  • Patent number: 7588100
Abstract: Apparatus and methodology is provided for directional drilling which avoid the effects of static friction between the drill string and the borehole. The drill string is rotated continuously in one direction during rotating drilling and during steering. During steering, the rotary speed of the drill string is varied within a revolution and substantially similarly for each of a plurality of subsequent revolutions. The drill string is rotated very slowly when oriented at or near the desired orientation to achieve the desired change in direction and then rotated much faster during the balance of each revolution. This angular velocity profile results in drilling at or near a desired orientation for a high percentage of the time it takes for each revolution. Changes in an effective tool-face orientation can be effected by shifting the phase of the velocity profile.

  • Patent number: 7575073
Abstract: A fluid handling system for drilling cuttings utilizes a constant and gravity managed liquid level between a substantially atmospheric separator and a shale shaker to maximize fluid residence time within the separator and ensure substantially all of the gas entrained in the cuttings is evolved and passed to a flare thus preventing evolution of the gas at the shale shaker. Solids from the separator are combined with liquid recirculation from and returning to the shale shaker. Optionally, a vacuum degasser is positioned between the separator and the shale shaker and separated gases are passed from the degasser to the flare. This method and system is particularly applicable to balanced, underbalanced and air drilling operations where the flow of gas is intermittent and unpredictable.

  • Patent number: 7568909
Abstract: A battery powered ignition and control system for a gas burner includes circuits for controlling a pilot burner, a main burner, a flame sensor and an igniter. Mechanically latched valves, which require power only to switch between and open and closed state are used to control the pilot and main gas. The circuitry spends a majority of time in a powered down state and draws power only when required to interrogate the state of the flame and to perform an ignition sequence as required, as periodically dictated by a watchdog system. The latching valves are electrically pulsed to change state and thus draw very low average power when called upon. Lithium batteries provide system power for a long duration.

  • Patent number: 7566218
Abstract: A burner assembly has a burner head and a deflector plate extending radially therefrom and across a firetube housing for supporting the burner assembly therein. The deflector plate has a plurality of angled vanes for re-directing secondary combustion air flowing through the housing. Secondary air is deflected away from a nozzle tip at the burner head to minimize lifting of the flame by the deflector plate or by a low pressure ring formed around the nozzle tip above the deflector plate for creating an area of low pressure. Preferably, a combination of the deflector plate and low pressure ring provides a stable flame positioned at the nozzle tip under low-fire and high-fire conditions enabling use of a pilotless ignition and flame sensing system which is consistent under low and high fire conditions. More preferably, the deflector plate supports the igniter and optionally a heat return tube for heat tracing of the freeze-prone burner assembly components.
