Abstract: A mist elimination device in the form of a hood for the removal of moisture from a gas stream treated by a WESP includes a series of gutters on the outer surface of the hood to trap liquid droplets and direct the moisture to channels to drain to the lower region of a housing. Gutters are also provided on the interior surface of the hood to catch liquid droplets carried by the gas stream into the interior of the hood.
Abstract: An apparatus for determining the orientation of a borehole at a point along the borehole, includes a tiltmeter for measuring the inclination of the borehole relative to the vertical, a vector magnetic sensor for measuring the amplitude of the component of the Earth's magnetic field along the axis of the borehole, and means for computing the orientation of the tubular sonde from the measurements of inclination and amplitude of the component of the Earth's magnetic field aligned with axis of the sonde.
Abstract: The crystal structure of the Fab? fragment of Mab 2F5, a potent neutralizer of both laboratory strains and primary clinical isolates of most clades of HIV-1, both uncompleted and complexed with the largely conserved peptide sequence ELDKWAS of the viral envelope protein gp41, has been elucidated and the characteristics of peptide-protein interactions determined. Having regard to such determination, the peptide-mimetics are constrained in the three-dimensional structure to provide an increased immunogenicity to the epitope sequence.

Abstract: A method for prospecting for oil and gas deposits is provided, said method comprising: outlining of highly permeable collecting basins development zones, performing an aerospace survey of a landscape, determining a spectral reflectivity over the landscape, and incorporating the height profile, block fields, aerospace survey and spectral relativity in order to produce a predictiveis provided.
Abstract: Branched copolymers of polypropylene (PP) and polysilanes are prepared by procedures involving melt phase hydrosilylation. Such branched copolymers may be formed in situ during the melt phase hydrosilylation or may be prepared by subsequent processing. The branched copolymers exhibit superior properties.
Abstract: Multimeric hybrid genes encoding the corresponding chimeric protein comprise a gene sequence coding for an antigenic region of a protein from a first pathogen linked to a gene sequence coding for an antigenic region of a protein from a second pathogen. The pathogens particularly are parainfluenza virus (PIV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). A single recombinant immunogen is capable of protecting infants and similar susceptible individuals against diseases caused by both PIV and RSV.

Abstract: A chromatographic assay device for the analysis of an analyte in a liquid sample has a proximal sample application zone and a distal test zone. The test zone contains a first ligand capable of binding with the analyte to form an analyte-ligand complex. The device also includes a spatially distinct reservoir containing a labeled reagent capable of binding to the analyte-ligand complex; an absorbent sink which is positioned to be capable of drawing the contents of the spatially distinct reservoir through the test zone; and structures for contacting the spatially distinct reservoir with the chromatographic medium so that the labeled reagent migrates from the reservoir to the absorbent sink, and thereby through the test zone to determine the presence or absence of the analyte. The device is used in a method for detecting analyte.
Abstract: Nucleic acid, including DNA, immunization is used to generate a protective immune response in a host, including humans, to a serine-threonine kinase (STK) of a strain of Chlamydia. A non-replicating vector, including a plasmid vector, contains a nucleotide sequence encoding a STK or a fragment of the STK that generates antibodies that specifically react with STK and a promoter sequence operatively coupled to the first nucleotide sequence for expression of the STK in the host. The non-replicating vector may be formulated with a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier for in vivo administration to the host.
Abstract: Non-infectious, retrovirus-like particles contain mutations to reduce gag-dependent RNA-packaging of the gag gene product, eliminate reverse transcriptase activity of the pol gene product, eliminate integrase activity of the pol gene product and eliminate RNase H activity of the pol gene product through genetic manipulation of the gag and pol genes. The corresponding nucleic acid molecules are described. The non-infectious, retrovirus-like particles have utility in in vivo administration including to humans and in diagnosis.

Abstract: An immunogenic composition capable of producing a respiratory syncytial (RS) virus specific immune response in a host immunized therewith comprises purified, inactivated RS virus which is substantially free from cellular and serum components and which is non-infectious, non-immunopotentiating, immunogenic and protective. The virus is grown on a vaccine quality cell line and harvested virus is purified under non-denaturing conditions to be substantially free from cellular and serum components. The purified RS virus is inactivated using ?-propiolactone, a non-ionic detergent, particularly n-octyl-?-D-glucopyranoside and n-octyl-?-D-glucopyranoside, or ascorbic acid. The immunogenic composition may be formulated as a vaccine for in vivo administration to a human host. The immunogenic composition also may be used in diagnostic applications.

Abstract: Purified and isolated nucleic acid molecules are provided which encode a FlaC flagellin protein of a strain of Campylobacter, particularly C. jejuni, or a fragment or an analog of the FlaC flagellin protein. The nucleic acid molecules may be used to produce proteins free of contaminants derived from bacteria normally containing the FlaA or FlaB proteins for purposes of diagnostics and medical treatment. Furthermore, the nucleic acid molecules, proteins encoded thereby and antibodies raised against the proteins, may be used in the diagnosis of infection.
Abstract: Immunogenic compositions for administration to adults, particularly to the elderly, to protect them against disease caused by infection by respiratory syncytial virus and by influenza virus comprise an immunoeffective amount of a mixture of purified fusion (F) protein, attachment (G) protein and matrix (M) protein of RSV and an immunoeffective amount of a non-virulent influenza virus preparation. The components of the composition, when formulated as a vaccine for in vivo administration, do not impair the immunogenicity of each other. The immunogenic composition may also contain an adjuvant.

Abstract: Contaminant laden gas streams from wood product dryer operations, and other sources, are purified. The gas stream first is saturated with moisture by contacting the gas stream with fine liquid droplets which entrain particulates. The gas stream then is subjected to a plurality of separate particulate and liquid droplet removal steps before a droplet-free gas stream having substantially reduced particulate contaminant levels is passed to a burner for removal of volatile organic compounds from the gas stream.
