  • Patent number: 6171993
Abstract: The present invention provides an ethylene copolymer resin that has unique melt elastic properties not observed in ethylene copolymers heretofore known. Specifically, the ethylene copolymer resin of the present invention when in pelletized form has a reduction in melt elasticity (ER) of 10% or more to a final value of 1.0 or less upon rheometric low shear modification or solution dissolution. Moreover, the resin of the present invention when in reactor-made form exhibits at least a partially reversible increase of 10% or more in ER when pelletizing the same. An ethylene polymerization catalyst, a process of preparing the ethylene copolymer resin and a high-impact film are also provided herein.

  • Patent number: 6153713
Abstract: A process for making hydroxy-functional resins based on acrylate, hydroxyalkylacrylate, and allyl monomers is disclosed. The key to the process is to add the hydroxyalkylacrylate monomer in an amount and manner effective to produce a resin that contains, without vacuum stripping, less than about 1 wt. % of residual unreacted allyl monomers. Eliminating the need to vacuum strip the allyl monomer reduces process costs and enables the synthesis of new resins. The hydroxy-functional resins are readily crosslinked with melamines, polyisocyanates, or epoxies to give thermoset polymers.

Abstract: Allylic copolymer resins and processes for making them are disclosed. The resins are made by copolymerizing an ethylenic monomer, a monofunctional allyl monomer, and a multifunctional allyl monomer under free-radical conditions. The multifunctional allyl monomer is used in an amount and manner effective to give a copolymer resin having a polydispersity (Mw/Mn) within the range of about 5 to about 30. The resins, which are easy to make with even bulk polymerization, are particularly valuable, for example, as toner resins, thermoset resins, reactive plasticizers, and rheology modifiers.
