The present invention provides procedures for prepaing solid supports, and their use in binding assays, such that non-specific background on the solid supports is reduced. The reduction of non-specific background permits the detection of low levels of specific binding which normally would be masked by the non-specific binding. The methods are applicable to a variety of target ligands and probes, including nucleic acids such as oligonucleotides.

    Abstract: A technique for sharing radio frequency spectrum in a multiple communication satellite system with a plurality of satellites in each of a plurality of non-geostationary (non-GSO) Earth orbits. A first satellite communication system uses a plurality of predefined non-GSO Earth orbits and a second satellite communication system uses a plurality of predefined orbits that are interleaved with the orbital planes of the first satellite communication system. In this manner, it is possible to achieve satisfactory discrimination between satellites and Earth-based stations. With near polar orbits, the topocentric separation between satellites decreases as the latitude of the Earth-based stations increases due to the convergence of orbital planes near the poles. To compensate for the decreased topocentric separation, the system utilizes one or more mitigation techniques to select one of a plurality of possible satellites to communicate with the Earth-based station in order to effectively increase topocentric separation.

    Abstract: A command buffer for use in packetized DRAM includes a two stage shift register for shifting for sequentially storing two of the four 10-bit command words in each packet. After the first two words of each packet have been shifted into the shift register, they are transferred to a first storage register and output from the first storage register. After the final two words of each packet have been shifted into the shift register, they are transferred to a second storage register and output from the second storage register. The first two command words are output from the first storage register before the last two command words are applied to the command buffer. As a result, the DRAM can start processing the first two command words of the command packet before the entire command packet has been received. The command buffer also includes circuitry for determining whether a command packet is intended for the memory device containing the command buffer or whether it is intended for another memory device.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing an optical fiber having a core portion doped with a dopant and a surrounding optical cladding portion is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of drawing a fiber from a molten extremity of a silica preform and moving the fiber along towards a device for coating it with a protective sheath. Prior to the coating step, the moving fiber is irradiated with irregularly modulated actinic radiation, thereby causing corresponding irregular variations in the refractive index of its core portion as a function of longitudinal position. The resulting fiber demonstrates a significantly reduced polarisation mode dispersion.

    Abstract: For eliminating the emphasis given an audio signal in the transmitter, an audio signal processor of an audio device (e.g., a car radio) contains a low-pass filter. In order to attenuate the spurious higher-frequency signal fractions in case of poor reception and accordingly low received field strength, the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter is shifted in the direction of lower frequencies in accordance with a received field strength signal when the field strength becomes lower. In order to avoid external adjusting components and save pins on the IC chip, the field strength signal is supplied to an analog-to-digital converter and the latter supplies a digital signal to a low-pass filter whose cutoff frequency is variable. For this purpose the low-pass filter contains a number of integrated components one of which is connected or disconnected by a digit place of the digital signal in each case.

The rate at which the duty cycle is varied may be selected to produce an apparent intensity optical signal which varies continuously between a greatest and a least intensity. Also, the rate at which the duty cycle is varied may be selected from a plurality of rates, each corresponding with a one of a plurality of power-consumption states in which the computer system can operate.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for collecting a large volume of blood from an umbilical cord in a sterile environment are shown and described. A housing having an inner region adapted to retain an umbilical cord in a desired location is provided, the housing having an opening through which the cord extends from the inner region of the housing to a region external to the housing. The cord is cut by a blade coupled to the housing, either by the motion of the blade from a first position to a second position, or by the movement of two portions of the housing from a first extended position to a second collapsed position. The newly cut end of the umbilical cord falls and hangs freely in the inner region of the housing, blood flowing from the placenta and umbilical cord via gravity into a blood collection region of the housing. The blood collection region may be flexible, and may be coupled to a conventional blood collection bag.
