compartments and enhancing the fit of the device to the wearer.

  • Patent number: 5350342
Abstract: The invention is a semi-resilient exercise grip that has a non-resilient particulate core surrounded by a resilient rubber covering. Within the core there is also a dry lubricant such as talc that allows the particles to move over each other without damage. The outer covering may consist of a single thick latex layer, a thin latex layer surrounded by a thick rubber layer or a number of thin latex layers. The semi-resiliency of the grip enables a user to deform the grip and thereby change its shape. The grip can be moved within the hand to allow the user to deform it repeatedly while changing the grip's shape each time.
