  • Patent number: 4910716
Abstract: A method is disclosed to suppress coherent noise in seismic data. Based on the Karhunen-Loeve Transform, this method trains on a region containing undesired coherent noise. Eigenvectors determined from the convariance matrix of that noise are used to reconstruct the noise throughout the data set. Subtracting the reconstruction from the original data leaves a residual in which the coherent noise has been suppressed. Applying this method to a shot record of marine seismic data illustrates that the procedure does suppress noise on actual seismic data.

  • Patent number: 4905775
Abstract: To divert sufficient fluid flow through an unsealed bearing section of a downhole drilling motor, a flow control apparatus is provided for insertion between the power section of the motor and the bottom of a drill bit which is to be turned by the motor. The flow control apparatus includes a variable flow channel having a selectable effective cross-sectional area preferably embodied by a valve. A selected effective cross-sectional area is chosen by a control mechanism, such as a snap ring or a spring used to control the position of a valve member of the valve in response to different flow rates of fluid pumped through the valve depending upon whether the drill bit is on-bottom or off-bottom. In one embodiment the apparatus is incorporated within the interior of a drill bit which has angled flow channels to direct flushing fluid flow to side wall locations where reaming occurs. Flow through these outlets is controlled by positioning of the valve member.

  • Patent number: 4899833
Abstract: The orientation of a downhole steering assembly used in drilling a horizontal well is located with respect to the earth using a sub placed above the downhole assembly. The sub comprises a housing having a central bore defining an inlet flow passageway said housing further defining a toroidal chamber in communication with said passageway. The toroidal chamber has a pocket, a valve seat, and a spherical valve that is rotatable in said toroidal chamber from a normally seated position in the pocket. Upon rotation of the drill string the spherical valve plugs the valve seat and causes an increase in the resistance to flow in the drilling mud through the drill string that can be detected at the surface.

  • Patent number: 4887677
Abstract: A drill bit includes a drill bit body, a cutting member and a fluid course extending in front of the cutting member. The fluid course includes a progressively widening diffuser having a particular design which allows pressure recovery in a fluid flowed through an axial bore of the drill bit body, through a narrow throat of the fluid course in front of the cutting member, and out the progressively widening diffuser of the fluid course. As a result, a significantly reduced pressure is obtained in front of the cutting member, which reduced pressure is below a borehole pressure where the drill bit is used.

  • Patent number: 4881605
Abstract: To stabilize a drill string and to reduce or prevent wellbore deviation in directional drilling, weight rods by which weight is to be applied to drill bit are maintained free-standing and under compression within a drill string while the drill string itself is maintained in tension to limit or prevent lateral deviation of the weight rods in compression. Weight provided by the weight rods is transferred to the drill bit through a load transfer member in compression connected between the drill string and the drill bit.

  • Patent number: 4873636
Abstract: A method as disclosed of assisting in the determination of the existence of conical folding of the geological formation utilizing an existing dipmeter survey obtained through a wellbore penetrating the geological formation. Estimates of plunge and aperture of the geological formation, as well as the position of the wellbore with respect to the geologic formation are made. These estimates are utilized to generate a synthetic dip plot representative of conical folding. The synthetic dip plot is compared to the existing dipmeter survey, and one or more of the estimates are varied to obtain a final synthetic dip plot that has the highest correlation of the dipmeter survey, thereby providing an assistance in the determination of existence of conical folding of the geological formation.

  • Patent number: 4871037
Abstract: An excavating system, such as for drilling an oil or gas well, includes a source of high pressure fluid and a drillstring through which the fluid is conducted to an excavating apparatus connected to the bottom of the drillstring. The excavating apparatus includes a drill bit having mechanical cutting elements for mechanically boring into an earthen formation. The excavating apparatus also includes a nozzle rotatably mounted to the body of the drill bit so that the nozzle is rotatable about an axis of rotation different from the axis of rotation of the drill bit. As the drill bit is rotated about its axis of rotation, high pressure fluid is ejected from the nozzle to rotate the nozzle about its axis of rotation while the nozzle orbits the axis of rotation of the drill bit.

  • Patent number: 4854397
Abstract: A system for directional drilling and related method of use is described herein which utilizes a drillstring suspended within a wellbore with an MWD and downhole turbine or motor connected adjacent a drill bit on a lower end of the drillstring, and with a top drive and/or rotary table connected adjacent an upper end of the drillstring. Within the method, desired limits of drilling associated parameters are inputted into a memory associated with a programmable digital computer. While drilling the wellbore, transmitted values of the drilling associated parameters are inputted into the memory. If the transmitted values are outsude of the desired limits, necessary adjustments are calculated and then made to weight-on-bit (WOB), RPM and/or drillstring azimuthal orientation to bring the transmitted values within the desired limits.

  • Patent number: 4852005
Abstract: A dipmeter signal processing method and system are disclosed, wherein portions of at least three are matched, utilizing correlation intervals, to derive a plurality of possible offsets. For each of the offsets, the spatial coordinates are defined of an associated vector parallel to an implicit bedding plane. The coordinates are utilized to combine nonparallel vectors to generate a plurality of dips. The dips that substantially repeat for a given depth or repeat from one depth level to the next within a given depth zone are retained to retain a single dip for each depth. A display is then outputted of each dip at each depth.

  • Patent number: 4819726
Abstract: A method and apparatus for indicating the position of a cement wiper plug in a wellbore during liner or casing cementing operations. The arrival of the cement wiper plug at a shearable, temporary restriction means in a pipe string is sensed by an increase in pipe string pressure at the surface. Using the knowledge of the location of this shearable, temporary restriction means, a determination of whether or not it is desirable to displace the cement wiper plug to a landing assembly at the bottom of the pipe string can be made. A predetermined amount of displacing fluid, sufficient to either completely or partially displace the cement wiper plug to the landing assembly, can then be introduced into the pipe string.
