  • Patent number: 6711157
Abstract: A system and method of creating subscriber services in an Internet Protocol (IP)-based telecommunications network. A service creation architecture includes a Service Component Creator (SCC) that creates service proxy objects, and posts them on a Lookup Service (LUS). The LUS is accessible through the Internet by Enterprise Service Creators (ESCs). The ESCs download the posted service proxy objects from the LUS, and customize the downloaded objects to create customized services for enterprise users. The ESCs upload the customized service proxy objects to an Enterprise LUS, and the, Enterprise LUS downloads the customized service proxy objects to a Service Management Unit (SMU) serving the end user. A gatekeeper serving the end users utilizes the service proxy code downloaded to the SMU to determine the location of a Service Implementation Repository (SIR) that stores actual service code for implementing the customized service.

  • Patent number: 6707813
Abstract: A method of call control in a packet-switched radio telecommunication network that minimizes delays in launching a voice call from a first Internet Protocol (IP)-based mobile station (MS) to a second IP-based MS. The method includes the steps of preventing voice traffic from being routed to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), and setting up an optimized path for voice traffic from the first MS to the second MS. The optimized path may be set up by creating a shortest route tunnel between a first serving GPRS service node (SGSN1) serving the first MS and a second SGSN (SGSN2) serving the second MS. Alternatively, the tunnel may be established between the base station controllers (BSCs) of each MS's serving radio base station.

  • Patent number: 6687252
Abstract: In a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network, a system and method of dynamically allocating an Internet Protocol (IP) address to a mobile terminal (MT) operating in the network. A Gateway GPRS Service Node (GGSN) requests IP addresses over the Gi interface from a Radius server in an IP-based network. A Conditional PDP Address (CPA) parameter is stored in the MT's Home Location Register (HLR) as part of the user subscriber data, and is passed to the GGSN during the GPRS Attach procedure. The CPA parameter indicates whether the subscriber is entitled to a backup IP address in case of failure to obtain one over the Gi interface, and whether the MT is a user of a real-time application. A timer in the GGSN sets a maximum time period (Ti) that the GGSN will wait for a response from the server, and a counter (Ni) sets the maximum number of requests that are sent.

  • Patent number: 6687356
Abstract: A system and method of device-aware service provisioning in a hybrid/integrated telecommunications network having a packet-switched network portion (PSN) and heterogeneous circuit-switched network (CSN) portions. A user profile is provided which partitions a service in three dimensions: a user-specific service part, a device-specific service part, and a combination part which specifies service conditions when an end-user uses a particular device or terminal. A common IP telephony Value-Added Services infrastructure is included wherein device-aware service triggers are provided for triggering appropriate service partitions of the user profile. Upon encountering a device-aware service trigger in a call control process, a service switching node queries the user profile and determines the service conditions associated with the particular device-specific service part to be invoked.

  • Patent number: 6667968
Abstract: A system and method for providing multiple endpoints in a single proxy device disposed in a packet-switched network system comprising a gatekeeper. The proxy device is configured with an alias address and transport address. Each endpoint is provided with its own alias address also. When the proxy device is registered at the gatekeeper, a registry table therein is updated by creating an association between the proxy device's transport and alias addresses. For each endpoint that is powered up, a Registration Request message is sent from the proxy device to the gatekeeper. The Registration Request message includes the alias address of the endpoint. In response, the registry table in the gatekeeper is updated by creating an association between the transport address of the proxy device and the endpoint's alias address received, without replacing or deleting previous associations between the proxy device's transport address and other alias addresses.

  • Patent number: 6654606
Abstract: A Call State Control Function (CSCF) and method of processing a call to a called mobile station (MS). The method is performed in all of the CSCFs in a third generation Internet Protocol (3G.IP) network. When an incoming call setup message such as a Fast Setup or Location Request message is received in the CSCF, the CSCF first determines with a relationship function, whether the CSCF is the Home CSCF for the called MS. If so, a first set of call processing steps are performed. If the CSCF is not the Home CSCF, the CSCF determines if it is currently serving the called MS. If the CSCF is the Serving CSCF, a second set of call processing steps are performed. If the CSCF is neither the Home CSCF nor the Serving CSCF for the called MS, a third set of call processing steps are performed.

  • Patent number: 6615042
Abstract: A method in a Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN) of handling subscriber services when a serving Mobile Switching Center (MSC) does not support all WIN triggers. The WIN includes a Home Location Register (HLR) having a subscriber profile that indicates the WIN triggers required to support a particular subscriber's active services. When an invoke message is sent from the MSC to the HLR, a WIN Capabilities (WINCAP) parameter is included and indicates the WIN triggers supported by the MSC. The HLR identifies a Service Control Point (SCP) for each subscriber service that requires a WIN trigger and is not supported by the MSC. The HLR then queries each identified SCP for call-treatment instructions. If an SCP determines that its service is essential, a response is returned to the HLR with an instruction to deny service to the subscriber.

  • Patent number: 6604142
Abstract: A method and apparatus for filtering responses to a gatekeeper discovery request message that is multicast from a mobile terminal to a plurality of gatekeepers in a communications network so that an optimum gatekeeper can be selected. When using the H.323 protocol, an enhanced Gatekeeper Request (GRQ) message includes criteria for an optimum gatekeeper for the mobile terminal. Each gatekeeper, upon receiving the enhanced GRQ message, determines whether it meets the criteria in the request message. If so, a confirmation message is sent to the mobile terminal from each gatekeeper that meets the criteria. In an alternative embodiment, gatekeepers that receive the enhanced GRQ message send a response indicating their capabilities to meet each of the criteria. The mobile terminal then determines the optimum gatekeeper by comparing the reported gatekeeper capabilities to the optimum gatekeeper criteria.

  • Patent number: 6546247
Abstract: A Home Location Server (HLS) and method of processing an incoming real-time call to a Mobile Station (MS) in a hybrid radio telecommunications network having both second generation (2G) and third generation (3G) service nodes. When a request for location information for the called MS is received in the HLS from an interrogating switch where the incoming call originated, the HLS determines whether the called MS is located in a 2G Mobile Switching Center (MSC), or a 3G Call State Control Function (CSCF). If neither, the HLS concludes that the called MS is located in an Serving General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node (SGSN). A 3G flag, which is set in the subscriber profile when the MS registers with a 3G SGSN, is checked to determine whether the SGSN is a 2G SGSN or a 3G SGSN. If the SGSN is a 2G SGSN, the HLS informs the interrogating switch that the MS is not available for the real-time call.
