Abstract: A system and method for performing a capsulotomy employ a handpiece including a cutting assembly that fits into the anterior chamber of the eye, and cuts an opening in the capsule of the eye with mechanical oscillation. The cutting assembly includes a rigid sleeve enclosing an oscillating shaft. The sleeve and oscillating shaft are configured to induce a laminar flow of fluid in the interior of the sleeve during operation of the system. The cutting member oscillates in a direction transverse to the longitudinal dimension of the handpiece.
