  • Patent number: 4049152
Abstract: A closure cap is provided for an opening in a vessel. Inner and outer seatings extend around the opening. The closure cap has a body with attachment means to enable the cap to be releasably secured in the opening, and the body also has an inner seal for engaging the inner seating and an outer seal for engaging the outer seating. The cap is characterized by the fact that at least one of those seals comprises an outwardly directed flange of a flexible and resilient plastics material supported at its inner edge and yielding resiliently when in use. The flange is urged towards the associated seating due, at least in part, to the innate resilience of the material from which it is made.

  • Patent number: 4049087
Abstract: The present specification describes and claims a friction pad assembly for use in a sliding caliper disc brake and a sliding caliper disc brake incorporating such an assembly. The friction pad assembly comprises a backing plate, a pad of friction material secured to the backing plate, and a leaf spring, a central clip portion and two oppositely directed arms forming said leaf spring, the leaf spring being attached to the backing plate by means of said central clip portion. When the assembly is incorporated in a sliding caliper disc brake which comprises a torque member and a caliper member, the leaf spring engages the caliper member both pressing the friction pad assembly down onto guides in the torque member and biassing the torque member and caliper member apart to take up any clearance. Thus the possibility of the assembly rattling in the brake and the torque member and caliper member rattling together, is reduced.

  • Patent number: 4046233
Abstract: A sliding caliper disc brake has a caliper member slidably mounted on a fixed torque-taking member and carrying an actuator which urges a friction pad onto one side of a rotating disc whereupon the caliper member slides on the torque member and applies an opposite pad to the other side of the disc. Both pads are carried by the torque member so that circumferential drag forces experienced by the pads when they are clamped against the rotating disc are transferred directly to the torque member. The sliding connection is provided by a pin secured to one of the members and slidable in a bore in the other of the members.

  • Patent number: 4045986
Abstract: In the shaping of ductile metal sheet, especially superplastic alloy sheet, by the application of pressure differentials, the peripherally clamped sheet is first urged, by pressure differential in one direction, against a female molding surface to form a partially shaped bubblelike preform and then a male mold is advanced towards the sheet from the other side and a reverse pressure differential is applied to cause the pre-form to conform to the shape of that mold. The active area forming the pre-form may be restricted by an apertured plate adjacent the clamping plane, matching the overall outline of the body, and a plate the other side matching closely the profile of the body may confine the action of the reverse pressure only to that part of the sheet that engages the progressively increasing part of the male mold that extends through the clamping plane so that the sheet locks progressively onto the sides of the male mold to obtain an approximately uniform wall thickness in the finished body.

  • Patent number: 4039040
Abstract: A storage assembly in which a row of storage units, such as racks, are movable between fixed limits along the length of the row in either of two opposite directions so that a gangway can be provided between the sides of any two adjacent units, and in which each storage unit is provided with a set of reversible electric motors adapted to drive individual independently rotatable drive wheels to move that storage unit, and a set of switches is provided along each side of each storage unit so as to be operated by means at the side of an adjacent storage unit, each switch in each set being associated with a respective reversible motor in the vicinity of the switch so as to control operation of that motor independently of the others and to cut-off the supply of electricity to the motor when it is operated. Thus each motor will continue to operate to move the part of the unit by which it is carried until that part reaches a datum position defined by the side of an adjacent storage unit.

  • Patent number: 4034858
Abstract: A sliding caliper disc brake has a caliper member which applies friction elements to opposite sides of a rotatable disc and which is slidably mounted on a fixed torque-taking member by a single pin disposed at one side of the caliper. The other side of the caliper is urged into sliding engagement with the torque member by a spring arranged between the caliper and a projection on the torque member. The caliper carries a lug which is normally spaced from the projection but is engageable with the projection to limit outward pivoting of the caliper about the pin in the event of failure of the spring. The caliper lug may engage the spring so as to slide the spring on the projection upon sliding of the caliper so as to maintain spring orientation as the friction elements wear.
