Abstract: An externally screw threaded member of the self-locking, prevailing torque type has a series of convolutions of a standard thread form, and a locking series of convolutions of the same thread pitch as the standard series but of wider section and with incomplete thread crests. When the member is mated with an internal thread of standard form complementary to the standard series, the locking series of convolutions have an interference fit with the internal thread. In consequence of the interference fit one or both flank portions of each convolution of the locking series are caused to be swaged to some extent towards the crest region.
Abstract: A sealing arrangement between a transit capsule and a sub-sea capsule comprises a member(secured and sealed to the sub-sea capsule)which seals to the transit capsule but can be disengaged from the sub-sea capsule and carried by the transit capsule to the surface for repair of the seal between the member and the transit capsule. Means are described to ensure that the seal between the member and the sub-sea capsule is reliable.
Abstract: In an exhaust system for an internal combustion engine incorporating a housing enclosing a ceramic block coated with catalytic material for removing noxious matters from the exhaust gases, the housing is formed from two or more drawn or pressed stainless steel members which are assembled around the block and welded together while axially directed pressure is applied to the members to compress the block axially with a pressure which is maintained on the block in the completed unit.
Abstract: An abutment assembly for an internal shoe drum brake, particularly a vehicle wheel brake, comprising opposed abutment members for engagement with respective brake shoes and an arrangement for transmitting forces between the abutment members. The arrangement comprises a deformable member contained within a recess in one abutment member and sandwiched between the abutment member and a piston in force transmitting relation with the other abutment member. The deformable member has different areas of engagement with the piston and the one abutment member so that only a part of the thrust applied to one abutment member is transmitted to the other abutment member.
