  • Patent number: 6917083
Abstract: A retrograde well region, having a buried layer of high conductivity, is formed in a semiconductor substrate. A trench structure is selectively etched in the semiconductor substrate down to a region proximate to or within the buried layer. A conducting local interconnect material is formed within and proximate to the trench structure to electrically connect surface portions of the substrate to the buried layer. The buried layer is used to provide a voltage source to an integrated circuit. In one application, a P-type buried layer provides ground potential or VSS to a source region of an N-channel FET transistor. In a second application, an N-type buried layer provides supply potential or VCC to a source of a P-channel FET transistor.

  • Patent number: 6149059
Abstract: A new bar code symbology in an exemplary embodiment employs three bars (and spaces) within nine modules, similar to Code 93. Fifty-three data characters are defined, including several special mode characters. By employing these special mode characters, together with certain routines, three symbol characters can represent two 8-bit bytes, or one 16-bit word. As a result, the symbology can efficiently encode 8-bit bytes for use in computer processing, or encode 16-bit character sets such as Unicode. Symbology encodes extended channel interpretation (ECI) numbers, provides multiple numeric compression modes, provides a structured append using a single mode character, as well as other features.

  • Patent number: 6139402
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mechanically and/or chemical-mechanically planarizing microelectronic substrates. In one embodiment in accordance with the principles of the present invention, a microelectronic substrate is planarized or polished on a planarizing medium having a thin film and a plurality of micro-features on the film. The film may be an incompressible sheet or web substantially impervious to a planarizing solution, and the micro-features may be configured in a selected pattern on the film to restrain fluid flow of the planarizing solution across the surface of the film under the substrate. The micro-features, for example, may be configured in a selected pattern that has a plurality of support points and at least one cavity to entrap a substantially contiguous, uniform distribution of the solution under the substrate during planarization.

  • Patent number: 6121233
Abstract: Methods and compositions are disclosed for the inhibition of cancer metastases mediated by endothelial adhesion molecules. The present invention discloses that sialyl Le.sup.a and di-sialyl Le.sup.a, which are expressed at the surface of cancer cells, function as a binding partner for LEC-CAMs, such as ELAM-1, which are expressed at the surface of endothelial cells. The present invention also discloses that LEC-CAMs, such as ELAM-1, involved in cancer metastasis share a carbohydrate domain common to both sialyl Le.sup.a and sialyl Le.sup.x. Antibodies, saccharides, glycoconjugates, enzyme inhibitors and other compounds may be used in the methods of the present invention to inhibit the binding of malignant cells to endothelial cells for a variety of purposes in vivo and in vitro.

  • Patent number: 6117658
Abstract: The PHA biosynthetic pathway is combined with a succinic semialdehyde metabolic pathway that metabolizes succinic semialdehyde via a 4-hydroxybutyryl-CoA intermediate in order to produce high levels of PHA comprising 4HB monomer units. This combination is particularly useful, in part, because the PHA biosynthetic pathway is well known and has been expressed to produce P(3HB) to levels as high as 70-80% of the cell dry weight, while the succinic semialdehyde metabolic pathway is also well known, and the combination of the two pathways means that production of PHAs comprising 4HB monomer units does not depend on immediate precursors of 4-hydroxybutyrate. Rather, the production of the PHAs comprising 4HB monomer units can occur simply from the extraction of succinate or succinyl-CoA from the citric acid cycle when the host cell is grown on an inexpensive carbon source such as glucose.

  • Patent number: 6115318
Abstract: A integrated circuit, such as a memory integrated circuit, includes a vernier clock adjustment circuit receiving an input clock signal and providing a rising-edge clock signal representing the input clock signal delayed by a rising-edge delay and providing a falling-edge clock signal representing the input clock signal delayed by a falling-edge delay. An edge triggered circuit receives data and the rising-edge and falling-edge clock signals, and stores data at the rising-edge of the rising-edge clock signal and at the falling-edge of the falling-edge clock signal. One form of the invention is a memory system having a memory controller coupled to memory modules through data and command busses. Each memory module includes the vernier clock adjustment circuitry.

  • Patent number: 6111055
Abstract: An ester-terminated dimer acid-based polyamide may be blended with a solvent to form a gel. The solvent may be flammable, and a wick may be added to the resulting gel so as to form a candle. Depending on the composition, the candle may be formed into a free standing pillar, or may be better suited to being placed in a container. The solvent may be mineral oil. A solid coating may be placed around the candle, for advantages including to enhance the mechanical stability of the gelled body, and to eliminate the tendency of a gel to have an oily feel and to accept noticeable fingerprints. The solvent which, in combination with the ester-terminated dimer acid-based polymer forms a gel, may be or include a fragrance material, an insecticide or an insect repellent. A wick may or may not be present in this gel, but in any event, the composition provides for the release of the fragrance, insecticide or insect-repellent.

  • Patent number: 6104209
Abstract: A differential clock receiver for a SynchLink-type Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SLDRAM) includes a differential amplifier with a novel method for biasing its NMOS and PMOS current sources. A differential clock received and amplified by the differential amplifier switches a set of multiplexers, which respond by outputting a differential output clock. The multiplexers can be "disabled" by an inactive enable signal so they output a constant "0" level for the differential output clock. This disabling feature of the differential clock receiver is particularly useful with the intermittent data clocks found in SLDRAMs. Also, the novel biasing method for the current sources of the differential amplifier gives the clock receiver very low skew.
