Abstract: A system for the manufacture of synthetic hydrocarbon products from coal or similar carbonaceous solids is described. This coal liquefaction system includes means for reducing the pressure of high pressure and temperature liquid reaction product streams without attendant corrosion of the metal parts in the pressure reducing unit. The pressure reducing means comprises at least one elongated tube defining relatively narrow fluid flow passage, the reduction in pressure being effected substantially entirely by friction of the fluid within the tube.

Abstract: In a serial printer of the type having a carriage continuously moved along a printing line and supporting a type-member intermittently rotated for selecting the next character being printed, a control unit is provided which performs an algorithm for executing a forecast calculation of the residual time missing in every moment to the type-member for positioning the character being printed. The same control unit calculates a correspondent speed of the carriage depending on that residual time and on the position reached by the carriage on the printing line. The speed of the carriage is thereby continuously controlled from the preceding to the new printing position for causing the printing of the selected character exactly on the printing position at the maximum speed of the carriage consistent with a good print operation.
Abstract: An electronic typewriter having a display device which shows just the last entered characters of a printing line. The typewriter comprises a selector for an immediate typing mode of the entered character, a line/line mode in which each line is set up in memory and typed on operating a service key, and a word/word mode in which the set up words are typed word by word, i.e. on each operation of the space bar. This facilitates typing with checking to eliminate all errors. The display device shows emphasized characters, different kinds of emphasis (heavy type, light type on dark background being indicated by different luminous dot patterns under the characters. The display device is of the dot matrix type and, by suitable circuits thereto superposed characters, e.g. 0 and 1 yielding .phi., are correctly shown.
Abstract: A water-base well drilling, workover or completion fluid containing a fluid loss control agent prepared by pre-reacting sulfonated phenol with formaldehyde under alkaline conditions and then reacting the mixture with phenol under controlled conditions is described.
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling toner concentration utilizing a hollow body upon which a detecting coil is wound. The hollow body responses to the inductance of the developer passing through. The apparatus further comprises: a first digital oscillator with the frequency thereof being variable according to changes in the inductance, a second digital oscillator producing a reference signal at predetermined frequency, and a first and second digital frequency dividers for dividing the outputs of the first and second oscillators, respectively. The fist and second dividers are cleared by the divided output of the other divider. A toner supply mechanism is energized when the first frequency divider is cleared and is de-energized when the second frequency divider is cleared.
Abstract: A water-based drilling fluid composition is described which comprises an aqueous dispersion of a clay material containing, in the presence of a phosphate or a particular metal or both, an effective dispersing amount of a lignosulfonate modified by graft polymerization with acrylic acid.
Abstract: In an electrostatic copying machine, a charging apparatus for a photoconductive member includes a thermally responsive device for automatically adjusting the distance between the corona charger and the photoconductive member in response to temperature changes in the photoconductive member. Therefore, the charge accepted by the photoconductive member is maintained at a substantially uniform level despite the temperature variations of the photoconductive member.
Abstract: Characters are typed in reverse, i.e. light characters on a dark background by first typing all over the field of the character using an ink ribbon, back spacing and typing the character using a correcting ribbon. The first typing may be effected with a solid character covering the whole field in one or a few operations but, in the preferred embodiment is effected by repeatedly typing a vertical bar with tiny line feed increments, say 1/120". The first typing may take place on depression of a special key, which also effects the back spacing and the correcting ribbon; the character key is then struck. Preferably the whole sequence takes place automatically upon depression of the character key while a mode selector is in REVERSE mode.
Abstract: An electronic digital readout diet scale for measuring and displaying weight information. A microcomputer is used to enable a dieter to enter a diet program having an objective weight and a given time interval. The scale will indicate the amount of weight to be lost or gained in order to achieve the objective weight as well as the deviation between the current weight and the projected weight according to the diet program.
Abstract: The process comprises placing on the journal the roller provided with its needles and the annular member for axially retaining the needles. Thereafter, one end of an elastically yieldable ring is engaged in a passageway provided on the journal and the ring is shifted along this passageway until it is completely received in a groove. This method is much more reliable and lends itself to a thorough automatization.
Abstract: An apparatus for recording binary information on a flexible magnetic disk of small dimension, comprises a rotatable hub connected to a plate on a first surface of which is formed a spiral guide. The hub has a cylindrical portion engageable accurately with a corresponding central hole of the disk and it is provided with a radial driving dog engageable on the fly, and with play, with a corresponding radial notch opening out of the central hole. A recording head is mounted at the end of an arm which has an element cooperating with the spiral guide of the plate for being moved, radially with respect to the disk, in synchronism with the rotation of the plate and of the same disk.
Abstract: A simple and versatile exercising apparatus is provided which enables the user to perform a wide variety of weight training exercises. The apparatus includes a basic bench with barbell cradle, a rope and pulley weight pull device, a lat bar device with squat rack and chinning bar, and readily attachable devices for performing curling, sit-ups and leg lifts.
Abstract: A digital device generates a local frequency and phase signal adapted for the conversion of one of a plurality of codified signals into binary code. The received codified signals are continuously stored in a shift register which is able to contain the signals received in a predetermined period at a time. The output of the shift-register addresses a memory. At predetermined instances of time the memory produces a control word which is input to a counter dependent on the phase of the received signals stored in the shift register. The counter activates output signals at predetermined instances of time in order to produce a local signal in synchronism with the received signal.
Abstract: A method for the production of a monolayer catalyst by treating the catalyst substrate having bound water residues on its surface and substantially free of physisorbed water with an organic solution of a catalyst precursor, reacting the precursor with the bound water residues, removing excess precursor and solvent and decomposing the precursor to a catalytically effective compound. The catalyst substrate preferably is titanium dioxide and the precursor preferably is vanadium oxychloride.
Abstract: In a color cathode ray tube having a glass envelope and panel, a shadow mask is positioned adjacent a phosphor screen in the panel. Supporting members secure the shadow mask to the panel. These supporting members are responsive to the heat generated in the shadow mask to compensate for the thermal expansion of the shadow mask by displacing the shadow mask toward the phosphor screen. The supporting members each comprise a pair of plate-like segments spaced apart along at least a portion of their lengths. The plate-like segments are formed of metals having different coefficients of thermal expansion. No bi-metallic elements are used to form the plate-like segments of the supporting members.

The lowermost edge of the lower arms of the deflecting members in one row are disposed between vertical projections from the uppermost edges of upper arms of deflecting members in a row below the last mentioned row.
Abstract: Methods of portioning by weight a plurality of articles of randomly varying weight. An array of articles is randomly assembled and then individual weights sensed. Some of these articles are then selected, to add up to the desired total weight. A preliminary step can be used wherein articles of unknown weight are first assembled to form a preliminary weight portion known to be short of the desired final weight, and then articles of known weight are added to reach the final target weight. An apparatus for accomplishing the methods comprises an array of scales dischargable upon signal from a control system, means for resupplying the scales, and a control system for sensing, storing and analyzing the weights of articles in the scales, and causing the proper scales to be discharged.
