  • Patent number: 4292175
Abstract: A compact, relatively small unit for treatment of wastewater for discharge into maritime waters is disclosed. The wastewater is received in a surge or retention tank and is delivered by gravity flow or pumped to a macerator for comminution of the solids content of the wastewater. Prior to entering the macerator, salt water on a controlled flow basis is added to the wastewater in sufficient amounts to insure a high enough salt content for use as the electrolyte in an electrocatalytic cell. From the macerator the wastewater to be treated is directed into a vertically oriented, elongated, electrocatalytic cell having a plurality of parallel, closely spaced electrodes therein positioned parallel to the flow of wastewater therethrough. The wastewater is directed through the electrocatalytic unit. The end electrodes of the spaced electrode plates are connected to a source of direct current sufficient to generate chlorine, oxygen and other treating chemicals in situ.

  • Patent number: 4285832
Abstract: A method is disclosed for extracting residual vegetable oil contained in spent bleaching clays used in refining and processing of such oil and for processing the extracted clay for reuse. The spent bleaching clay containing the residual vegetable oil is mixed with water, an organic binder and a plastic clay to form a composition of putty-like consistency which can be formed into particulate solids of suitable size for solvent extraction of the oil. The vegetable oil in the particulate solids is then extracted by solvent extraction with a suitable solvent. The remaining particulate solids with the oil removed may be retorted to produce an activated carbon/clay product useful to lighten the color of the oil being processed, as a filter aid, for water treatment purposes or for other uses where activated carbon is generally used.

  • Patent number: 4283886
Abstract: An elongated metal workpiece such as a slab or billet is moved longitudinally beneath a grinding head by a reciprocating carriage mounted on an elongated track. The carriage receives a billet from a charging table, reciprocates the billet beneath the grinding head for a plurality of grinding passes, and then delivers the finished billet to a discharge table. The grinder head includes a rotating grinding wheel mounted at the end of a first arm which is pivotally secured to one end of a pivotally mounted second arm. The vertical position of the grinding wheel, and hence the downward force exerted by the grinding wheel on the billet, is principally determined by the angular position and torque, respectively, of the first arm while the horizontal position of the grinding wheel transverse to the longitudinal axis of the billet is principally determined by the angular position of the second arm.

  • Patent number: 4278837
Abstract: A microprocessor for executing computer programs which are stored in cipher to prevent software piracy. Such a crypto-microprocessor deciphers the enciphered program piecemeal as it executes it, so that a large enciphered program can be securely executed without disclosing the deciphered program or associated data to persons who have access to the wiring of the computer in which the crypto-microprocessor is a component. Such a device may process valuable proprietary programs and data files which are distributed in cipher on videodiscs, semiconductor memory, or other media without risk of software piracy. Various methods of encryption may be used including methods which result in the cipher of a byte being a complicated function of the byte's address in memory. Each crypto-microprocessor chip may use a unique cipher key or tables for deciphering the program, so that a program that can be executed in one chip cannot be run in any other microprocessor.

  • Patent number: 4273127
Abstract: Laser radiation is coupled to an optical instrument having a relatively narrow working edge from which the radiation is emitted in a relatively narrow zone of intense radiation leakage. The working edge is placed in contact with vascularized tissues, and the laser radiation emanating from the working edge in combination with the contact between the working edge and the tissues forms an incision, and the laser radiation photocoagulates tissue adjacent the incision. The contact between the working edge and the tissues accurately positions the laser radiation with respect to the tissue, places pressure on vessels to aid hemostasis, mechanically stresses the incision line and provides the surgeon with tactile feedback. Radiation propagates from a laser to the optical instrument through a low-loss flexible fiberoptic waveguide by means of multimode optical waveguide propagation.

  • Patent number: 4269095
Abstract: A stop mechanism for facilitating the cutting of an elongated workpiece into a large number of equally sized pieces with a radial arm saw. An elongated rail extends perpendicularly beneath the arm to serve as a guide for the workpiece as it is fed into the saw from the infeed side to the outfeed side of the table. An elongated infeed guide which is parallel to the rail spaces the workpiece from the rail as it is fed into the saw. A stop mechanism includes a housing which is secured to the outfeed side of the table and a plunger which moves toward the rail in an extended position and away from the rail to a retracted position. As the workpiece is guided toward the outfeed side of the table, the end of the workpiece contacts the extended plunger thereby terminating further infeed. The workpiece is then cut with the saw, and the plunger is momentarily retracted to allow additional infeed of the workpiece. The end of the workpiece for the next cut then abuts the extended plunger.
