  • Patent number: 4100312
Abstract: An improvement is obtained in the bond strength between members of a laminate comprising a plastic substrate and a metal film through a process of first laminating to the plastic substrate a thin, sacrificial, anodized metal foil while providing at the interface prior to laminating of the foil to the plastic at least a mono molecular film of an organic silicon compound. After laminating the treated metal foil to the substrate under heat and pressure, the foil is chemically stripped from the substrate, leaving a surface of improved receptivity for conventional electroless plating and electroplating procedures, or other metallizing techniques. The final metal film when applied to the substrate exhibits consistently better adhesive strength than is obtained without the organic silicon treatment of the interface, especially in respect to adhesive strength at elevated temperature.

  • Patent number: 4099919
Abstract: A mixing head for a reaction injection molding machine, which incorporates several beneficial features, comprises a body having a bore, which defines a mixing chamber, and a plurality of nozzle orifices opening into the mixing chamber for conducting reactive polymeric components thereto. A plunger is mounted for reciprocal movement in the mixing chamber to control flow of the reactive components through the nozzle orifices to form a homogeneous polymer mix, e.g. a polyurethane or polyisocyanurate mix, in the chamber, and serves also to eject the resulting mix from the chamber. The plunger is controlled by an actuator piston and is linked thereto by a universal coupling that minimizes plunger binding in the mixing chamber due to misalignment between the plunger and actuator.

  • Patent number: 4096301
Abstract: Apparatus and a method are disclosed for replenishing an electroless plating bath with those of its components which are consumed during plating operation, in order that the concentration of components be maintained as nearly constant as possible in the working bath. The system involves withdrawing from the bath a small sample stream at fixed rate, and subjecting this automatically to a sequence of analyses. The system is particularly adapted to control of electroless copper solutions comprising copper ion, hydroxide and formaldehyde as the consumable components. Sequential analyses are made of the sample stream for these components using instrumentation to control actuators which introduce replenisher solutions into the plating tank in response to signals generated by the instruments whenever deviation occurs from a pre-set level. Standardized test solutions of known concentration and rate of feed are introduced into the test stream to optomize test conditions during the analyses.

  • Patent number: 4094119
Abstract: A method of making a product, which holds and dispenses a volatile substance, comprises the steps of advancing a backing material, a reservoir material and a third material, that is permeable to the volatile substance, from respective supplies into close proximity to each other with the reservoir material lying between the backing and permeable materials. The volatile substance is then supplied to the reservoir material to be absorbed thereby. The three materials are fused together in a pattern defining a closed loop periphery to seal the reservoir material between the backing and reservoir materials at the periphery and thereby form the product.

  • Patent number: 4092118
Abstract: A high pressure mixing head is disclosed for combining a plurality of reactive fluid polymeric components to form a mixture thereof for molding purposes. The mixing head incorporates an expulsion piston operating in a mixing chamber into which the several components are individually admitted through separate inlet openings which are covered and uncovered by reciprocation of the expulsion piston. This piston is actuated by connection to a power piston operating in a power cylinder, and means such as a limit switch assembly is mounted on the power cylinder to detect the position of the power piston and hence the expulsion piston in the mixing chamber. This switch is used to control the "shot time" of the mixing head cycle of operation; that is, the time during which the inlet ports to the mixing chamber remain uncovered by the expulsion plunger to allow the components to enter the mixing chamber through the respective inlet ports.

  • Patent number: 4090354
Abstract: A counting mechanism for a timepiece in which the drive means therefor oscillates a counting wheel, which in turn drives a co-axially mounted ratchet wheel in one direction. The counting wheel and ratchet wheel are interconnected so that during each oscillation of the counting wheel, both wheels first move in unison in one direction and then the counting wheel alone is driven in the other direction against a resilient coupling member while the ratchet wheel is held stationary by a pawl. The counting wheel is released between each cycle of oscillations, so that it can be returned by the resilient coupling member to its normal position with respect to the ratchet wheel.

  • Patent number: 4089919
Abstract: A method is disclosed of reshaping a sheet of resiliently deformable material impervious to fluid by conforming it to the cavity of a female mold and casting a flexible plastic foam into contact with said sheet material, whereby said material is integrated with the foam and forms a cover sheet therefor. A perforated elastic diaphragm is interposed, during the reshaping and foam casting process, between the cover sheet and surface of the mold cavity so that the cover sheet is in superimposed direct contact with the diaphragm throughout its area. The two are clamped to the periphery of the mold to form a seal thereat, and a differential pressure is applied across the cover sheet and diaphragm. The sheet is therefore deformed against the walls of the mold simultaneously with the diaphragm and is stretched evenly with the diaphragm in order to produce uniform thickness.

  • Patent number: 4087959
Abstract: A crown ring for a date indicator is moved once during each revolution of a continuously rotating plate or driving member, which plate has a cam-shaped member of magnetic material that rotates with it and cooperates with a magnet in order to substantially eliminate the variations in torque required to rotate the plate. To this end, the profile of the cam-shaped member is such that during the portion of each revolution of the plate when the crown is moved, the surface of the cam comes rapidly closer to the magnet increasing the pull of the magnet on it, and during the remainder of each revolution, it recedes. The magnet, therefore, helps to rotate the plate when the crown is being moved in order to offset the torque required to move the crown, while placing only a slight drag on the plate during the balance of each revolution of the plate.

  • Patent number: 4087501
Abstract: A method for the continuous production of completely or partly foamed thermosetting polymerizable plastic articles, such as pipe insulation shells or sleeves. One or more sets of justaposed mold-carrying endless conveyors are employed wherein one conveyor of each set supports a series of longitudinally contiguous mold halves complementary with a series of longitudinally contiguous mold halves supported by the other conveyor of the set. The conveyors are advanced simultaneously, and during the juxtaposed portion of travel define a laterally closed, longitudinally extended mold cavity which moves or advances. The cavity thus defined comprises a plurality of zones corresponding to tube segments extending longitudinally in side-by-side, substantially planar disposition, with thin hinge-forming channels interconnecting adjacent segment zones. A thermosetable foam-forming resin mix is distributed on to one of the complementary mold halves prior to closing of the mold cavity.

  • Patent number: 4078657
Abstract: A case is disclosed for storing and transporting a tape cassette having at least one tape reel that includes a clutch element registrable with a corresponding driving spindle of a reel drive mchanism so that the reel may be rotated. The case comprises a base formed to receive the cassette and a non-rotating latch pin registrable with the clutch element of the reel to prevent reel rotation and, hence, unwinding of stored tape. The latch pin is mounted with the base by a leaf spring assembly which permits the pin to retract to accommodate the cassette when not registered with the clutch element. However, the spring assembly urges the pin into reel-rotation preventing engagement with the element when the two are registered.

  • Patent number: 4073398
Abstract: A snap-lock device, for securing a dispensing mechanism to the mouth of a container which has an annular bead about the mouth periphery, comprises a bead embracing ring having an axially extending annular recess open at one end of its axial extent to receive the bead. An annular rib, formed with the ring adjacent the open margin of the recess, underlies at least a portion of the bead to prevent axial bead-ring disengagement. A retainer element, engageable on the ring when installed on the bead, exerts a radial force against the ring and holds the rib in underlying relation to the bead. The dispensing mechanism is mounted with one of the ring and element. A rabbeted interlocking arrangement between the ring and element prevents their relative disengagement so that the dispensing mechanism cannot be removed from the container. Therefore, the device can be used with pressurized barrier-type and aerosol containers.

  • Patent number: 4072147
Abstract: A radiation endoscope is described wherein a laser or other radiation source is employed for therapeutic purposes. Radiation energy may be accurately directed at a target in a body cavity with the use of a marking spot whose light energy is passed along an optical path in the sheath of the radiation endoscope to the cavity area on which the radiation beam is incident. Eye protection for an operator of the radiation endoscope is obtained with the use of a variable filter interposed in an image path and coupled to correspondingly reduce the beam radiation effective in the body cavity as the image path transmissivity is enhanced. In one embodiment, attenuation of beam radiation is obtained by using a variable density optical filter coupled to the filter operative in the image path. In another embodiment, radiation beam attenuation is achieved by deriving a radiation beam control signal from the filter operative in the image path.
