Abstract: An optical fiber splice is formed by means of a pair of watch jewels concentrically aligned within a cylindrical ferrule. The plastic is stripped back from a pair of fibers to expose their cores and each core is inserted into one of the jewels for precise alignment.

Abstract: A double heterostructure light emitting device has a graded index optical waveguide formed integrally therein. The integrally formed waveguide collects light from the heterojunction and directs the light in a distinct light pattern on one surface of the device. The rate of variation of the index gradient within the waveguide region determines the geometry of the light pattern. The light output pattern can be conveniently tailored to match the geometry of a wide variety of optical fiber dimensions.

Abstract: Suspensions of coal dust powder in fuel oil are stabilized against sedimentation by an additive that makes them viscous under conditions of low shear in order to keep the coal in suspension under static conditions while exhibiting relatively low viscosity under high shear conditions to facilitate pumping through long range pipelines by the combination of a suitable surfactant with a gelling grade clay suspending agent.

Abstract: An optical transducer is provided that has a flexible transducer member having a set of grooves in one of its major surfaces. Flexure of the transducer member produces a strain pattern that extends across an optical waveguide in the member. This strain pattern has a pitch that will diffract light of a suitable wavelength propagating in the optical waveguide.

Abstract: This relates to dual band waveguide radiating element for an antenna. A pair of adjacent rear wall excited waveguide elements have a slot in the common wall between them. This slot contains an excitation element so that the structure operates as a ridge waveguide. The rear wall excitation is at the higher of the two frequencies, e.g. S band, while the ridge waveguide operates at the lower frequency, e.g. L band.
