A reflector displays the optically-detectable indications to an optical detector, such as a camera, which generates an electronic signal representative of the optically-detectable indication. Associated circuitry generates a second electronic signal indicative of the presence or absence of an article in one or more receiving locations. The second electronic signal may be used to derive a count of articles delivered into the receptacles, and to actuate ejection of receptacles which are under-filled.

    Abstract: A tape cassette includes a pair of reels for a magnetic tape. Each reel has a center opening. A plurality of first ribs extends radially into the opening from a peripheral wall of the opening. A recorder deck has a pair of parallel drive spindles. Each drive spindle is for insertion into one opening of the pair of reels. Each drive spindle has a second rib. The second rib is adapted for engagement with the first rib. The first rib includes an end face having a planar surface on a trailing side of the first rib. The trailing side is defined with respect to a tape-slack removing, rotational direction. The planar surface is inclined in such a manner that insertion of the spindles into the openings, the second rib engages the first rib, and creates a force which drives the reel in the tape-slack removing rotational direction.

    Abstract: A low loss cladded halide fiber for transmission of infrared energy is provided, and a process for making the same by growing a single crystal ingot from a powder of a core halide, extruding or machining the ingot to provide a cylindrical billet core, assembling the billet core, preferably wrapped in a polymer film, within a sleeve member of a second halide of lower refractive index than the core, prepared in the same fashion as the core, and coaxially core drilled to accept the billet core. The assembled composite billet is covered with a polymer film, heated, and extruded to form a polymer coated fiber having a diameter in the range of 75 to 2,000 microns. The extruded fiber may be rapidly cooled as it leaves the extrusion die to minimize grain size and scattering loss and may be contained in a coaxial outer strength member.

    Abstract: A digital IR gas analyzer comprises a sample cell having a conical shaped interior wall and a filter wheel provided with HC, CO and CO2 interference filters. The filter wheel and IR detector are temperature stabilized. The HC, CO and CO2 gas samples are normalized to a precision reference voltage. The normalized samples are digitized and processed, i.e., for linearization, cross-talk correction and zero drift temperature compensation, by a digital processor. The processed samples are then converted to analog to drive HC, CO and CO2 meters. HC, CO and CO2 gas channels are zeroed simultaneously and calibrated automatically in response to control panel switches.

    Abstract: A continuous process and apparatus for producing quick cooking rice or vegetables are provided. Such rice or vegetables produced according to the present invention require only approximately 3 to 5 minutes swelling time in hot, not boiling, water to prepare for consumption. The rice and vegetables produced by this process are also high in nutrients in that very little removal of starch or other nutrients occur, with consequent minimal water fouling. The process involves contacting rice or vegetable pieces with water or steam until the rice or vegetable pieces are completely gelatinized and then drying the rice or vegetables.

When used as an electrical generator, two gas concentration cells are connected in a closed gas circuit. The first gas concentration cell is heated and generates electricity. The second gas concentration cell repressurizes the gas which travels between the cells. The electrical energy which is generated by the first cell drives the second cell as well as an electrical load. When used as a heat pump, two gas concentration cells are connected in a closed gas circuit. The first cell is supplied with electrical energy from a direct current source and releases heat. The second cell absorbs heat. The apparatus has no moving parts and thus approximates a heat engine.

Monoclonal and monospecific, polyclonal antibodies to these cytoplasmic antigens find application in the immunodiagnosis of Candida infections.A procedure is provided for preparing partially purified cytoplasmic antigen of pathogenic Candida species for administration to splenocyte-donating mice. Also provided is a method for the biochemical purification of cytoplasmic antigen of a pathogenic Candida species used for the preparation of monoclonal and monospecific, polyclonal antisera thereto.
