  • Patent number: 4607383
Abstract: A throat microphone has an outer resonant diaphragm which is adapted to be secured against the throat of a wearer and which cooperates with a housing to form an outer chamber. An electret microphone element disposed inside the outer chamber includes an electret diaphragm acoustically coupled to the outer diaphragm and an electret housing forming an inner chamber with the electret diaphragm. The electret diaphragm is perforated to provide pressure relief between the two chambers to give the electret microphone element a rising response characteristic, which is enhanced by a differentiating network in the input circuit of a local preamplifier. The outer diaphragm is so formed as to have a principal resonance at about 3 kilohertz to provide a further emphasis to voice frequencies at or near that resonance.

  • Patent number: 4603766
Abstract: A low mass clutch in which a thin hard metal disk carried by an output shaft is placed between a driven hardened solid wheel and the outer ring of a ball bearing. The inner ring of the bearing is carried on a shaft connected to a lever. In the quiescent state of the device, the disk and wheel slide relative to each other. To engage the clutch, an electromagnet is energized, exerting a force on the lever causing the ball bearing to exert a relatively high force on the disk. In response, the wheel drives the disk with an extremely rapid angular acceleration.

  • Patent number: 4602160
Abstract: Monochromatic infrared radiation of variable wavelengths between 1.0 and 3.5 microns is directed upon a portion of a moving web, and the spectra of infrared radiation reflected from the web portion and of radiation transmitted through the web portion are separately measured by sensors located on both sides of the web. These spectra are combined to provide an absorption spectrum insensitive to any elastic scattering that is also present. Measures of the contents of the web constituents are generated by least-square fitting the individual absorption spectra of the constituents to the measured absorption spectrum of the web. Means for calibrating the reflectance and transmittance measurements and for keeping the sensor viewing windows free of dirt and dust are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4601116
Abstract: A Coanda dryer nozzle unit in which a nozzle opening formed in a plenum chamber just below and extending along one edge of a wall of the chamber parallel to the web to be dried is connected to the upper surface of the wall by a curved surface to produce a Coanda flow of air over the curved surface and along the upper surface of the wall. A lip along the other edge of the wall has a curved surface which directs the airflow upwardly toward the web and produces a pad of air between the web and the wall.

  • Patent number: 4588292
Abstract: An improved universal document validator in which a document is transported along a path past light detectors and associated light sources positioned above and below the path, such that light from the sources is directed toward the path and reflected onto the detectors to produce outputs therefrom. A first stored value representing the desired output of each detector with no document in the transport path and with its associated light source illuminated is divided by the actual output of each detector with no document in the transport path and with its associated light source illuminated, to produce a plurality of quotients. If any of the quotients falls outside a predetermined range, the validator turns itself off. A microprocessor control system uses the outputs of the detectors with a document in the transport path together with the quotients to produce an indication of the validity of the document.

  • Patent number: 4585535
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium having a coating of magnetic particles deposited thereon by electrophoresis. Magnetic particles are encapsulated by dry milling in a thermoplastic binder which is insoluble at ambient or room temperatures and is softenable at temperatures higher than 70.degree. C. A charge director for producing functional sites in the binder is incorporated in the encapsulating polymer during the dry-milling step. The encapsulated mass is comminuted or pulverized and then wet-milled with a major amount of a low-boiling aliphatic hydrocarbon liquid. A suspension is then formed with additional hydrocarbon liquid. Additional charge director may be added, either during the wet-milling step or during the suspension-forming step. The suspension is then used as a bath from which the coating is deposited by electrophoresis. The magnetic particles are oriented by the application of a magnetic field, either during the depositing step or subsequent thereto.

  • Patent number: 4585094
Abstract: The invention relates to a hydraulic rim brake for bicycles with a triggering mechanism which is attached to the handlebar of the bicycle and is actuated by a hand lever, with two brake cylinder housings which are attached to the frame of the bicycle in oppositely located relationship to each other and enclose between them a wheel rim, the brake cylinder housings being connected by pressure lines to the triggering mechanism, with pistons displaceable in the brake cylinder housings, and with brake shoe supports arranged on these pistons for supporting brake shoes engaging the rim. In order to protect the piston from the effect of harmful bending moments, provision is made for the brake shoe supports to be in the form of flanges which are connected to the piston and are each displaceable parallel to the motion of the brake piston in a slide guide provided on the brake cylinder housing, and for the slide guide to simultaneously constitute abutments for absorption of the braking forces.

The composition has an amount of spacer particles having their smallest diameter greater than twenty microns and greatest diameter less than seventy microns disseminated therethrough. The spacer particles are adapted to form an air gap between the developed electrostatic image on a photoconductor, or dielectric support, and the medium to which the developed image is to be transferrred. The population of the spacer particles is such that their interparticle distance on the photoconductor is four millimeters or less. The spacer particles may be formed of any desired material, insoluble in the carrier liquid, and have any desired shape. A tetrahedral pyramidal shape or spherical shape is preferred.

  • Patent number: RE32191
Abstract: A merchandising machine of the type in which a merchandise carrier comprising a plurality of levels of compartments, each adapted to receive merchandise, is mounted within a cabinet for movement as a unit around a vertical axis with the compartment levels at heights corresponding to respective cabinet access openings closed by normally locked doors. Respective controls corresponding to the levels are adapted to be set alternatively to cause the levels to operate in a first-in, first-out mode or in a shopper mode. In the first-in, first-out mode, upon actuation of the selection button corresponding to the level, the carrier is driven until the next full compartment of the level is behind its associated door and then stops. In the shopper mode, the selecting button corresponding to the level causes the carrier to be driven until any desired compartment of that level is behind its associated door.
