  • Patent number: 4421259
Abstract: A method and apparatus (12) for handling hosiery is disclosed. A generally flat form (14) dimensioned to be inserted into hosiery is supported for motion on a conveyor chain (18). The form (14) is driven by a loading station (34) where hosiery is placed upon the form (14). A clamp mechanism (46) is carried on the form (14) for vertical motion along its length. The form (14) is thereafter moved past an elevator mechanism (16). The elevator mechanism (16) moves the clamp mechanism (46) upward until it contacts a bottom portion of the hosiery on the form and moves the bottom portion of the hosiery upward. Clamp jaws (52) of the clamp mechanism (46) thereafter clamp down on the hosiery placed on the form (14). After the jaws (52) have been clamped on the hosiery, the clamp mechanism (46) is forced downwardly by a cam plate (202).

  • Patent number: 4421149
Abstract: A process is disclosed for making long wood strands. Long wood strands are required in structural lumber products and in order to obtain maximum strength should be split along the grain. A method of splitting a log into longitudinal-grain wood strands is disclosed comprising the steps of radially splitting the log substantially along the grain of the log into a plurality of sector shaped segments, said radial splitting including pushing the log axially through at least one sector splitter ring, and further splitting the sector shaped segments substantially along the grain of the segments, said further splitting including feeding each of the sector shaped segments through two rows of intermeshing counter rotating discs, pulling each of the segments between the rows of discs and simultaneously splitting each of the segments into a plurality of longitudinal-grain wood strands.

  • Patent number: 4413555
Abstract: A press has a framework (1) which supports a pressure plate (3). The pressure plate is attached to a fluid operated ram assembly (4) by means of gimbals (20) so that the pressure plate (3) may adopt different angular attitudes relative to the load being compressed. In order to prevent the ram assembly (4) being subjected to stress the ram assembly (4) is mounted on the framework (1) by means of gimbals (18). The freedom of movement of the pressure plate (3) laterally is restrained by opposed pins (26) which engage loosely in slots (27) on the frame and stops (28) on the opposed pins. • Patent number: 4408280
Abstract: The system is applied to a lathe and allows control of the machine to be adapted in such manner as to make use of the maximum power of the spindle motor with the maximum feed of the tool and the minimum cutting speed. The feed rate and the cutting speed are defined by the programmer only as the permitted region within which these parameters must jointly lie. The control unit tends constantly to command the feed rate and the spindle motor in such manner as to be within this region. Then the control unit compares the power consumed by the spindle motor, which is detected by a circuit through the armature current, with the maximum power of the motor for the actual working conditions and tends to cause the feed rate and the number of revolutions to be adapted in such manner as to make use of this maximum power. The system is adapted to exclude adaptation during cutting-in-air operation.
