  • Patent number: 4181543
Abstract: A super conductor is made by first shaping a copper strip carrying a niobium layer into a corrugated tube; thereafter tin is deposited on the tube which is coiled, hung from a ceramic rod and placed into an annealing furnace being evacuated thereafter, the interior of the tube is sealed off from the interior of the furnace. After, e.g. two hours of heating for causing the tin to diffuse into the niobium, a sufficiently thick layer of Nb.sub.3 Sn has developed and a cold inert gas is flushed through the tube to rapidly cool the tube while retaining it in the evacuated but no longer heated furnace.

  • Patent number: 4179887
Abstract: Two hydraulic brakes or clutches being primary users, are alternately, delayedly, hydraulically energized from a constant volumetric flow rate pump feeding also a secondary user via a pressure controller with a differential piston operated by feedback ducts from the primary users via a throttle valve. The latter valve is bypassed through a check valve for undelayed de-energization. A selector valve is disposed between the branch point for the secondary user and upstream as to energizing fluid from the feedback connection to the primary user. The pressure controller is described further as to several structural details.

  • Patent number: 4180383
Abstract: An immobilized immunoadsorbent for use in immunoassay and radioimmunoassay procedures includes, in a preferred form, a mass of superficially porous refractory particles having a water insoluble polymer, such as dextran, bonded thereto. The polymer in turn has bonded to it, by covalent bonds, antibodies capable of binding a specific antigen thereto and stoichiometrically releasing the bound antigen by the use of a rinsing solution which does not adversely affect the binding of the antibody to the polymer. Preferably, each of the porous particles includes an impervious core which has joined thereto sufficient layers of microparticles to form an outer porous coating on the core. Methods of forming such an immunoadsorbent and for using the same and structure for supporting the same.

  • Patent number: 4178761
Abstract: A pumping system deriving power from a heat source and heat sink, for producing either a liquid or gaseous output, utilizes the available thermal potential energy for conversion to work. A liquid, such as a cryogenic liquid is pumped to a first pressure and at least a portion of the output is pumped to a second and higher pressure. The liquid at the higher pressure flows through a heat exchanger to vaporize the liquid to a gas which drives a turbine for generating power to power the pumps or an electrical generator or both. The exhaust output of the turbine flows into the output of the first pump or stage. A recondensing heat exchanger may be used to recondense the turbine exhaust. The system may produce a liquid output or a gas output.

  • Patent number: 4177661
Abstract: A process for bending large pipes comprises the steps of progressively and inductively heating the wall of a pipe within the region to be bent. The penetration depth of the heat energy is varied over the circumference of the pipe through shielding. The inner radius of the pipe to be heated may initially be heated before the entire wall is differentially heated. Apparatus for carrying out the process is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4176963
Abstract: Apparatus for determining the nitrogen oxide concentration in a gaseous mixture while minimizing measuring errors. The radiation from a hollow cathode lamp emitting the nitrogen oxide resonance radiation is modulated by a device for generating alternatively an unfiltered or test beam and a reference beam. The reference beam is filtered by a nitrogen oxide filled filter. An absorption cell is disposed in the path of the reference beam. Further, a monochromator or filter is provided and a detector for receiving the radiation from the monochromator filter. A signal processing unit is coupled to the detector for forming electric signals corresponding to the signal from the unfiltered and the reference beam and for forming the quotient thereof. A ray splitter is disposed in the path of the two beams to provide a different beam path and an additional radiation detector is disposed in the additional path.

  • Patent number: 4177045
Abstract: A self-acting device for filtering the smoke commonly associated with cigarettes and cigars includes an ashtray which supports a shroud for confining smoke. The shroud in turn supports a motorized fan which creates a flow of air to carry the smoke. In close proximity to the fan and also supported by the shroud is a detector which acts to sequentially sense the smoke and activate the fan motor. A portion of the detector also serves to separate a certain amount of the smoke from the air. Smoke which remains is further drawn upwards by the suction forces created by the fan through a filter before the filtered air is ultimately propelled into the immediately surrounding environment.

  • Patent number: 4175212
Abstract: An inner conductor for a gas filled high voltage cable is constructed from plural elements arranged on a carrier tube in one or several layers. The conductive elements are either stranded around the carrier while remaining spaced from each other so that they can deform azimuthally in a wave-like pattern whenever their temperature increases, or alternatively, the conductor elements remain unstranded and are already contoured in a wave-like pattern whose amplitude excursion increases with temperature. In either case, length extensions of the elements are taken up by the wave pattern and do not cause overall length extensions of the conductor assembly as a whole.

  • Patent number: 4173898
Abstract: The system includes a plurality of individually selectable transmitter and receiver channels, a common controller and a common acquisition unit constructed to operate on the basis of parameters which are furnished to the controller and the unit as input signals. Some of the parameters are held in a memory and are withdrawn on the basis of test identification numbers to set up the acquisition unit. The acquisition unit has a transit time counter and two parallel operating looking window generators and several comparator stages, operating under utilization of such parameters. The data as acquired by a test, are accumulated and processed to determine new parameters, if necessary, and feeding them to the memory. The controller conducts the tests on the basis of sequencing the system through a group of test identification numbers, and provides also launch delay and receiving delays on the basis of externally, updatable parameters.

  • Patent number: 4173897
Abstract: An ultrasonic test system for inspection of structural material includes a test electronics for controlling a plurality of ultrasonic transmitter and receiver channels. This test electronics is operated by sequencing the system through the several channels, but the evaluating circuit is common to the receive channels. The duration of the test, timing of launching, timing of beginning receiving response signals, time and duration of looking windows for identifying and timing particular responses, and comparison data, all are operating and acquisition parameters for operating the electronics. These parameters are furnished from external sources and are programmable and exchangeable, e.g., from test to test. At least some of these parameters are updated on the basis of data as acquired during the test.
