  • Patent number: 4168933
Abstract: The trailer comprises a transport base with road wheels and a floor on which is mounted an elongate shell having side walls and a roof, the planform of the shell corresponding to the planform of the base. Separate, removable fasteners connect the shell to the base. Jacks are connected to the aft end of the shell to raise it out of contact with the base when the fasteners have been removed. Extensible rollers at the forward end of the shell are lowered to contact the floor of the base. The base can then be moved forward to remove it from under the shell so that it can be used as an open flat bed trailer. Other jacks are connected to a forward portion of the shell, to support the shell when not in use. An assemblage of partitioning components is provided to provide compartments for transporting a pair of horses and is removable to provide an open cargo space when needed.

  • Patent number: 4167695
Abstract: The system is intended primarily for use in multi-engined aircraft although it has great utility in any installation having an engine and a generator driven thereby. A kit for each engine includes a generator drive train connected to the engine to be driven thereby, a driving formation for connection to a generator, and a coupling or clutch in the drive train to decouple the generator in case of mechanical or electrical failure. Signal means may be located in the cockpit in the pilot's field of view to indicate generator failure. A switch operable by the pilot in response to the failure signal acts to remotely cause decoupling of the generator. The active signal operates means to deactivate any other decoupling switch to prevent mistakenly decoupling a properly functioning generator. Cross-connection switch means are connected to all engines and generators and may be actuated to electrically connect an active generator to the engine having the decoupled generator.

  • Patent number: 4164172
Abstract: Method and apparatus for controlling the amount of outside air introduced into a given space being ventilated as a function of the oxygen content of the air in the space to minimize the energy expended in heating or cooling air flowing through the space while maintaining the oxygen content of the air above that required for the well-being of humans occupying said space. A fuel cell produces an electric current the magnitude of which is a function of the partial pressure of the oxygen present in the air surrounding the fuel cell. The output of the fuel cell is applied to a control circuit which applies control signals to the motor control circuit of a damper motor to admit outside air when the partial pressure of the oxygen in the occupied space falls to a predetermined minimum level and to exclude outside air and to recirculate return air when the partial pressure of the oxygen in the space rises to a certain maximum level.

  • Patent number: 4161769
Abstract: Combined hand rail and lighting fixture for a walkway, such as a stair flight, characterized by a tubular member with spaced openings in a lower portion of its wall in which are disposed lighting fixtures, each comprising an extruded housing, a reflector for supporting an illuminating bulb, and an extruded arcuate window closing an opening, the housing and reflector forming a space for receiving the requisite electrical conductors. Its construction is such that it inherently prevents entry of water and hence may be employed outdoors as well as indoors. After installation and wiring, the housing is preferably secured to the hand rail and replacement of a bulb may be effected by removal of a pair of securing clips and the window, only, without disturbing the housing or permanent wiring connections.

  • Patent number: 4158452
Abstract: A clamping lock is provided for use with a looped tie in a form for settable casting compositions, such as concrete, which lock is provided with protrusions on each of a pair of clamping members to fit into aligned connector slots of a pair of rails of adjacent panels of the form to properly position and firmly secure the lock to the form. The securing of the clamping members on the rails also holds adjacent panels of the form together. The rails are provided with tie notches which when panels are placed side by side and properly aligned the tie notches form tie slots through which a tie having loops at each end can be extended between panels of opposing sides or walls of the form structure. A tie opening is formed in the clamping lock through which the loop of a tie is adapted to extend. An anchor lock having a tapered arm is mounted on the clamping lock so that its arm can enter into a tie loop extending through the tie opening to secure the tie to the clamping lock and to tension the tie.

  • Patent number: 4153552
Abstract: Method and apparatus for regenerating a diatomaceous earth filter cake of a pressurized liquid filter system by liquidizing the diatomaceous earth filter cake formed on filter elements in the filter chamber of the system; by uniformly mixing with the liquidized diatomaceous earth the insoluble particles, or impurities, removed by the filter cake from liquid that has passed through the cake; and by reforming the fluid cake with the impurities uniformly distributed throughout the filter cake. The liquidizing of the filter cake and impurities and mixing of the diatomaceous earth and impurities result from oscillations induced in the liquid in the filter chamber by several cycles of rapid reversal of the flow of liquid through the filter chamber.

  • Patent number: 4153051
Abstract: A compound splint, primarily for use after nasal surgery, prevents edema fluid from splaying the bones apart so that they will grow back together and includes a base layer of adhesive tape applied directly to the nose, a secondary component of flexible material adhesively secured to the base layer and having a multiple loop formation on its outer face, and a primary restraining component. The latter includes a panel of malleable metal and a layer of fabric secured to one face of the panel, the fabric having a multiple hook formation. In use, the primary component is applied to the central portion of the secondary component, engaging some of the hooks and loops. The side portions are then pressed inwardly against the sides of the nose to the desired final shape, engaging the balance of the hooks and loops. Thus the primary component is securely anchored in place and prevents any change in size or shape of the traumatized nose during recovery.

  • Patent number: 4136452
Abstract: A kit is provided for the fabrication of a custom fit garment. The outline of the individual patterns for the pieces forming the garment are preprinted in spaced relation on one or more lengths of fabric. In turn the pieces form a finished garment when joined according to the instructions provided. The patterns are sized for nominal dimensions with alterations capable of being made in the length and width of the garment by adding or subtracting as much as two inches at each seam. The alterations are preplanned by comparing actual measurements of the wearer with the known finished dimensions of a nominal size garment and properly adjusting the dimensions accordingly. Surplus material provided allows repair of the finished garment or the addition of accessories. This custom fit alteration method can also be applied to the common paper pattern style of garment making.

  • Patent number: 4133106
Abstract: A folding knife has a blade and a pair of overlying scales all mounted on a pivot post. A lock pin and lock hole on the scales retain them in registry for blade use or storage. A stud on one scale engages a semi-circular slot in the blade and swings it to an extended position during a full turn of the scale around the pivot post, and a corresponding turn in the reverse direction retracts the blade. A blade guard between the scales serves as a stop or abutment for two different parts of the tange of the blade to limit extension and retraction. Spring means are built into the pivot post to yieldingly press the lock pin into the lock hole to prevent unintentional movement.
