    Abstract: A wireless terminal using OFDM signaling supporting both terrestrial and satellite base station connectivity operates using conventional access probe signaling in a first mode of operation to establish a timing synchronized wireless link with a terrestrial base station. In a second mode of operation, used to establish a timing synchronized wireless link with a satellite base station, a slightly modified access protocol is employed. The round trip signaling time and timing ambiguity between a wireless terminal and a satellite base station is substantially greater than with a terrestrial base station. The modified access protocol uses coding of access probe signals to uniquely identify a superslot index within a beaconslot. The modified protocol uses multiple access probes with different timing offsets to further resolve timing ambiguity and allows the satellite base station access monitoring interval to remain small in duration.

    Abstract: An iterative message passing decoder, e.g., an LDPC decoder, operating in conjunction with a soft input-soft output signal processing unit, e.g., an ISI detector, has an error floor performance region influenced by the decoder's sub-optimal message passing nature. Error floor reduction is achieved by a simple message re-initialization mechanism. Decoder edge states, e.g., constraint to variable node messages in decoder memory, are reinitialized, e.g., for an iteration, during the decoding after soft values provided by signal processing unit have improved. During the message re-initialization and for some subsequent amount of iterative decoder processing, extrinsic information fed back from the decoder to the signal processing unit and/or soft values delivered to the decoder from the signal processing unit, in an outer communications loop, is temporarily frozen, e.g., using a switch and a buffer. Then, the outer communications loop is restored as the decoding continues, achieving improved decoding performance.

    Abstract: Improved ways of communicating assignment signals using flash signaling are described, e.g., for wireless terminals with low SNR, that are more robust against large variation of channel gains due to e.g., frequency selective fading and fast fading in time. Coding and modulation methods and apparatus that have excellent properties against symbol erasures are described. The use of flash signaling provides an improved assignment channel having strong performance on the fading channel without compromising the performance on the AWGN channel. In one exemplary embodiment, the coding and modulation method can tolerate up to 5 erased symbols out of 8 transmitted symbols. One embodiment reduces or minimizes the sector interference on the flash assignment by improving or maximizing orthogonality between different sectors. In addition, one embodiment describes improved ways of swapping flash assignment tone-symbols in the presence other high priority signals, like sector pilots and sector null pilots.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for synchronizing wireless video data. The method involves first synchronizing the pixel clock of a video output device with the pixel clock of a video input device. This is accomplished by latching video counters in the input and output devices (creating a transmit and receive timestamp) for each wireless video data packet and adjusting the pixel clock frequency of the output device according to differences between these timestamps. Once the pixel clocks are synchronized, video frames from the video output device are synchronized with video frames from video input device such that only a fraction of a video frame is buffered at any time. The video frames are synchronized by offsetting the data stream from the video input device N lines ahead of the data stream from the video output device, wherein N is less than the total number of lines in a single video frame.
