  • Patent number: 7653127
Abstract: Bit-Edge Zero Forcing Equalizer. A novel solution is presented by which a BE-ZFE (Bit-Edge Zero Forcing Equalizer) is employed to drive an error term within a data signal to an essentially zero value. This new BE-ZFE looks at values of data that occur at the bit edges of a data signal and drives the associated error term to zero. The new BE-ZFE is appropriately implemented within communication systems that are phase (or jitter) noise limited. Some examples of such communication systems include high-speed serial links one type of which serviced using a SERDES (Serializer/De-serializer) where data that is originally in a parallel format is serialized into a serial data stream and then subsequently de-serialized back into a parallel data stream.

  • Patent number: 6801577
Abstract: A transmitter portion and a receiver portion are implemented within various devices that communicate using low voltage swing pads communicatively coupled via a trace. The transmitter portion of one device generates a current signal that is pushed/pulled to a low voltage swing pad and is then passed across the trace to another low voltage swing pad. The transmitter portion includes a current driver that outputs the current signal to the low voltage swing pads, and the receiver portion includes a trans-impedance amplifier that transforms the received current signal into a voltage signal. The low voltage swing pad driver and receiver generates a relatively low voltage swing when compared to CMOS full-scale voltage swings thereby significantly reducing the possibility of introducing any noise and/or distortion of data that is communicated via the interface.

  • Patent number: 6753700
Abstract: A high speed data communication system uses a single-ended bus architecture with a reference signal extracted from a differential periodic signal that is transmitted along with single-ended data. By using a periodic signal such a clock signal with approximately 50% duty cycle, a much more stable and accurate reference signal is established for receiving single-ended data.

  • Patent number: 6542043
Abstract: All PMOS (p channel metal oxide semiconductor) fully differential voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). A fully differential implementation within the present invention provides for a very effective rejection of common mode noises. In addition, the PMOS implementation of the present invention allows for a substantial reduction in 1/f noise. The PMOS fully differential VCO may be employed within phase locked loops (PLLs) and other applications that require a very clean signal (with very low noise) and that must be operable at very high frequencies. The present invention enables a very compact design, thereby minimizing extraneous noise pickup. The device may be over-driven with a higher power supply than is commonly used in prior art VCOs; the over-driving provides for a higher transconductance gm from the PMOS device enabling higher gain. A center-tapped inductor is shunted to ground in a manner that does not reduce the inductor's quality factor Q.

  • Patent number: 6173257
Abstract: A multi-rate speech codec supports a number of encoding bit rate modes by adaptively selecting encoding bit rate modes to match communication channel restrictions. In higher bit rate encoding modes, an accurate representation of speech through CELP (code-excited linear prediction) and other associated modeling parameters are generated for higher quality decoding and reproduction. To achieve high quality in high lower bit rate encoding modes, the speech encoder departs from the strict waveform matching criteria of regular CELP coders and strives to identify significant perceptual features of the input signal. To support lower bit rate encoding modes, a variety of techniques are applied, many of which involve the classification of the input signal. For each of the bit rate modes selected, a number of fixed or innovation sub-codebooks are selected in use in generating innovation vectors.
