    Abstract: A breath analyzer is provided to test for the presence of an unknown infrared energy absorbing compound in a breath sample collected from an individual. Infrared energy of at least two wavelengths is passed through the collected sample. The first wavelength of infrared energy, 3.48 microns for example, is selected to be significantly absorbed by a predetermined infrared energy absorbing compound, such as ethanol. The second wavelength of infrared energy, 3.39 microns for example, is selected to be significantly absorbed by other infrared energy absorbing compounds, such as acetone. The infrared energy remaining in the first wavelength after its passing through the breath sample is compared to the infrared energy remaining in the second wavelength after its passing through the breath sample. The lack of a predetermined comparison value indicates the presence of an infrared energy absorbing compound other than the predetermined infrared energy absorbing compound.

    Abstract: A dual scintillation radiation detector having two different scintillation detector materials arranged and shaped in order to detect and determine the quantity of the two different radiations such as beta and gamma present within an unknown sample. The detector can be used in apparatus for laboratory use, manual portable probe applications, or in elongated probes for simultaneously reading radiation present as the probe is lowered into an earth bore. The scintillation radiation detector material for the high energy radiation is positioned on the opposite side of the first detector material from the radiation source so that the high energy radiation must penetrate through the first material before entering the second. This provision allows discrimination and filtering of the low energy radiation from the second detector material. The first detector material is provided in the shape of a thin, flat plate or in the shape of a hollow cup with the second material mounted on one side of the plate or within the cup.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for filling the wells of an antibiotic plate with different concentrations of fluid including an array of fluid containers, each having a single needle valve inserted through a stopper member which is held in an open end of the container. Each needle valve includes an inner tube for supplying pressurizing air to one end of the containers which forces the fluid through an outer tube of the needle valve and out the opposite end of the container. A length of flexible tubing connected to each of the needle valve outer tubes carries the fluid through one of a plurality of slots formed in a pinch valve assembly. The pinch valve assembly includes slide members and resilient pinch rods extending laterally from sides thereof. In a first position, the slide members are held such that the pinch rods close the flexible tubing to prevent passage of the fluid into the wells of the antibiotic plate.

    Abstract: The total container comprises inner and outer container bodies, each closed at the bottom and sides and open at the top. The side margins of the inner container body are sealingly connected to the side margins of the outer container body, and the bottom margin of the container body is sealingly connected to at least one wall of the outer container body. The bottom of the compartment within the inner container body is a substantial distance above the bottom of the outer container body. The upper margins of the inner container body are sealingly connected to upper portions of the walls of the outer container body, so that the inner container body serves as a partition between first and second inflation chambers having valved air flow ports. The upper end of the outer container body may be wrapped up into a spiral formation to seal the compartment and the container as a whole.

    Abstract: The invention is an improvement in the process for recovering uranyl uranium from solutions in which the uranyl uranium is recovered with an liquid-liquid solvent extraction agent dissolved in an inert solvent, the loaded agent scrubbed with water, the scrubbed agent stripped with ammonium carbonate solution to form a slurry of ammonium uranyl tricarbonate, the stripped agent returned to the liquid-liquid solvent extraction step, and the ammonium uranyl tricarbonate calcined to a uranium oxide product, the improvement which comprises stripping the uranium from the ion exchange agent with an alkali metal carbonate rather than ammonium carbonate, scrubbing the loaded agent with acidified alkali carbonate strip solution prior to stripping, and regenerating the stripped liquid-liquid solvent extraction agent with a mineral acid before return to the liquid-liquid solvent extraction circuit.

    Abstract: In the field of chemical fuels, prior art coal gasification produces a fuel value of a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen which has a lower BTU than methane. The present process uses coal resources more economically for industry by converting part of the hydrogen and part of the carbon in the carbon monoxide of the gas mixture to methane, by continuously introducing the gas mixture into a fluid bed in the presence of iron under conditions of pressure and temperature which promote the reduction of carbon monoxide to carbon, the formation of iron carbide from the iron and carbon, and the formation of methane and iron from iron carbide and hydrogen, and continuously removing from the fluid bed a methane enriched gas mixture including carbon monoxide and hydrogen having a substantially increased fuel value over the gas mixture introduced into the fluid bed.

    Abstract: The machine comprises a splicing table with a stacking table at each end together with a vertical backboard. The splicing table fixedly abuts the backboard and the stacking tables are vertically movable in substantial abutment with the backboard. Bundles of fan-folded paper are placed on the stacking tables with their tops substantially coplanar with the splicing table. The top sheets of each bundle are swung onto the table in abutting relation, positioned by locator pins, and held by vacuum. A length of tape is drawn from a tape supply across the abutted ends and secured, and the tape is then trimmed to the width of the sheets. The vacuum hold-down is released and the second bundle is folded onto the first one. The same operation is then performed on the second and third bundles and several successive bundles.

    Abstract: A drainage device for attachment to a portion of the skin of an individual is provided. The device comprises a flange which sealingly engages the skin and has an opening therein to overlie a wound in the skin tissue. A ring member having a channel formed therein is mounted on a side of the flange opposite that side of the flange engaging the skin. A locking clip is connected to the ring member and extends laterally between portions thereof. A drainage strip is releasably held in the locking clip and inserted into the wound so that drainage of the wound occurs. A removable cover member grippingly engages the outer wall of the ring member to prevent the drainage from escaping the confines of the device.

    Abstract: System includes transport means to carry sewage to holding pits or tanks in open areas remote from community and delivery from tanks to tunnels plowed in ground. Transport may be by tankers or pipeline. Tender tankers receive batches of sewage from storage tanks and deliver to field where tractors pull frames with depending plow members which produce tunnels in ground with narrow slashes or crevices extending to surface. Frames carry manifolds and discharge conduits to deliver sewage to tunnels. Tender tankers arranged beside tractors have supply conduits connecting them to manifolds, with pumps in conduits to produce continuous flow. Tankers travel in synchronism with tractors and deliver sewage to tunnels as they are formed. Compacting rollers pulled behind frames close crevices directly after they are formed by plow, and sewage is sealed into ground.

    Abstract: An improved high resolution rotating head ultrasonic scanner is provided for use in an ultrasonic scanning subsystem of an ultrasonic breast scanning system. The scanning subsystem of the breast scanning system includes a pair of high resolution ultrasonic rotating scanning heads mounted on a transport mechanism. A scan is conducted by moving the transport mechanism while the scanning heads rotate so that a series of parallel uniformly spaced cross-sectional scans of the tissue of the breast are conducted from the inferior to the superior border of the breast. Each scanning head has three ultrasonic transducers uniformly spaced around its perimeter. The focal ranges of the transducers of a given scanning head are chosen so that a sector scan conducted by each head is divided into slightly overlapping zones with the depth of each zone corresponding to the focal range of one of the transducers on each scanning head.
